Mogu Mogu Drink

You know a drink that’s so addictive, you gotta say it twice? 🙂

My sister Joyce is presently captivated with this juice drink that’s originally from Bangkok, Thailand.  Mogu Mogu is a popular fruit juice drink with chewy, translucent and jelly-like Nata de Coco bits.  You know how Bubble Tea drinks, hailing from Taiwan, are becoming the newest food/drink fad this year, brushing the once-famous fro-yos (frozen yogurts) aside?

Bubble tea drink specialty shops and stalls are sprouting from left to right.  I think it’s the novelty of the tea plus tapioca that makes it such a hit.  There’s a healthier alternative to tapioca though and that’s nata de coco.  Nata de Coco has zero cholesterol and good fiber content!  That’s exactly what you can find inside the Mogu Mogu drink.

Mogu Mogu is a Japanese term, meaning ‘to chew’.  The drink is packed with delicious nata de coco bits which you can chew while quenching your thirst!  This sets it apart from the other bottled juice drinks available in the market.

Mogu Mogu drink comes in a variety of flavors: Lychee, Grape, Strawberry, Mango, Orange, and Pineapple.  Joyce likes the mango and pineapple flavors while I prefer their grape flavor.

Other than its recent launch in the Philippines, the Mogu Mogu drink is currently being distributed in Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Europe, Dubai, Japan and USA.

In Manila, Mogu Mogu drinks are available in all 7-Eleven and Mini Stop convenience stores including supermarkets of SM, Robinsons, and Shopwise.  It’s also being sold in Caltex convenience stores, various schools and gyms.

Grab a bottle and let me know what you think! 😉

Thai Dara

(How I wish Foodie Manila can always shoot for me so I’d always have outstanding photos.)

Right after the Glutamax event, Bubba, ZP (Carlos) and I dropped by a restaurant I’ve been meaning to try since last year.  It was my small celebration of the win spent together with my loving and supportive partner, Bubba, and Zippy, who, outside the online world, has become a really good friend of mine.  He holds the same fondness I have for “sole sistah” Madz.

Thai Dara has created a whole new meaning to serving Thai cuisine along Granada Street in Gilmore area.  The dining interior of Thai Dara is minimalist in white with visible elements of Thai design.  We walked inside the small restaurant, chose our table and not long after, 2 more tables get filled.

On the Table

Tom Yum Gai PHP 229

Famous Thai spicy soup with mushroom, lemongrass, galangga, and kaffir leaves

You have the option of chicken or seafood and I chose the latter.  Presentation was of note since the Thai soup dish was served the traditional way, in an aluminum container with the protruding funnel in the center.  Their Tom Yum Gai is a delicious combination of Thai spices and seafood broth with visibly sufficient amount of shrimps, fish, and mussels.

Your preference for the level of heat will be asked upon order.  Ours was mildly spiced –just enough chili flavor that entices another slurp.  I liked their Tom Yum Gai version a lot.  Maybe it would have been a bit better with a shade of sourness.

Thai BBQ Chicken PHP 229

Thai marinated chicken with sweet and sour sauce.  Served on sizzling plate, boneless chicken breast with noticeably BBQ-tasty chicken skin that didn’t need the orange sauce.  I was silently wishing that there’d be more of the flavorful charred skin.

Green Curry PHP 159

Homemade green curry paste with chicken, coconut milk, eggplant, and basil

I was only able to try this the following day when I packed it for lunch.  It was generally okay but made me look forward to trying their red curry next time instead.  It could use more curry flavor and smaller chunks of eggplant.

Yellow Curry Rice PHP 159

Stir fried curry rice with bits of pineapple, chicken, onions and peanuts

Plain Rice PHP 39

Milk Tea PHP 45

Mint Lemon Tea (2) PHP 45

Service was friendly and adequate.  The wait staff informed us that they have a second floor to accommodate more guests but seating style is on the floor in the upper dining area.

Thai Dara offers clean in taste and straightforward Thai dishes.  It’s good to know that a Thai restaurant is within the neighborhood to satiate my craving for affordable, reliable and authentic Thai cuisine.

Chiva Som “Haven of Life”

Chiva Som is a detox and therapeutic massage center that Bubba and I frequent.

We used to go once a month or once in two months or every time we need to alleviate stress.  However, Bubba yearns for massage day after day and my poor elbows aren’t willed enough.  That’s literally day after day.  I thought twice a month massage was already a generous proposition to him but my scoliosis worsens as he continues to request for more each week.

Chiva Som relieves me of my muscle aches AND my massage commitments.  I first tried Chiva Som early 2008 and I usually visit once a month or every 6 weeks unless I need an immediate relief.  Bubba and I were constant in Neo Spa Fort then, our favorite massage place.  Since our offices aren’t in Makati anymore, it’s an effort to go all the way to the Fort.  I’ve been to Neo Spa’s Greenhills branch a few times and service is not up to par to their Fort branch.  Chiva Som and Clark Hatch were our alternative.  Since my dad bought a book of massage certificates from Clark Hatch, we frequented that at that time.  Chiva Som overall service (including massage) got better.  Soon we notice that we keep coming back.  Since the start of 2009, we’ve only visited one massage place –Chiva Som.  Price during peak hours (after 5pm) is PHP350, which I find fairly priced if not low-priced.  Price off peak is PHP 300 per hour even during holidays.

