Bella Cupcakes Manila

There were three variants on the box including a Red Velvet cupcake and Salted Caramel but I zeroed in on the Bleu! I’m a bleu lover. It’s been a week or two without sweets or pastries and I could easily ignore it, but I couldn’t help not grab the Bleu Cheese and Honey Cupcake.

Bella’s Bleu Cheese cupcake had a thick cream cheese frost icing the top layer and then chunks of bleu cheese on top. The bleu cheese had a strong intense flavor, very sharp that’s doing a foxtrot with the creamy sweetness of the frost. It’s a yin and yang in a forkful bite of cupcake.

Dragonfly Desserts: Christmas 2010 Giveaway Idea #2

Fran handed the Club boxes of Dragonfly Desserts last Friday.  What wonderful timing since I’ve been looking for ideas for Christmas giveaways to feature on the site.

Three’s a Charm 😉

The Dragonfly Desserts boxes are quite spiffy with their lovely logo in front and minimal classy lines of yellow and edged out in brown-colored sides.  It’s also secured in place with a gold band on parallel corners.  Inside are neatly packed dessert goodies.

Wicked Bites PHP 265 (Box of 18)

Wicked bites are essentially chocolate chili bites.  Almost melting chocolate that has a nice surprise of spiciness or kick on your tongue, nothing to be alarmed, heat level is quite tolerable even for non-spicy lovers.  The chocolate cups are like fudge mixtures with only a bit of crumbly texture.  I love how it quickly softens in your tongue and your mouth soaks up all the rich chocolate goodness.

This is my favorite with its deep chocolate flavor and spicy kick from the chili.

The Almond Cappuccino Bars PHP 195 (Per Half Box, approx. 10 pieces)

These coffee-flavored square bars have a top layer liberally covered with chocolate chips and almond flakes.   It has a good crunch on the outer layer but deliciously chewy inside with clear hint of cappuccino taste.

My mom absolutely fell in love with these almond cappuccino bars.  She’s been eating it for days, before or after meals.  It agreed with her discriminating taste buds since she didn’t find it overly sweet but with just enough sweet tune peppered with coffee essence that appealed to her.

Carrot Cake (Price to follow)

Highly flavored with sweet carrots, the cake is light, moist and the perfect sweetness.

I will feature more Christmas giveaway ideas in the coming weeks.  Stay tuned.  For the meantime, why not call Dragonfly Desserts for a taste of their dessert offerings –If I were you, I’d surely get the wicked bites in my order list.

If you like the Dragonfly Desserts products, your friends/families/family friends might like it too and that means, Christmas Giveaway Idea #2 is checked.

10. King One’s Shabu Shabu

That Sunday lunch at King One’s Shabu Shabu (PHP 529 per head) was a wonderful lunch where the food were abound and of good quality –prepared well I should say.  I get turned off with restaurants that offer buffet sometimes because of the way the food is prepared… but in this case, King One’s staff handles the food properly.  Service was friendly, prompt and inclined –more reason to enjoy your King One feast.  Don’t forget to order fresh prawns, mozzarella balls, tao pao and lambOh lamb!

9. Sweet Revenge of Maitre Chocolatier

Sweet Revenge is Maitre Chocolatier’s Lindt Molten Lava Cake -dark chocolate molten lava cake made from Europe’s finest Lindt Excellence Dark 70%, filled with oozing sweet and vengefully spicy chocolate served with vanilla ice cream

Sweet Revenge was the unanimously favorite on the table with its gooey warm chocolate that ruptures from the moist cake that’s bittersweet dark and spiced with chili.  Midway when the chocolate flavor sinks in, the chili essence abruptly creeps in creating a sweet heat inside your mouth.  Cool off with the vanilla ice cream that soothes your taste buds to a calm reverie.  Bubba, Zipster and I loved the yin yang taste of darkness and sweetness, as well as the heat and arctic feel.

The spunk of the chili in the luscious chocolate liquid inside and the vanilla ice cream bring it all together in sweet harmony.

