Stockton Place

Getting stuck in traffic for 2.5 hours last night is the main reason I avoid going to Makati during weekdays for the past 3 to 4 years.  I made a table reservation for 4 at 8pm but my Twin and I arrived almost close to 9pm.  I thought we’ll be arriving earlier at 730pm when we left my office at 6:15pm.  Good thing my brother’s good friend JP was there to hold it for us.

Stockton Place has been on my hit list for the past month but I couldn’t get my schedule straight other than they’re also always full.  A simple black chalkboard bearing Stockton Place serves as your mark, other than the cool white brick façade.  Inside is a small dining area with the menu chalked on the large blackboards on the wall.

The outdoor patio should be lovely during balmy days.  Currently they are only open for dinner service, but Stockton looks like a good place for a Sunday brunch too.

The men let me handle the ordering.  I was too tired to chew over the choices so went ahead and voiced out our mission… it weighed almost 1kg.

Talking Tongues

Right after the doctor’s appointment last Saturday, we had two restaurant choices to visit, one being an Indian restaurant along Jupiter Street and the other a Chinese-Indonesian restaurant in Salcedo Village.  Talking Tongue won the decision and off we went to LPL Manor along Leviste Street.

Suddenly the rain poured heavily and the winds blew strong.  Inside the car, we saw a lady struggling with her umbrella that turned the other way.  That didn’t stop us from trying out what the restaurant has to offer.

Yellow walls and striped chairs first catch your eye in this laidback restaurant.  There are also some interesting pieces of art scattered on the walls and counter area.  A chalkboard shares their specials for the day.  I noticed Indonesians occupy two tables and the sight of them made the experience almost authentic already.  The anticipation for the food heats up.  “Heat” was definitely the right term.

On the Table

Corn Fritters (3pcs) PHP 72

Battered whole kernels of corn fried to a golden crisp.  I like the crunch of the corn fritters as well as the semi-sweet semi-milky taste to start our meal with.

Perkerdel PHP 30

It was a small baby-fist size potato cake that had a flat texture on the outside but mushy to flaky potato inside.  The moist cake had little red veins to it.  I like it as it is while Bubba needed the sweet chili sauce to add to the taste.

Beef Rendang PHP 288

Most might be more familiar with Beef Rendang drenched with its spicy coating but Talking Tongues’ version of Beef Rendang has dry coating.  Bobby Flay is an advocator of dry coating on his meats in Throwdown.  Surprisingly, even if the dish was a bit drier than usual, the sauce soaked through the meat evenly and discerningly.  There is a generous amount of the spiced Rendang sauce speckled on top of the beef for added flavor.

Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce (8pcs) PHP 300

The chicken satay arrived like an army with the backup of vegetable mix on the side and peanut sauce underneath.  The chicken meat was moist and tender and it was a delight to eat on its own with its grill glaze and garnish of fried spring onions.  If you want to intensify the flavor with some sweet peanut-y sauce, then pour a generous amount of the peanut sauce on top before taking a bite.  I can’t quite decide if it was better on its own or with the sauce as both were wonderfully delicious.

Some people who speak in tongues believe that they are talking in a divine language, often called the language of angels… At Talking Tongues, they speak the language of authentic Indonesian-Chinese cuisine at the heart of Salcedo Village in Makati.

Events This Weekend Album

Legaspi Sunday Market

I’ve been to several weekend markets in Manila: Pick Manila of Celadon, Salcedo Market (which is a favorite), the Market at the Lung Center of the Phil in Quezon City, Market at the Hills, etc.  Last weekend, it was about time to visit the Legaspi Sunday Market.  What better time to go than a leisure Sunday morning right before the full blast of summer.

The Legaspi Sunday Market is ranched in a spacious parking area with very few trees for shade.  It’s more spacious than the other weekend markets but the dining area is more limited.  Trashcans weren’t also that many, which makes it tricky to implement CLAYGO (Clean As You Go).  The stalls here are interesting and have a number of specialty foods to offer.  Like other weekend markets, the goods range from massage slippers, handicrafts, organic products, fruits, vegetables, seafood, meat and gourmet items.  Cuisines vary from Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Thai and Chinese.  Since we don’t see much Chinese fare on the other weekend markets, Bubba decided to try Chinese this time.  He ordered Peking Duck from Cheryls’ Cuisine and Samosas (PHP 20) from Pizza de Grazzia while I got Takoyaki (PHP 50)

The free taste is still a common practice in these markets.  I tried the chicken longganisa from Yrreg’s and the taste won me over.  We ordered half-kilo of chicken longganisa (PHP 180) from Yrreg’s Meat All You Can.  It didn’t taste like it had any preservatives, which is exactly I’m looking for since a doc advised me on a limited diet for the meantime (no preservatives, no chips, no transfat, no chocolates… 🙁  no seafood.  How cruel for me right?)

Yrreg’s Home Made Processed Meat has no food color, no MSG and no preservatives.  They also offer other meat products such as Beef Tapa PHP 180/half kilo, Pork Tocino PHP 120/half kilo, Pork Longganisa PHP 150/half kilo, Embotido PHP 90/piece, Seasones Liempo/Porkchop PHP 250/kilo.  For orders, please contact Gerry at 0915-6066845.

We are also happy to see that Becky Kitchen’s products are also available.  We got the walnut raisin chocolate cookies (PHP 240).

It is quite refreshing that the market has more breathing space and not overly crowded with stalls.  Al fresco dining and fresh produce retail are strengthened by another lively and promising weekend market in Legaspi Sunday Market.
