Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez on SKY Cable HD

Too many Alvarez boxers that this fight is named Mayweather vs. Canelo instead of the latter’s last name.  Supposedly the highest purse fight in boxing history with $41.5 cool million as his minimum guarantee to just step inside the ring.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, 23, will be facing 36-year-old Floyd Mayweather Jr.  this coming Sunday (Manila time) –both fighters with undefeated record.  Mayweather maintains that he is still at the peak of his game and continues to be his usual confident arrogant self.

Canelo is apparently the Spanish translation to the boxer’s ginger hair.  No mistake that he is also a world champ even if Mayweather dismisses the fact saying there are just too many belts in the field now and these young bloods easily get one compared to the time veterans really have to earn it the long hard way.

Catch the Mayweather vs. Canelo fight this weekend.  SKY Cable is giving this PPV fight FREE and in HIGH DEFINITION via SKYcable FREE VIEW HD to all subscribers with the HD box.  The event will air this Sunday, Sept 15.  Live telecast begins at 9AM.

For those SKY Cable subscribers who do not have the HD Digibox, other than me suggesting you get one to change your life and up your viewing experience, you can still catch this real-time, as it happens, via LIVESTREAMING on iWantv also at 9AM.

July 13, 2012 as National Day of Remembrance for King of Comedy Dolphy

President Benigno Aquino declared under Proclamation No. 433 that Friday, July 13, 2012 is the National Day of Remembrance for the late Philippine king of comedy Rodolfo Vera Quizon, to his millions of fans, Dolphy.  The sad news broke out on social media re Dolphy’s death last Tuesday after he succumbed to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

In a press statement, “The President issued the proclamation in recognition of how the nation deeply feels the passing of Dolphy. In the proclamation, the President cited Dolphy as a man who will live on in Philippine cultural history—and in the hearts of many of his countrymen.  President Aquino in his proclamation said that every milestone that Dolphy marked in a career that spanned decades, raised the standards of the entertainment industry, and strengthened our cultural identity, giving innumerable aspirants an example to look up to.”

Via Google Images

Malacanang is citing Dolphy’s contributions to Philippine culture, arts and entertainment as well as his philanthropic and generosity towards Filipinos in general.

However, July 13, 2012 is NOT a non-working holiday.  People have clamored for Malacanang to declare a Day of Mourning but as Dolphy’s family has expressed, Dolphy would want to be remembered for his life and not passing.  We all want to celebrate his life and the late comedian’s art and artistry, his kindness and generosity, and deep patriotism.

Some people remarked that Palace, receiving proposals to commemorate Dolphy’s life, should have declared his birthday instead as the National Day of Remembrance to make it more significant.

The last day of the public viewing, where fans can pay their respect, will be on Saturday, from 8 am to 3 pm.

The films of deeply loved Dolphy will be shown on Cinema One, SKY Cable Channel 56, from July 14 to July 20, 6am onwards.

Pacquiao vs Margarito on November 14, 2010

Will another one bite the dust?

Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao steps again in the ring on November 14th, Manila Time, to face another opponent in the face of Antonio Margarito.  They will plow it out for a vacant WBC (World Boxing Council) Jr. Middleweight Title that, to some critics, is a fictitious weight class.

Filipinos would like to believe that this would be another easy win for Pacquiao since he is the best pound for pound fighter in the world and Antonio Margarito is coming off a 1-year suspension for getting caught trying to use illegal hand wraps.  If Pacquiao does win, it will be a new title in his eight weight class.

But don’t write off Margarito just yet.  Margarito’s camp says that his height, reach and size will be the difference.  He better know how to use them though because with Pacquiao’s speed, he doesn’t have enough time to strategize deliberately in the ring.  He won’t be able to see what hit him.

And this will be another walk in the park for the boxing champ, Manny Pacquiao.  I really hope that Margarito puts up a great fight against Pacquiao to give the boxing fans their money’s worth.  Otherwise, it’s just a win-win scenario for both fighters with huge purses in their pockets while the biggest loser is… the fans.  Pac, pac, pac!