8. Minato’s Great Korean Barbecue

Other than the smorgasbord of side dishes that includes Kimchi, spiced green vegetables, peanuts, bean sprouts, marbled potatoes among a variety of other side accompaniments, it is really the barbecue that’s quite good at Minato.  It has to be one of the best in town.

Kimchi Pancake

The Kimchi Pancake is oil-fried pancake with bits of beansprouts and cabbage flavored Kimchi-style.  And I think it’s free.

So Kal Bi PHP 350

Marinated beef short ribs –has a shadow of sweetness, garlic and soy.  It’s hard to restrain oneself from gnawing the large bones with charred meat.

Sam Gyeop Sal PHP 240

The plate had thick, fatty slices of pork belly (almost looks like uncured bacon) alternating meat and fat and then skin.  Meat is left unseasoned and usually cooked on a grill at the diner’s table.  In this case, the wait staff helped in cooking the pork belly slices.  On the side, green onion leeks and lettuce are served in case you prefer to wrap your meat inside.  Customize it and add different side dishes or Kimchi and dip in sesame oil with fine black pepper and salt for a perfect finish.

8. Tasty Lechon Liempo at Chic Boy

Great food doesn’t necessarily have to come at a price.  There’s a new affordable (almost dare to say cheap) food discovery along Jupiter Street in Makati.  Call on the Chic Boy.  Chic-Boy is actually a play on the words Chicken and Baboy (pork) –the meats that are quite popular in the Filipino community particularly when it’s grilled.

Chic Boy is putting a whole new turn on chicken inasal, lechon manok and lechon liempo like you’ve never tasted before.  They’ve taken a special secret recipe of tasty lechon manok and lechon liempo in Cebu and chicken inasal of Bacolod and put it all in one easy-breezy and affordable restaurant here in Manila.

Must-orders include their Cebu Lechon Liempo and Salmon Sinigang (PHP 45).  With those affordable prices and flavorsome and satisfying meals, how can anyone go wrong? 😀

7. 22 Prime’s Tomahawk Chop

Quick-fire thoughts:

I love the ample size of fat that adds a buttery texture

and heightens flavor of the meat

Peppercorn sauce bursts a bouncy flavor that goes perfectly with the chop

The salad is a good pause in between bites of meat as a cleanser to the palate

Side of baby vegetables had the right crisp and seasoning

–the lone brussel sprout was my favorite!  Quite tasty!!!

Don’t miss out on ordering my FAVORITE Chef Rick’s Cheese Bread!

Chef Rick’s Cheese Bread PHP 140

Gooey warm cheese topped on three breads, soft and bursting with tantalizing flavors.  Served with baby greens in a mild citrus dressing sparkled with pink peppercorn.  Sun dried tomato and broiled four cheese together?  It’s an exercise in indulgence.

6. Ya Kun Kaya Toast –Ortigas

Want a great breakfast that lifts you up at any time of the day?  Head over at Ya Kun Kaya! 🙂

Kaya Toast (Half PHP 115, Set Menu PHP 140)

2 slices of delicious Kaya toast with butter –has the right lightly toasted crunch of the bread, slathered with butter and just enough green sweet coconut spread.  Satisfies when washed down with Ya Kun’s famous coffee tarik or the traditionally pulled coffee.  It’s not on their menu, but you can change your coffee to Yin Yang, which is this delicious half-coffee and half-tea drink.

Noticeably, the Ya Kun eggs were cooked perfectly, which other Kaya stores can’t quite get, where the eggs usually come out with still some raw uncooked parts.  My little spoon broke into that fountain of yolk and I was soaked in sunshine delight.  There’s no brighter day than eating wet and perfectly prepared eggs with the crunch of your toast.

5. Stevie’s Hainanese Chicken Rice

Suffused in its natural chicken juice/broth, the chicken meat was very tender and delectable –quite tasty for what can be considered a “healthy food.”  The exquisite and juicy flesh of the steamed chicken is finely balanced with the fragrant rice sprinkled with green onions.  Add a splotch of color and taste by blending in the ginger in sesame oil, chili and sweetened soy sauce.

