7107 International Music Festival, Spectacular Now

We missed Dau by a split hesitation whether to take it or not.  He knew he read it in the driving directions and location map in the Survival Guide but asked the sleepless lady on the passenger seat to verify with a nod, but received head-shaking instead and a know-it-all answer that SCTEX will somehow lead to Clark.  Of course, she is wrong since there were no rice fields and a small bridge.  We took the next one, Mabalacat, and finally found our way to Global Logistics City in Clark Pampanga without any hitches.

Arrived 430ish at the venue just in time to catch a little bit of Up Dharma Down, who closed their set with Tadhana.  Found a sweet spot with the rest of his crew and pitched our humble camp.  The cool weather was just perfect, like everything about this music fest was aligned with the stars, a light breeze and the sun setting slowly.

Red Jumpsuit Apparatus opened with Face Down and I wanted to run away to the middle of the moving crowd and just get lost –“get pushed around, fall to the ground.”  “Well, I tell you my friend one day this world is gonna end…”  I squeezed in and jumped in between mats like a little mousy to make my way to the front-mid part but the big man trailed behind and before we could make our way to the crowd, the song ended.  Retreated back to camp.

Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Kendrick Lamar and Empire of the Sun got the massive crowd’s energy going all the way until the stage was set for Red Hot Chili Peppers.  RHCP unlocked their set list with Can’t Stop.

Kim Kardashian Divorces Kris Humphries 2 Months after Multi-Million Dollar Wedding, TRUE

Coming from meeting with E! Channel today in Hong Kong, I found out that Kim Kardashian reportedly filed for divorce last night.  It comes as surprise because E! Channel just showed the debut of the multi-million-dollar wedding a few weeks ago in a 2-part E! special and the reruns were actually still shown up to last week.

Kim Kardashian breaks up divorce Kris Humphries

The divorce papers to end marriage with Kris Humphries will catch a lot of people by surprise since it’s only been approximately 72 days since the marriage in August.  That dreamy “Kim Kardashian” fairytale wedding filled with product-placements seemed like a great success and a special union.

Philippine Blog Awards 2010 WINNERS List

The Philippine Blog Awards theme this year is Beyond Blogging, which is quite apt since blogging has already evolved.  Together with social media networks and online forums, BLOGS started as one of the empowering platforms where a person or a group can express an opinion or talk.  But it has gone beyond expressing a thought and sharing it with the world.

Bloggers are now involved in other forms of media.  The causes and actions have gone offline and become manifest in the real world.  No longer are projects limited to the Internet and the Web, but are seen in classrooms, in the streets, and even in the homes.  Take for example the Blogging 101 session Juned, Arpee and I facilitated for Starbucks’ social corporate responsibility project dedicated to the Pembo school students.  This became a launch pad for Pembo to have a voice on community issues as well as an avenue to share the positive insights learned from Hands on Manila’s Galing Mo Kid program.

Other than this, Juned has been an active advocator of education by means of blogging or online sources organizing community forums/training.

Bloggers have transcended past the online planet and with each blogger having their own goals and means to achieve and projects to complete to make a difference in the community, they are now essentially part of the real world.  Bloggers have indeed gone beyond blogging.

The 2010 Philippine Blog Awards was opened with startling attire from that evening’s host, Gabe Mercado, clad in his PeeJays and oversized bedroom slippers.  UnderSecretary Manuel L. Quezon III was the guest speaker who mentioned in his welcome remarks that blogging can go beyond the cyberspace and into advocacy campaigns.

The categories were grouped into 4 sets.  The invited presenters were:

  1. Blogging stalwarts, Kutitos.com’s Gail dela Cruz-Villanueva and Ms. Google Aileen Apolo-de Jesus
  2. Lovely blogger and more popularly known as Flaircandy, Hannah Villasis and little moi, Between Bites
  3. 1st PBA Travel Award winner Ivan Henares and famous tech blogger, Jayvee Fernandez
  4. Ivan of famed PCOS Machine Twitter Account and momblogger and family values advocator, Ms. Noemi Dado

RP5 Banks a Win Against Kuwait

The RP Nationals won against Kuwait, 85-71 to claim another game victory in the 25th FIBA Asia Championship at the Tianjin Gym in Tianjin, China.  Powerade-Team Pilipinas was leading throughout the game with a comfortable 19 points lead in the 4th quarter stretch.

If China clinched a win against Jordan at 7pm today, the RP5 will avoid a possible confrontation with the Chinese. Then the Jordanians square off with the Philippines in a knockout quarterfinal match.

Cyrus Baguio led the RP team with 14 points while Asi Taulava finished in double figures with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Manila News Today: August 11, 2009

PGMA’s Statement of Assets and Liabilities (SAL)

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s declared net worth doubled from P66.8 million in 2001 to P143.54 million in 2008, which means 114% growth.  In comparison to the other presidents, that growth rate is quite massive.  The late President Corazon Aquino’s declared net worth grew by only 4.8% from 1989 to 1992.  Fidel Ramos’ was 34.2% during his term while Joseph Estrada’s was 7.2% from 1998 to 1999.