They also offer a low Detox package rate that includes a 1-hour massage. The Detox involves an e-plus Ion Cleansing machine that detoxifies and helps one avoid dreadful diseases.  They are open from 12 noon to 12 midnight, Monday through Sunday.

There are no service cups of tea or shower rooms, but it’s a no frill place if you want very good quality massage.  Compared to bigger massage centers, they do not have “couple” rooms or private rooms.  There are only two common rooms but it’s clean and pretty decent.  The common rooms have movable dividers for additional privacy.

Avail of their therapeutic massages ranging from Thai, Swedish, foot reflexology, scalp massage, aromatherapy, stress reliever, hot stone massage and Sombra pain relieving massage.

I used to go for Swedish massage but Chiva Som specializes in Thai and they are indeed the experts on the field.  Bubba and I usually get the Thai massage from our favorite masseuses (email me for their names).  When they are occupied, we have to settle for the others but they are quite as good with some misses. Of our dozens of visits (I wonder if it’s been a hundred), we were 95% satisfied with the massage.  The consistency is really notable.  I’ve recommended it to a couple of friends and they were also extremely satisfied.

The Thai massage is a series of point pressure and stretches that work releasing tension and knots that have formed over time.  With the release that follows, the body becomes more flexible and able to move freely.  Massage is also good for your blood circulation, other than it relaxes your mind.

Bubba splurges on his visits, making it as frequent as twice a week or every week.  Sometimes only two days after, we go back for another go.  Bubba is clearly addicted to Chiva Som.  Just this week, we were there last Friday, and he went back with his dad and sister last Sunday.

Every visit to Chiva Som alleviates muscle tension and stimulates circulation, balancing my entire body.  It also aids my mind to relax after a long day at work.  It is an experience that uplifts mind and body to a tranquil level breathing in you renewed energy.

Moving to Angkor Thom Aboard Big Feet

15 minutes later, the rain has passed.

Departing the ancient city of Angkor, we see some Japanese friends who were at the same bus ride to Cambodia from Vietnam.  They greet us with a warm hello and ask to have our photos taken with them.

Going past the carved stone lion that stands guard near the causeway, we find our way back to where this journey started.  Before reaching the entry point again, I clutch the sight of the huge water reservoir and moat surrounding the temple of Angkor Wat.

The Khmer cosmology centers on Water, with its life-giving and purifying qualities, as the basic core of wealth.  It is also very important in Hindu religion.  The moats surrounding the temples of the ancient city epitomize a fairly convincing imitation to the big oceans that encases the earthly world.  The presence of the water reservoir represents Angkor’s enduring prosperity during its time.

I still feel the remnants of rain in the air but interestingly the ground was dry again.

We are aboard Rattana’s Tuk Tuk again setting out for the next stop.

Angkor Thom

At 9 square kilometers in area, Angkor Thom was one of the largest Khmer cities ever built.  The 5th gate, known as the Victory gate, leads directly to the Royal Palace.  The Victory gate was built during the reign of Jayavarman VII.  We cross the threshold of Angkor Thom via its eastern approach where an avenue of statues is lined.  The two rows of figures seem to each carry the body of a giant serpent –or a seven-headed naga –almost depicting a tug-of-war.

Jayavarman VII founded Angkor Thom that remained a capital until the 17th centuries.  During his empire, this was the center of his massive building program.  One inscription found within the last enduring city refers to Jayavarman as the groom and the city as his lovely bride.  The first site of this monumental structure is called the S Gate, with four faced towers pointing in each of the cardinal directions.

Much to my delight, we penetrate the city walls through an elephant ride (USD 15 per person).  The elephant ride was in our agenda during our trip to Thailand in February but it remained unchecked until the Cambodia trip.  Riding the gentle giant alongside Bubba is a pleasant experience.  The elephant takes the road first then gradually shifts to the lane of elephant tracks amid the stretched line of trees.  The elephant ride takes 15 minutes of leisure occasion giving an elevated perspective of the road going to Angkor Thom.

Most of the constructions inside have a triple tower carved with four faces that apparently closely resembles the statues of Jayavarman VII.  Pretty much like how our city officials decorate their governed district with their faces plastered on tarpaulins screaming “A Project of…”

With Bayon at its center, Angkor Thom serves as good appetizer for the next destination.

Fruit Puff

Many thanks to Brad Geiser for this fruit puff from Thailand.  My sister kept referring to it as ice cream cones because of the way the pastry was folded.  It was so fragrant that my sister said my breath smelled like fresh flowers.