Ooh, the appetizing smell and pleasant gingerly-sesame light taste mixed with a touch of soy and red spice… makes you definitely bite off more than you can chew.

4. Legend of India

Next to my favorite cuisine, I think Indian cuisine is one of the most interesting and flavorful fares in the world.  Indian cuisine uses various spices, herbs, and vegetables and fruits sometimes grown only in India.  It also has a wide assortment of cooking techniques.

Kadai Paneer PHP 260

Cottage cheese cooked in a traditional kadai masala paste

Rogan Josh PHP 450

Rogan Josh is an aromatic curry meat dish cooked with a mixture of strong Indian spices where the fat of the meat is usually roasted first in yogurt marinade.  Legend of India tamed their version for our group, which mean it wasn’t intensely hot, but it was still intensely enjoyable paired with the vegetable biryani or the naan.

Sweet Lassi PHP 110

It was my first time to actually drink a whole glass of sweet Lassi.  I’ve tried it before in other Indian restaurants but found the others’ version too sour for my taste.  Lassi is a popular and traditional Indian yogurt-based drink.  I tremendously enjoyed Legend of India’s sweet lassi since it has a perfect blend of yogurt, milk and sweetener.  There’s a bit of tangy taste to it but it mellows down with a frothy sweet milky flavor.  It fully relaxes your taste buds from the spices.

3. Tsumura’s Wagyu Beef Usuyaki

Other than the sushi and sashimi…

It’s the Wagyu Beef Usuyaki that’s memorable at Tsumura! 🙂

Wagyu Beef Usuyaki PHP 600

Supple mushrooms wrapped in thinly sliced Wagyu beef –very tender, flavorful that it’s mighty impressive.  The mushrooms were very light, in mellow contrast of the excellent beef.  It is simply an indulgence in fine food.  The taste is divine.

#3 is actually a toss-up between Tsumura and Serenitea

tied at the same number.

3. Serenitea’s Okkinawa or Hokkaido Milk Tea

Serenitea is your one-stop shop for all things serene about tea.  They have different variants of tea that will help boost a definite change of drinking lifestyle.  It is the healthy alternative to colas, coffee and sugar-loaded smoothies.  We visit 3 to 4 times a week to get our “Serenitea fix,” which is usually their Okkinawa milk tea drink with nata or pearls (depending on what topping you want) or Hokkaido with pearls.

2. Frazzled Cook’s Paella

In terms of taste and price, I consider Frazzled Cook’s Seafood Paella as the best in my book so far.

Seafood Paella PHP 550

For those diners who love their seafood paella with the full generous portions of mussels, squid rings, shrimps, chorizo and egg, this is their best bet for paella and huge value for money.  I love the fact that they serve it on the paellera since I enjoy most my paella with the burnt crispy part at the bottom.

For other recommended orders, below are some dishes worthwhile to try:

Wagyu Salpicao PHP 550

When the serving arrives on your table, initial thought would be, “this dish is pricey.”  If you’re being served with quality Wagyu that certainly softens in your mouth in a buttery texture without any effort, then your money is good.  Have no qualms being served only a few flavorful cubes of beef drenched in its sautéed oil with lightly fried chips of garlic and slices of button mushrooms.  Superb.

Peruvian Hot Pot PHP 400

The Peruvian Hot Pot is their version of spicy lamb stew.  This was Bubba’s favorite as the spicy invigorating flavors all come together from the lamb, olives, bell peppers and wine –great flavor and unbelievable rich sauce.  The lamb meat had no gamey aftertaste that will surely convert those non-lamb eaters.

1. La Tienda Steak

Chuleton PHP 2,150 (PHP 425/100 grams)

It was the steak that was the highlight of this dinner date for me (okay, plus Bubba’s adoring chinky eyes).  One of the best steaks I’ve tasted in Manila is not found on a focused steakhouse.  It’s at a Spanish restaurant called La Tienda.  I was pleasantly surprised how the steak gratified my meaty cravings.  I think we had it cooked in medium doneness.  The delicious steak was quite tender –glistening with appropriate grease and seemingly lightly salted while being cooked.