The President’s allies said that the growth in assets must have come from real estate and stock earnings.

Malacañang claims that there are no irregularities in Pres. Arroyo’s wealth and denies that amassed wealth is from the government.

Note that the Statement of Assets and Liabilities is DECLARED.  Who checks the undeclared?

25th FIBA Asia Men’s Championship Update

Powerade-Team Pilipinas clinched its 77-70 victory against Chinese-Taipei yesterday after Willie Miller sunked a huge three-point shot.  The win is a good motivation going to a game versus defending champion Iran today.  In order to qualify for the knockout quarterfinals, Team Philippines must achieve at least one victory in its two remaining elimination round games.

Guiao is positive with the team’s chance against Iran if they continue the morale and shooting percentage from yesterday’s game.  Team Pilipinas sealed 15 of 30 three pointers with James Yap burying six triples, 3 in succession during the 3rd quarter, while Miller contributed five.  Another key element was RP team’s defense strategy that only allowed the Taiwanese shooters only one 3-point conversion in 15 attempts.

Games on Tuesday (Tianjin gym)
9 a.m. – UAE vs Kazakhstan
11 a.m. – Iran vs RP
2 p.m. – Kuwait vs Japan
4 p.m. – Chinese-Taipei vs Korea
7 p.m. – Lebanon vs China
9 p.m. – Jordan vs Qatar

The game versus Kuwait is scheduled on Wednesday.

RP 77 – Yap 23, Miller 17, Thoss 8, Pennisi 8, Baguio 6, Helterbrand 6, Raymundo 5, Dillinger 3, Taulava 2, Norwood 2, Aguilar 0, Santos 0.

Taipei 70 – Tseng 21, Lee 8, Chang 8, Lin 7, Wu 6, Chang TH 6, Tien 6, Wang 4, Su 2, Yang 2, Chen 0, Wu CL 0.
Quarters: 16-21, 33-35, 62-54, 77-70.

Pinoys Go Gaga Over the Lady

Tonight is the much-anticipated concert of Lady Gaga staged at Araneta Coliseum.  The tickets are supposedly sold out!  The concert produced by Ovation Productions is expected to seize an electrifying performance from Lady Gaga.  I’m not a big fan but if there’s one song that Lady Gaga can make me dance to, it’s “Just Dance.”  I loved it on the movie “Make it Happen” and it’s a cheer-upper when I hear it on the radio.

New P500 Bill Design

22-year old Revo Naval designed a P500 bill that features two democracy heroes, the late former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. and the late former president Corazon Aquino.  The design was first posted on his site www.peaceloveandrevolution.com and soon newspapers caught up the bit.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said they are now considering the possible design of a new P500 bill that might have the same concept, recognizing the contributions of the couple to national unity.  Lay-outs might be ready by October and if approved, the first batch of P500 bills with Cory and Ninoy’s images will be out early 2010.

Meanwhile, Noy Noy Aquino, only son of the Aquinos, is open to running for a higher office if the need should arise.

Red in the Face (or somewhere else)

I just had the most embarrassing moment of my adult life.  I wish I can crawl under a rock and live there.

Spent 3 hours at this poker club playing the card sport I like.

I had AdKd on the button and raised it to 120.  The small blind who has been as steady as a rock called and the big blind as well.

Flop: 5s 7d 10h

Small blind is first to act and he went all in with 250

Big blind calls.

I debated against it but I had over cards and redraw of flush so I called.  I thought both of them were all in.

Turn: 8d

BB bets 200.

I folded.

River: 9h

SB shows pocket of 6.

BB shows 10d and 6c.

Both of them hit the straight and split the pot.

I have another story of how my pocket of Aces got cracked too but I’m only prolonging my agony.  I had a bad night at poker.  I wish I can say period at this point.  I wish it ended there.

Bubba rang and it was my queue to go.  I played until the dealer button.  I had my chips changed at the counter.  The lady cashier says bye to me as well as the chip changer.  I bid them farewell with a smile, which they returned in kind.  Their constant congeniality makes me forget for a second my bad nights on the table.

On the way out, I say bye to a poker buddy.  He looks back and says bye too and I exited.

As I was coming down the stairs, I felt my back was wet.  My suspicion emerges.  In the car, my phone beeps and I dread what my gut tells me…

My poker buddy sent an SMS: “It’s the time of the month huh?  Ingat pauwi.”

The car was moving but I immediately got up the seat and asked Bubba to check.  Even before he opened his mouth, his eyes that’s usually chinito became otherwise, which told me everything.  I have to see for myself so I turn my head and see the red mark on my pants.

The red mark is as big as my hand!!!  How subtle.

It looked like China’s flag was on my butt!!!

I smacked myself on the head.  I cringe.  Cringe.  CRINGE.  CRINGE.  I kept cursing.  And I don’t normally curse.  Not even when a person gets me so angry.  I cursed my recklessness.  I smacked myself on the head again.  “Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabe!!!,” I wailed.  He had a stern look on his face.  Oh no, I’m gonna hear a mouthful of why I didn’t do this or didn’t do that.  He let on a mini tirade.  He was mad because he felt bad for me.  Perhaps, he only doesn’t want people to make fun of me.