The Fight is On! Pacquiao versus Clottey. March 13, 2010

There’s going to be a fight on March 14, 2010 (Manila Time).  Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao will stand at one corner.  The question is, who will stand at the other corner?  Will it be Ghanaian Joshua Clottey  or Floyd Mayweather Jr.?  After weeks of negotiation circus, Top Rank’s Bob Arum finally decided to set the WBO welterweight title fight against Clottey.  The negotiation fizzled out between the two dominant American boxing promotional companies when Mayweather Jr’s camp demanded for a rigorous drug testing procedure –random examination like the Olympics that can be really close to the fight night.

The boxing commission only requires urine testing but the stringent drug testing will call for random blood and urine sampling prior to and after the proposed fight.  Team Pacquiao couldn’t agree to the blood testing 30 days before the match concerned that this might affect Pacman’s performance.  Pacquiao filed a lawsuit against Mayweather’s camp last month, claiming several members had defamed him by intimating he uses performance-enhancing drugs.

The Pacquiao-Mayweather fight was supposed to be one of boxing’s biggest revenue-generating fights.  There’s still time before March to reopen talks but Arum has closed his doors to Mayweather for March, more especially that he feels Mayweather will start the nonsense media talk again about the testing and regulations.

Pacquiao’s new opponent in Clottey is a strong, aggressive African that beat Zab Judah of the United States for the IBF Welterweight title in August 2008 and lost a split decision to Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto last June.

Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Coming to a Close?

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum made a trip to the Philippines to talk to Manny Pacquiao, who broke records of being the only champion with 7 world boxing titles under his belt.  After Pacquiao’s clear welterweight win over Miguel Cotto last November, everyone is slating Floyd Mayweather Jr. as the next in line to face the formidable Filipino boxer.

March 13, 2010 is the date they are eyeing.  This can be the biggest boxing event of next year since people have been anticipating this match-up.  Pacquiao is the top pound-for-pound fighter while Mayweather is currently No.2 –although the No.1 position is not new to Mayweather since he was No.1 before he retired in June 2008.

The public has been clamoring for this fight to happen but according to Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s coach, March 13 is too fast a turnaround.  Remember that Pacquiao suffered a broken eardrum during his duel with Cotto.  Roach wants Pacquiao to be in his best possible shape before he steps again in the ring.  Roach is looking into a May 2010 bout but that will coincide with the election month.  Pacquiao already filed his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) this week to run for Congress.

Ticket for the live fight is expected to cost around $2,500 (P117,500) while the cheapest seats at around $500 (P25,000).

Will Schaefer and Arum get this deal done and set a fight date before the 2nd half of next year?  The public will have to wait and see.

Another One Bites the Dust: Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao Wins Over Miguel Cotto Via TKO

The Pacman still has the hand and foot speed and the left big swing to grab another belt –his seventh world title across several weight classes.  He proves once again that he is the best pound for pound fighter of his time.

The MGM Grand was packed to the roof, with seats all sold-out; the anticipating crowd inside the arena watched one of the best matches of Pacquiao as of late (Pacquiao supposedly got a 13 million dollar purse.  Add the endorsements to that and you have the richest Filipino boxer of all time…).

Round 1 appeared to be Cotto’s round throwing more punches and with them landing on Pacman’s head and body.

Round 2 was clearly Pacquiao’s round scoring a knockdown from Cotto.  Cotto showed ferocious counterpunches.  The Pacman was too quick to sustain serious damage.  When Pacquiao unleashed a leftie, Cotto fell to the floor, dazed.  Since then Cotto didn’t look like he was the same fighter that stepped in the ring barely 5 minutes that passed.

Rounds 3-7 were all in Pacquiao’s favor marking another knockdown from Cotto in Round 4.  Everyone held their breath predicting that the bout will end soon with Pacquiao unleashing the deadliest that will bring Cotto down for the third time –and for good.

However, the 29-year old underdog from Puerto Rico didn’t relent so easily.  He got pumped up with his second wind and worked the ring, letting Pacquiao run after him.  He released a few jabs and body shots that connected.  It seems like he was back on his strategy of attacking Pacquiao’s body.