Exquisitely Choco-Loco at Maitre Chocolatier Boutique Café

Tuesday night, after I attended Al Gore conference and Bubba bought his new North Face bag (finally, congrats!) at Rox at the Fort, Bubba, Zips and I trudged to Jupiter Street to meet Eva Wong, the wits behind creative chocolate at the fabulously posh Maitre Chocolatier Boutique Café.

Situated along Jupiter Street, this chocolate café’s intimate and romantic dining room is smartly decorated with a bar that looks like a chocolate bar, graceful mirrors and lighted wall details that look like hot chocolate cups, handsome black and brown mix and match of round and square café tables and chairs in subdued lighting.

A white Maitre Chocolatier wall with the brand name stamps and plush candy corner are the predominant features of this clean-cut contemporary café.  The impressive classy décor is enhanced by the cuisine, which is chocolate eclectic.

On the Table

Antipasti

Fried Eggplant with Chocolate Sauce PHP 160

Experience the adventurous blend of sweet and salty slices of crispy eggplant dipped in dark chocolate sauce.

Interesting appetizer of very thin eggplant chips that are lightly salted, ready to be dunked in dark chocolate.  Since the eggplant slices are lightly battered before deep-fried, it doesn’t swiftly absorb the chocolate sauce but one can taste the rich chocolate unmarred and with a bite.

Maitre Chocolatier Garden Fresh Salad PHP 210

A colorful mix of lettuce, tomatoes, crispy Parmesan-crusted chicken tossed with a tangy White Chocolate Orange Vinaigrette creating a perfect healthy salad.

Start with a healthy and much lighter fare with the garden fresh salad served with pieces of crusty chicken dressed delicately with subtle white chocolate vinaigrette with tips of orange taste.

Entrées

Grilled Chicken in Pomegranate Sauce PHP 295

Evenly grilled chicken with the slightest hint of chocolate-charred flavor with supple vegetables on the side served with pomegranate sauce that adds a sweet tarty pop that lifts the dish

Linguini in Pesto Sauce with Parmesan Crusted Chicken PHP 255

Al dente pasta linguini with fresh herbs and spices with crisp and tender Parmesan-crusted chicken strips

Zipster is not a fan of Pesto but this dish surely converted him to the other side.  Pesto pasta was firm but soft to the bite with a fair amount of partly minty pesto sauce.

Roast Beef Panini PHP 225

The roast beef panini clearly won my attention among the savory dishes on the table.  I believe chocolate really goes well with beef and this is a prime example of it.  Bite the crunchy Italian herbed bread and sink your teeth into the tender strips of chocolate-coated beef, fresh carrots and zucchinis made more exceptional with the Mozzarella cheese and white chocolate dressing.

Heavenly Chocolate Desserts

My attention consequently shifted to what Maitre Chocolatier Boutique Café is all about –it is what droves of people come here for… late night, mid-day or at any given chocolate craving moment.  The highlights are the absolute chocolate pleasures that are more delectable than the savory dishes.

Golden Euphoria PHP 250

Ferrero Hazelnut Crunch Cake

This is supposedly Maitre Chocolatier’s bestseller where a tempting creamy Chocolate Hazelnut Mousse meets a velvety Chocolate Sponge Cake and then beautifully decorated with the enchanting Ferrero Hazelnut.

Sweet Revenge PHP 250

Lindt Molten Lava Cake

Dark chocolate molten lava cake made from Europe’s finest Lindt Excellence Dark 70%, filled with oozing sweet and vengefully spicy chocolate served with vanilla ice cream

Virtuous Temptation PHP 237

Lindt White Strawberry Mousse Cake

Heavenly White Chocolate Mousse Cake topped with slices of fresh strawberries and Lindt’s classic white chocolate

All the chocolate desserts laid on the table are visually striking.  Except that what gets me entranced is the well-designed chocolate taste that’s significantly distinctive from one dessert to the other.

