Wine Bar 1771, Where Good Food and Good Friends Meet

Last March 13th, my friends from my Poi group and I trooped to WineBar 1771 for dinner.  We always see each other on Sundays during fire dance class at Valle Verde and it’s also a group who loves and appreciates good food every after each class scouring restaurants within the area.  I’ve eaten at Café 1771 numerous times and enjoyed its quirky whimsy eclectic ambience perfect for Sunday brunches and days where you want the feel and calmness of a Sunday brunch.

Café 1771, Just Too Many Repeats

Invigorating Flavors and Interiors at Café 1771

Wine Bar 1771 has always been on my restaurant radar since it’s also part of the Chateau 1771 Group of Restaurants and it’s apparent in its top notch service and menu offerings.  It’s my first time at Wine Bar 1771 that evening, I can’t count how many lunch and dinner meetings I’ve had in Café 1771 but WineBar 1771 looks like a good alternative too.

The bar-restaurant interiors are inspired by upscale bars in the SoHo area of NYC.  It has that classy rich dark wood tones yet roughened up with faded brick walls for a rustic counterpart.  Walls are embellished with Provencal paintings of Phyllis Zaballero while crystal chandeliers hang lavishly from the ceiling.  They have function rooms on the sides of the big dining room for private functions or to hold intimate meetings with executives or gatherings.

Our group nestled cozily in the chairs while waiting for the appetizers to arrive.  The chit chats started and soon stories are spitting out from our long table –which soon became buzzed with excited energy coming from tasting the initial dishes.

On the Table

Oyster Rockefeller PHP 550

8 Baked Aklan oysters topped with creamy spinach, bacon and cheese

Tagged as an aphrodisiac, there’s just something sexy about oysters.  It’s smooth texture sliding down without much resistance.  Whether served fresh with lemon on the side or as we had it that evening, baked Rockefeller style, oysters are great in starting the mood right.

The Steaks at Texas Roadhouse

I cannot count how many times I’ve been to Texas Roadhouse, whether in the El Pueblo or Bonifacio High Street branch.  When I want no-brainer good food, it is definitely in my shortlist of go to restaurants.

Since this is a “Texas” themed restaurant, its main thrust is in its steaks –the all time favorite American grilled food.  The hand fits the glove as the restaurant is equipped with a long bar for some heavy cowboy drinking, swinging saloon doors and the wait staff in cowboy attire.

On the Table

Santa Fe Nachos PHP 275

For starters, we never fail to order the Santa Fe Nachos.  It is that bright cheesy triangle nacho dotted with a jalapeno slice in the center.  It’s in the first bite that holds the surprise because underneath the solid layer of cheese is yummy tomato basted ground beef.  Served with marinara and sour cream on the side.

Parmesan Crusted Fish Fillet PHP 350

It’s also a staple order in our table.  More from the previous post

Boneless Barbeque Chicken PHP 275

My sister Joyce loves anything Barbeque-d and chicken.  The dish she kept mostly for herself.

Herbed Trailboss Steak PHP 495

Add sautéed mushrooms PHP 90.  My mom opted to add the sautéed mushrooms for an additional charge and she was happy with her steak.  She loves her meat well done because reddish meat makes her feel repulsive.  She really enjoyed her order and couldn’t be any happier.  At any rate, her steak for me was okay but the flat iron steak was that evening’s table champ.

Flat Iron Steak PHP 475

It was very flavorful with enough juices in it to keep the meat moist and tender.  There is little needed to boost flavor since the meat is wonderful on its own tender meaty glory.  The meat wasn’t grainy or stringy.  It was so tender that it delicately softens in your mouth .  It is definitely a steak that “meats” your taste buds.

And as usual, the service crew is a great staff delivering genuine hospitality.

08.08.08 @ Myron’s

Bubba, on the phone with Darlene, leans over and lands a soft peck on the lips as my right hand closes the car door.  I surreptitiously whispered that the Coke Vlogging Awards was transferred to Greenbelt instead of MOA.  He mouthed, “why” and casually my shoulders shrugged, “Maybe because of the rain?”

dsc07625.JPG

“Yea, but Jane says the Coke’s blogger event was transferred to Greenbelt,” he says on the phone.  I was squirming in my seat, debating whether to blurt out my plan or just remain quiet at the passenger’s side.  I didn’t want him sending Darlene or anyone else to the wrong venue.

dsc07657.JPG

I had to keep my lips closed.  I made a reservation at Myron’s for a dinner date with Bubba.  Our initial plan that evening was to attend the Coke event but after lunch I decided to take out Bubba for a date.

