Dirty Dancing Patrick Swayze Dies at Age 57

Patrick Swayze, died at age 57 after a 20-month battle with pancreatic cancer. The actor was famed for his dancing skills in the movie “Dirty Dancing.” A three-time Golden Globe nominee, Swayze became a star with his performance as the misunderstood bad-boy Johnny Castle in that movie. In 1990, he also starred opposite Demi Moore in “Ghost.”

Fans of the actor were saddened to learn in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from a particularly deadly form of cancer.

“Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months,” said a statement released by his publicist, Annett Wolf.

Despite having a painful illness, Swayze veered off taking painkillers particularly because he had kept working despite the diagnosis and didn’t want the medication affect his acting. He also recognized the seriousness of the disease.

During an interview with Barbara Walters in early 2009, Swayze calculates that he has about 2 years to live.

Kanye West Upstages Taylor Swift at MTV’s Video Music Awards (VMA)

Taylor Swift, the cutest American country pop singer, won Best Female Video in MTV’s Video Music Awards and bested out Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Beyonce.

She took the stage to accept the award and deliver her thanks when Kanye West suddenly jumped on stage and grabbed her microphone to declare that Beyonce should have won because she had the best videos of all time.

The crowd booed the Kanye interruption and Kanye stormed off stage.  Swift was left on stage flabbergasted looking at the floor before she was ushered off stage.  Beyonce was as stunned as Taylor Swift.

**UPDATE**

Beyonce won Best Video of the Year, the biggest award of the VMA show, and generously shared the spotlight with Taylor Swift.  Beyonce danced her way to the stage, with the Single Ladies playing on the background.  “Wow, this is amazing.  I remember being 17 years old, up for my 1st MTV award with Destiny’s Child and it was one of the most exciting moments of my life. I’d like Taylor to come out and have her moment…”

She then calls Taylor to the stage, “where are you?”  The crowd cheered in uproar.  Taylor comes out in a red ensemble as well, different from her silver backless gown she wore earlier during her acceptance speech, approaches Beyonce and gives her a hug.

“Maybe we could do this again,” Swift opened her statement.  Like any grateful kid, she thanked the director of the video, including the fans who followed her on MySpace and Twitter and her brother’s high school for the video venue.

It’s a Match: Pacquiao – Hatton on May 3

The May 3 bout between Filipino boxing champ Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and British slugger Ricky Hatton is very much anticipated by many boxing fans.  According to the promoters, the seats are all sold out even if there are still 10 days left prior to the match.

This supposedly 2nd to the last fight of Pacman will be held at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.  Have you bought your tickets?  In Manila, you can still catch the action via closed-circuit viewing at various restaurants, sports bars, and hotel lounges.

Promotion of the Pacman –Hatton event is co-handled by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank.  Top Rank’s Bob Arum expects this fight to overshoot existing pay-per-view records.

“Given that the live gate for this event is sold out, coupled with the sellout of tonight’s San Francisco Giants baseball game where Manny is the guest of honor, indicates to me that ‘The Battle of East and West’ is on track to break all existing pay-per-view records,” Arum said in a statement.

This bout highlights two of the best pound for pound fighters in the world today in the form of Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton.  Floyd Mayweather Senior, currently Hatton’s trainer, claims that Hatton will undoubtedly knock Pacman out.  On the blue corner, Pacman’s long time trainer, Freddie Roach, said in an interview that he will bet his house (one of the many probably) that Pacman will knock Hatton’s lights out.

This is going to be a very exciting fight since both great fighters are at the prime of their career.  Pacman has yet to face someone who is also at the peak of his boxing strength and skills.  Hatton’s form is exactly Manny’s form when he was starting out… that brawl sense of style.  Defense is a little loose while the punches are straightforward and onrushing.  Mexican boxers, Barerra, Marquez and Morales have reached their winning climax when Pacquiao met them as a young fresh blood.