Judging from Pacquiao’s cauliflower ear and minor cuts under his eyes along with some bruises, Cotto did land some heavy shots of his own.  It was definitely a toe-to-toe match than Pacquiao versus Hatton or Dela Hoya.  You definitely got your money’s worth watching the fight.

Despite a puffed and brutally bruised face and spitting blood, Cotto stayed in the game, unyielding, hanging on to every round, surviving.  He earned my respect with his athleticism -I heard he’s also loved like Pacquiao because he’s really a very nice guy outside the ring.  Rounds 9 and 10, he looked hopeful to land a devastating left hook that can knock Pacquiao out.  But Pacquiao just wouldn’t have it –and he also didn’t want the fight to go to scorecards even if it was clearly his arm the referee would raise at the end of the day.  He wanted a knockout that his coach, Freddie Roach predicted.

Referee Kenny Bayless stepped in for the boxer’s safety and waved his hands to put an end to the fight after Cotto received a big left to the head and looked like he couldn’t defend himself intelligently. The end came in the 55-second mark of the final round.

Pacquiao has successfully stripped off Cotto his WBO welterweight belt.  Pacquiao’s speed coupled with throwing many punches from different angles is a firepower that is tough to extinguish -plus the fact that he has the unwavering heart of a champion.

Kanye West Upstages Taylor Swift at MTV’s Video Music Awards (VMA)

Taylor Swift, the cutest American country pop singer, won Best Female Video in MTV’s Video Music Awards and bested out Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Beyonce.

She took the stage to accept the award and deliver her thanks when Kanye West suddenly jumped on stage and grabbed her microphone to declare that Beyonce should have won because she had the best videos of all time.

The crowd booed the Kanye interruption and Kanye stormed off stage.  Swift was left on stage flabbergasted looking at the floor before she was ushered off stage.  Beyonce was as stunned as Taylor Swift.

Watch what happened

**UPDATE**

Beyonce won Best Video of the Year, the biggest award of the VMA show, and generously shared the spotlight with Taylor Swift.  Beyonce danced her way to the stage, with the Single Ladies playing on the background.  “Wow, this is amazing.  I remember being 17 years old, up for my 1st MTV award with Destiny’s Child and it was one of the most exciting moments of my life. I’d like Taylor to come out and have her moment…”

She then calls Taylor to the stage, “where are you?”  The crowd cheered in uproar.  Taylor comes out in a red ensemble as well, different from her silver backless gown she wore earlier during her acceptance speech, approaches Beyonce and gives her a hug.

“Maybe we could do this again,” Swift opened her statement.  Like any grateful kid, she thanked the director of the video, including the fans who followed her on MySpace and Twitter and her brother’s high school for the video venue.

Surreal Surprise with Bob Blumer

July 17, 2009

Rockwell Tent

Bob Blumer is brilliant in many ways beyond cooking.  His brilliance shows in his creativity and humor.

He signed off his photo with Bubba with “best dishes” playing on the pun of “best wishes.”  That “D” in “dishes” was supposed to be “W.”

Cute.

What could he have penned that set me off like this…

Just between you and me…

(Reveal)

I think that “L” was supposed to be “C.”  He missed the curve.

He definitely wasn’t served Alphabet soup growing up.  Or Alphabet crackers.

Surreal Surprise Dinner with Bob Blumer

Surreal Gourmet’s Bob Blumer visited Manila and whipped up a dinner for me.

It was a raining Friday last January 17 and most offices have allowed their employees to go home early (by 1PM, some companies have canceled work due to heavy rains and probable flash flood.  While the rest of Manila was eager to pack their stuff, I, on the other hand, was standing comfortable and dry in our boardroom in front of a panel presenting our project).  Although there was worry about the heavy rain causing flashflood and crazy Manila traffic on a weekend, many couldn’t pass up the chance to meet Bob Blumer.

The show must go on.