I paused and felt like a smile was creeping around my lips.  Why the hell was I about to smile, I thought to myself.  I wailed again.  Bubba, “you probably stained the chair.”  I wailed again like a wolf howling in the cold lonely night.   With my hands on my face, I kept shaking my head.  I cannot believe this has happened to me.  I am still shaking my head as I type this.  I wish now more than ever that I were born a guy!

The place was packed to the roof because there was an ongoing tournament as well.  The lady cashier, chip changer and at least 15 other people must have seen the red flag.  It was as loud as an ambulance on a mission.  I initially told myself that I wouldn’t care.  I do not know those people anyway and they are not important to me.  I am not important to them either.

Bubba told me that this is probably a sign that I should stay away from that place.  It’s so much easier to convince myself to never again show my face there.

Back in the car, I stared in space for a bit then cringed again.  Can one get tired of cringing?  I suddenly laughed to Bubba’s bewilderment.  I said I feel really embarrassed and angry… and SILLY!  I am now going to be remembered for the China flag on my butt.  I am now going to be the “BUTT” of the joke.  Every pun intended.  Such a nightmare but it was also an amusing circumstance.  It just so happens that I’m the miserable victim… which probably makes it funnier.

by the way, this is not MY b*tt

Misery loves company and my thoughts were initially filled by images of Edison Chen and HK.  Commercial break: I received confirmation today that bigger news are about to break loose.  The news reached me last week but I was a non-believer.  Somebody confirmed today that it’s true though.  HK and another K involved in a sandal.  Yes, a sandal video.  I’m not going to put a C there even if you paid me a million dollars.  You heard me right, sandal.

SIGH.  There are worse scenarios than mine.  And definitely, there are far more important issues than sandals.  Is the administration manipulating us under our noses?  Charter change is one serious topic that gets my blood boiling.  But not this.  I cannot be angry over this night.  I find it quite funny on the contrary.  I’m sure the people at the Metro Card Club did too.

At least, I gave them a good laugh.  I was sick to my stomach but heck, I gave MYSELF a good laugh.  That counts for something.

I really don’t know what to make of it.  Saying that I do not care what those people think sounds defensive.  And there’s no reason for me to be defensive.  None has been offensive so far.  Earnestly, a huge part of me feels embarrassed.  My heart throbs at the image of them looking at my bloodied butt (and smiling secretly or laughing openly).  At the other end of the spectrum however, I am tickled by what a riot the whole scenario was.  It’s really interestingly hilarious to me!

There are two different feelings.  Which do I pick?  Of course, the one that’s easier to carry every day.

In reality, I know that I will still continue to go to work tomorrow, eat three meals a day, love the people around me, and if I want to, play poker at the same place.  It doesn’t change who I am.  In my book, it just adds to another interesting (or icky) story to tell.  It became the catalyst that triggered this entry after all.

I feel so much better writing about it.  Writing is always such a release.

Now, that’s about the end of it.  PERIOD.

American Idol Season 8 Finale

There is a new American Idol and it’s Kris Allen.  KRIS ALLEN, ladies and gentlemen.

Gotta give props to Adam Lambert because he was really a superstar all throughout the competition and he brought AI to a whole new level –singing and stage presence –wise.

Kris Allen despite missing some key notes in Kara DioGuardi’s written song, No Boundaries, triumphs as the last man standing in Season 8 of American Idol.  Even if Adam did a better performance hitting the notes, I feel that Kris’ acoustic rock voice suits the song better than Adam’s mellow Aerosmith voice.

Other than the star-studded guest list that includes Kiss and Queen, Kara DioGuardi made the season finale more memorable with an epic showdown between her and “bikini girl” Katrina Darrell.  Not so long ago during the auditions, Kara pointed out that Katrina didn’t hit the right notes.  Katrina made a sarcastic rebuttal that distressed Kara to showing her how it’s properly done.

At the end of the singing duel, Kara unveiled her bikini body by unbuttoning her trench dress to flash a black string bikini she had on underneath.  Ryan commented that by flashing the world at the end of the song, Kara won a bet and a donation to charity.

In other news, Hayden Christensen (no, not the infamous local doctor with scandalous videos) and Djimon Honsou stars in Mandrake the Magician adaptation.  Anakin Skywalker of Star Wars is supposed to do the lead role in the film “Mandrake.”  MTV news however reports that a representative from Hayden’s camp denies that he has anything to do with the film.

The movie co-star Djimon Honsou will follow Hayden’s character, an “underground magician and escapologist” who is approached by the CIA to do some work after “a daring escape from an SUV that has been dropped out of an plane at the Burning Man Festival.  Hounsou will presumably be taking on the role of Mandrake’s assistant, Lothar.  I love Djimon Honsou in Blood Diamond and I cannot wait to see another film with him in it.

The Zeitgeist and Moon movies are the two movies I want to watch soon.  Have you seen Zeitgeist?
