Lola Maria’s at Legend of Villas

What was special about February 1?  Other than it was my birth date, Lola Maria Restaurant launched 8 celebrity dishes that changed the dining scene at Legend of Villas.

Amidst the urban landscape stands The Legend Villas, almost hidden behind high-rise corporate buildings in Pioneer Street.  Walk through the gates of Legend of Villas and get allured by an old world setting.  This elegant hotel with amenities and services that aligns with the modern times comes from Legend Hotels International Corporation who manages a chain of value-oriented hotels that provides accommodation to a wide range of clientele – company executives, families, OFW’s, balikbayans, provincial business travelers, local and foreign tourists.

One of the amenities in Legend of Villas is its in-house restaurant named Lola Maria’s.  The old world charm of the hotel extends to Lola Maria’s dining interiors with its Vigan-inspired design and wooden interiors.  Lola Maria successfully recreates an atmosphere of old Filipino family dining right at home with the congeniality and personal service of the wait staff.  Despite the luxurious feel of the place, it is a place where one can relax, unwind and enjoy comfortable dining at an affordable price.

Lola Maria’s biggest hits are their kare-kare, lechon kawali, beef steak and chicken gallantina.  The 80-seater restaurant offers a host of Filipino specialties, but is not without tasty international offerings like baked fish with garlic mayo, beef lasagna and salmon with pesto.

This 2011, Lola Maria Restaurant welcomes eight new delectable dishes created by Chef Michael Martinez in consultation with some celebrated personalities.

“What makes them special is that the recipes were shared to us by our celebrity friends.  These dishes are staples whenever they have gatherings with family and friends.  We just made sure we give each dish that distinct Lola Maria Restaurant twist,” shares Ginger Villavicencio, Chief Operating Officer of The Legend Villas.

Other than the ambience of home, Lola Maria’s also aims to provide scrumptious comfort dishes that evoke a memory of home gatherings and special moments with family and close friends.

On the Table:

1st – Vegetable Quiche

Baked tender pastry crust with fresh vegetables, topped with a dollop of sour cream.

Inspired by: Fashion Designer Randy Ortiz

Pastry crust was thin just the way I like it and not thick that it overshadows the filling inside.  The vegetable-egg custard inside was savory and the serving of sour cream on the side complements it.

2nd – Prawn Cakes

Oriental style minced shrimps coated with bread crumbs, served with hoisin sauce.

Inspired by: Show Car Maker Atoy Llave

3rd – Fish Pinipig

Cream dory fillet covered with crispy pinipig flakes, dipped in tartare sauce.

Inspired by: Actress/Host/Endorser Iza Calzado

It’s a different take on a “fish and chips” dish with the tender dory fillet encased in crispy pinipig flakes.  The dory tasted fresh but it can get drowned in the pinipig coating.

4th – Cocido

Beef ribs stewed in rich tomato sauce with chorizo and fresh vegetables.

Inspired by: Food Blogger Anton Diaz

Cocido is a hearty Spanish stew made up of meat, sausages, boiled carrots, potatoes and leafy greens.  Lola Maria’s cocido is an absolute must-try dish with beef ribs that can be tenderly forked and are soft to chew, climaxed by the delectable and tasty tomato broth that can make you finish heaps of white rice.

The Cocido sauce has the right balance of saltiness, tomato taste and meat flavor that is pleasantly enjoyable.  It was an ideal dish to gorge on during that drizzling evening as Lola Maria’s Cocido brought so much comfort.  The smoked eggplant dip it came with provides so much depth to the cocido.  I simply love it.

5th – Rosemary and Garlic Rib-eye

Best cut of beef seared and marinated with fresh garlic and rosemary.

Inspired by: Actress Ara Mina

Other than the Cocido, the Garlic and Rosemary Rib-eye is another favorite among the dishes we tried that evening.  It’s wonderful when the kitchen can get the right doneness I requested for.  I requested medium for my rib-eye and it was perfectly cooked in medium doneness.  It was served with mashed potato and seasoned carrot wedges.

The seared beef is a thin slice than what I would normally order but I like that the meat was so soft to the bite and delicate to chew.  I strongly suggest not to put any gravy on the rib-eye that they serve on the side.  The meat flavor is good as is.  It’s appealingly peppery with hints of rosemary and garlic.  I thoroughly wiped out my plate.

6th – Ube and Langka Panna Cotta

Light Italian dessert of fresh cream, flavored with vanilla.

Inspired by: Actress Sherilyn Reyes-Tan

Panna Cotta’s simplicity is one of the reasons why I like it as a dessert.  Lola Maria’s panna cotta was a good balance of light gelatinous cream with a touch of vanilla.  The ube mush on top with a strip of langka adds the taro flavor and Filipino twist to the Italian dessert.

7th – Ensaymada Pudding

Day-old ensaymada with custard; baked and topped with queso de bola.

Inspired by: Ford Supermodel Grand Winner Danica Magpantay

An original dish, Lola Maria’s Ensaymada Pudding has that Ensaymada pastry on top with a custard, yema-like bottom.  It was sprinkled with shavings of queso de bola to insert an appetizing sharp taste.

8th – Fried Suman at Tsokolate

Fried suman sa ibos dipped in creamy tsokolate.

Inspired by: Actress/Host/Model Wilma Doesnt

I’m not a big fan of suman and this was my least favorite among the desserts presented.

Feast on the fish pinipig, vegetable quiche, prawn cakes, cocido, rosemary and garlic rib-eye, ube and langka panna cotta, ensaymada pudding and fried suman at tsokolate, when you avail of the Food Tasting menu of Lola Maria’s.  If you want more of these specials in big-size servings, it can also be ordered separately.  Bring a Lola Maria specialty dish at any party and let it spark the table conversation.

Villavicencio shares, “Lola Maria Restaurant is the next best place for great home-style meals. We’re regularly introducing international cuisine to add variety to our menu, but most of our dishes are still Filipino.”

The Legend of Villas has long been a favorite for business meetings, seminars and conferences.  Lola Maria soon becomes a favorite for the same with the added convenience of Wi-Fi connectivity in the restaurant, coupled with a wide range of Filipino specialties and food-tasting specials.

Lola Maria Restaurant is now making its mark in the bustling metropolis as a destination for steaming flavorful dishes that bring memories of home to where you are.  It is definitely a memory of home-cooked comfort, gourmet taste, and elegant setting at Lola Maria’s.