dsc07665.JPG

With a glowing review from Lori of Dessert Comes First, Myron’s was the choice in mind (as the place to celebrate the opening of the Beijing Olympics…) to take an ordinary evening and celebrate my relationship with Bubba.  It’s been a while since we last had a romantic dinner.

dsc07669.JPG

Myron’s is a handsome sophisticated restaurant located at the corner of Greenbelt 5.  Gray tables and brown and orange chairs fill the room, including a funky couch with green polka design.  On their tables stood a short yellow flower parked in its own solitude.  A leopard candleholder catches the eye and casts a warm romantic glow on the dining experience.  Carefully arranged square mirrors adorn the wall as well as an abstract painting at the far end.  Get transfixed in the enormous wine display that houses their reasonably priced wine collection.

dsc07618.JPG

Owner Mon Eugenio, a seasoned restaurateur put together an irresistible menu with a wide range of dishes from grilled steaks to creative appetizers and pasta.

On the Table:

Prawn Bisque PHP 190

Pumpkin soup is always the favorite –that or clam chowder.  Ordering something new started the mood right.  The prawn bisque was split into two and served with slender toasted garlic “crouton” with bacon bits.  One slurp of the soup opened our disposition to greater things to come.  The essence of fresh prawns was evident in the thick creamy soup.

dsc07648.JPG

Bianca’s Cut PHP 900

My carnivorous side is on the prowl lately although it’s been daunting the pockets.  Roast “1855 Brand” Premium Black Angus Rib Eye of Beef.  I was eyeing the 400 grams (which looked better priced at P1575++ than Mamou’s P1680++) but opted to go for the smaller cut.  Served with a bulb of roasted garlic and vegetables, the 240 grams rib eye was perfectly grilled as ordered.  It came with 2 sauces, a strong Shiraz demi glaze and a flavorful Peppercorn sauce.  The meat was tender and has sufficient flavor –the only grievance is the slice of meat that was slimmer than anticipated.  Steak has to be buffed, one where the mouth gapes wide open for a bite.

dsc07660.JPG

All steaks come with a choice of starch, baked potato, mashed potato, French fries or garlic/steamed rice.  Baked potato with Ementhal cheese was very tempting but conventional side kicked in with the order of fries.

dsc07645.JPG

US Angus Black and Blue Burger PHP 450

There was no description of the burgers but the choice of US Angus Black and Blue burger was made prior to reading the menu.  Kubiertos and Dessertcomesfirst both ordered this bolstering my selection.  US Angus Beef burger with mushroom and peppercorn served with towering onion rings –the best I have tasted and fries.  Not a big fan of onion rings but this one proved to be the exclusion as it converted me to an instant admirer.

Service is knowledgeable and efficient by a friendly young staff.  An excellent dinner at Myron’s was enjoyed tremendously and I was glad that among the three choices I had that night, Myron’s delivered.

Mamou

Saturday dinner was spent at Mamou’s with my high school friends.  It’s been a long time since I’ve last seen my PIQC friends.  The last time we sat down for anything was a potluck dinner at my place last December where I cooked new dishes like Cajun Chicken, Pizza Roll and Beef Crispy.  Mark and Anne missed that dinner unfortunately.  When we all decided to get together, I initially planned to bring them to Sanctuario Tagaytay in Metrowalk or Chelsea at Serendra.  Since we all haven’t tried Mamou, I suggested having the dinner there.

dsc05484.JPG

Reservation at Mamou is done differently.  There are only two schedules for dinner reservation –630PM and 830PM, which means that if you made a reservation at 630, you have to finish by 820 to make way for the incoming guests.  A certain Annie sent me an SMS to confirm my reservation and the number of party attending.  She also sent me a second message sometime within the day regarding “Live Maine Lobsters” we can order in the evening.

dsc05490.JPG

CW and I arrived at 645PM.  At Mamou’s, you will enjoy a home ambience and a gracious welcome.  The staff are very respectful (especially one whose name appears to be Francis) but service of the rest of the crew is a bit inconsistent.  As I call on one wait staff, he hesitated significantly since he probably wasn’t designated to wait in our area.  Since Grace called and informed me that she will be late, CW and I placed our orders.  It said on the menu that it takes 20 minutes if you order the steak.

dsc05505.JPG

Sean and Angel arrived at 730pm.  Grace coming from work had to pick up Mark and Anne.  Since it was raining all day and traffic was bad, they arrived at 820PM.  My PIQC friends are almost always on time and are rarely late for our meet ups.  For something fortuitous like the typhoon and the heavy traffic it causes, the dinner schedule quite limits the dining time.  Good food is usually enjoyed slowly especially when dining with good friends.