Maitre Chocolatier Boutique Café combines the elegance of premium chocolates with modern day cuisine, on top of excellent chocolate-ridden desserts and the results are sublime.

Philippines 2010 Elections: Krispy Kreme Wants You to DOugh YOUR PART

There’s always politicking in the Philippines whether it’s election period or not.  Campaigning went to full gear around 3rd quarter of last year.  When the campaign period officially started, streets became filled with campaign posters and TV programs have been loaded with political advertisements.

It’s national elections and debates both on TV and in casual environments have skyrocketed on who to vote for, quite particularly in the seat of the next President.

I think there are also other important things to consider this coming election.  For instance, it will be a first in the country for registered voters to use an automated voting system.

A mock election conducted by COMELEC showed that some voters did not know where and how to cast their ballots.  Efforts from various sectors like on-air commercials are being made to be able to educate the voters.  Krispy Kreme is doing its part to contribute as well.

The well-loved family brand is out to their own campaign called “Vote 2010: Dough Your Part” and in doing so have devised their own way to help spread awareness.  They have created a mock ballot wherein voters will choose their winning doughnut and coffee.  “We wanted to make it a fun learning experience for the voters”, Mark Gamboa, Marketing Manager of Krispy Kreme said.  “This will help them prepare for the real, automated voting system.” He adds.

Given the insufficient knowledge of the voters regarding the new voting system, Krispy Kreme will give voters a chance to learn more about it. “So when the elections come, they wouldn’t be confused” Gamboa said. This awareness then leads to an organized and peaceful election.

Other than sharing the knowledge, the mock ballot Krispy Kreme has created will also encourage them to actually exercise their right to vote.  “Once they try the mock ballot, it will urge them to go out and vote.” Gamboa said. Since it is a new system and others may think it will be problematic, the Krispy Kreme campaign may help them think otherwise. For everyone to further maximize this advocacy, limited edition Krispy Kreme Vote 2010 doughnuts will be available on the said event and from May 8 to 10.

“With this, the spirit of this campaign can be made more visible.” he said. With this campaign, Krispy Kreme proves itself as more than a doughnut brand. They are also advocates of responsible citizenship. They have shown how doughnuts and coffee became a viable tool to educate Filipinos about the latest voting system.

Maitre Chocolatier Boutique Café

Right after a fresh and hearty dinner at Tsumura, Bubba drove me to Jupiter Street in Makati, where he claims to have found the “chocolate martini” I’ve been looking for.

From the same Philippine distributors of the famous chocolate brands, Maitre Chocolatier provides another venue for chocolate lovers to get their hands on a great selection of chocolate bars, candies, and other assortments.

The chocolate brands they exclusively distribute include Ferrero, Toblerone, Lindt, Stork, Rittersport and Frey.

Bailey’s Chocolate Vodka Martini PHP 130

I wasn’t really too thrilled with the Bailey’s Chocolate Vodka Martini.  I wasn’t even served a dessert spoon to help me scoop the chocolate mush at the bottom, unless it comes with a stick of chocolate I can comfortably stir it with.

The ice cream scoops were creamy and delish, makes me think that this is a perfect ice cream dessert place after a wonderful dinner some place else.  The different scoops brought out the distinct chocolate flavors of each brand.

He’s the “sweetness” in My Deep Dark Chocolate heart 😀

Service was so-so and without much enthusiasm.  The interiors with plush furniture are foxy, modern and posh –and all the sweets around create a romantic vibe perfect mood setting for a date.  I only wish that service could be more inclined.  I will probably go back with Bubba to try the other chocolate concoctions.  Eye-loving the chocolate sampler with churros and will try it the next time.

There are so many other desserts to try: White Chocolate Strawberry Mousse, Toblerone Marbled Crepe, Ferrero Hazelnut Crunch, Chocolate Fondue… I want the classic hot chocolate paired with the chocolate sampler! Mm-mm!  I got my name written all over it! 😉