dsc05479.JPG

On the Table:

dsc05489.JPG

Angus Prime Steak (14 ounces) PHP 1680

We already started eating before everybody arrived since I was really very hungry.  I was so excited to order this and have been craving for it since the last time I was at Serendra.  I’ve read so much about Mamou’s steaks.  I heard that even PGMA chooses to dine here with the 1st family.  A 400g steak priced at almost PHP 1700 is quite steep for a non-steakhouse joint but I shrugged and gave it a go.

dsc05512.JPG

I debated whether to get medium or medium well and settled on the latter.  It was served with your choice of 2 sidings.  I decided to get the red steak rice and corn pudding.  I was so excited to eat the red meat and had to resist the urge to grab it with my bare hands.  Patience is a virtue after all.  It was served on a white plate slanted by a small bowl underneath.  The inclined surface allows the excess oil to slide towards the low side.

dsc05495.JPG

The meat was already cut into slices.  My first bite had a little bit of fat in it.  No complaints there.  Fat after all makes up the flavor of the meat.  It had a good charred crust on the outside but it was a bit overdone in the inside.  The steak was well done and was lacking in taste.  I hesitated to ask for a steak sauce because I didn’t want to insult the chef, but since the meat tasted bland for my taste, I had to ask the waiter for one.  Unfortunately, they didn’t have any steak sauce and I was handed Lee and Perrin’s Worcestershire sauce instead.  I asked for freshly ground pepper to spice up the flavor.

dsc05497.JPG

CW on the other hand didn’t complain at all about the steak.  He enjoyed the side order of rice that came with it, while I instantaneously finished the corn pudding.  I really like corn and Mamou’s corn pudding had the right sweetness and creamy consistency.

dsc05503.JPG

Beer Batter Fish with Potato Wedges PHP 255

It was also served on a white plate, 3 pieces of fish fillets in a light beer batter with 3 unsalted potato wedges.  The fish wasn’t oily and the golden crust had the right crisp as you take a bite of it.  CW also liked this dish a lot.

dsc05506.JPG

Sean and Angel ordered two dishes as well.  One was the Roast Pork and Chicken with Beans and Rice PHP595 (To share serving) and the other was the Beer Batter Fish with Potato Wedges as I recommended.  Whereas the three ordered the Roast Pork and Chicken too and Batac Bolognese.  However, instead of the Bolognese, it was some Clam Pasta in Olive Oil that was served by mistake.

dsc05513.JPG

It was good to see my old friends.  Anne kept the atmosphere light and fun as CW anticipated.  I was so happy to be sharing stories with Grace and Mark again, while we were all delighted to finally meet Sean’s girlfriend of 3 years, Angel.  We met with Grace’s aunt, who we all call Auntie, at Cacao after dinner for some coffee.

dsc05519.JPG

Our total bill for 7 heads was close to PHP 5,000.  I resisted the desire to complain about the steak but Auntie said I should have.  It is my right to do so especially if I’m paying a hefty price for a single dish.

dsc05520.JPG

I haven’t been inspired lately to write about the restaurants I’ve visited the past two weeks.  I thought the visit to Mamou can spruce up the lull I’ve been experiencing in restaurants.  Too bad that I was really disappointed and I felt like having a second dinner that night.  Still, several good reviews of Mamou from other bloggers prompt me to give it another shot.

Mr. T- Bob

Sunday dinner was spent at Tender Bob’s.  We were planning to hit Steak Town in QC, but the hungry pangs made us end up in Tender Bob’s in Greenhills.  Tender Bob’s very first branch was in Greenbelt 3 before when it still had its food court.  It was pretty strong then as people kept piling up in front of their counter.  I remember I used to love ordering the spaghetti, roasted chicken and potato chips from Tender Bob’s.

 On the Table:

Potato Chips (I forget the actual name) PHP 145 ++

Obviously it was popular on the table and to me too as it was finished before I can take a snapshot of it.  Serving is good size and comes with sour cream (which used to be thicker before) and cheese dip.  I love ordering this and bringing it to the movie as my nibbles.

Porterhouse Steak PHP 270 ++ (2)

Joanne and I ordered 1 Porterhouse Steak each.  Hers was hard to cut into but mine was okay.  The steak is about 5 oz and for PHP 270, you’d expect it to be ordinary.

All steak orders come with vegetables (which are bland and unseasoned) and one order of side dish, which can either be fries, mashed potato, garlic or java rice.  It was once a favorite fast food outlet for me.  But Tender Bob’s is not how I used to remember it, at least not with the food.  I also used to like the burgers from Tender Bob’s because their beef patties are of premium quality.  I’m not sure if that has changed over the years with the cost of prices nowadays.