In his show, Glutton for Punishment (now going on its third season), Bob goes to different cities and challenges himself to extreme gastronome adventures against the locals.  Among his attainments are living on nothing but Guinness for one whole week in Dublin, chile-pepper eating contest in Mexico, and many other daunting feats.  As they say, no guts, no glutton!

The Rockwell Tent was the venue for the Discovery Travel and Living event and Giata Fores was at the forefront of the catering service.  Joey Mead hosted the event and couldn’t go tongue fencing with the very funny Bob Blumer.  It seems like she was out of her element but despite the ho-hum hosting skills of Joey, Bob Blumer endeared himself to the enthusiastic crowd especially when he tried our local unfermented egg, “balut.”

On the Table

(Apologies for the poor photos)

Flower Pot Salad

The salad was served on a rectangular tin can representing a flowerpot.  Even if I have tasted flowers on salads (the first experience at Kinabuhayan Café) before, this salad didn’t enthuse much.  It tasted overly flowery making the greens taste a bit on the bitter side.

Beef Cheek Cupcake

Shredded beef balled into a cupcake with a raspberry or beet mashed potato as its “icing”.  It was served unpredictably cold that probably caused parts of the beef to be chewy.  They used the local vegetable “sigarilyas” as a siding that added quite the crunch and texture to the whole dish.  The side dish was more enjoyable than the cold beef.

Existential Eggs

This was the highlight of the meal for me.  The third course arrived looking like Cleopatra, lonely but gallant on top of a wanton carriage.  The fried noodle was weaved together to look like a nest while the slightly cracked egg rest on it.  It was regal in both presentation and taste.  A mélange of flavors rest on your tongue with the creamy goodness of this semi-sweet delicate dessert.  This is the dessert I’d definitely want to be punished repeatedly just to get another serving.

The food, though not as exotic as it sounds and I hoped for, was still worth trying.  All three piqued the gourmet senses despite some elements that were lacking.  The beef was probably affected by the cold weather while it was resting.  The existential egg was worth sitting through the entire course.

There’s always an extreme danger lurking in Bob’s epicurean adventures.  Catch Bob as he takes on exciting culinary challenges in the new season of Glutton for Punishment, only on Discovery Travel and Living.

UFC 100: Cage Show

The UFC 100 shown LIVE on Balls channel last Sunday morning was interesting to say the least.

Three big fights highlighted the hyped UFC 100 event.

Dan Henderson v. Michael Bisping

Dan Henderson knocked out Michael Bisping with a powerful right hand in the second round of the UFC middleweight bout.  Bisping jaw caught the strong right and knocked the Brit out cold.  He fell motionless on the floor.  Before Mario Yamasaki could stop the fight, Henderson made a continuous attack by giving Bisping another tremendous blow in the head.  The crowd roared in delight seeing the drop of Bisping.  Michael Bisping has never been out cold on the floor.  This was the first knockout he received in his career, which proves that Dan Henderson is a better fighter than him.

It’d be great to see a Dan Henderson –Anderson Silva match next.

George St. Pierre v. Thiago Alves

The crowd favorite GSP dominated his fight against Alves right from the clunk of the bell.  He took him down 8 times making his take down average in good precision.  He was constantly working on the ground and even at one point, got Alves’ back.  Alves mustered to get out of the predicament and up on his feet again several times, but he was badly bruised each time.

St. Pierre injured his groin in the third while he was on his back and Alves pushed his leg.  The incident did not provide any help to Alves, who GSP described as the toughest fight of his career.

It went to the judges’ scorecard but obviously GSP won the bout.  St. Pierre won by scores of 50-45, 50-45, 50-44.

Brock Lesnar v. Frank Mir

Brock Lesnar, a former pro wrestler who converted to UFC claiming he wants to showcase his bona fide athleticism.  He has displayed winning performances except in the hands of Frank Mir.  This second meet was to avenge that initial loss.

Lesnar took Mir down, levied his chest against Mir’s to completely immobilize Mir.  He held Mir’s wrist at a distance making it difficult for Mir to defend against the blows.  Lesnar kept pounding at him while Mir assures his corner that he was okay.  2nd round starts with Frank Mir, battered face but still smiling, confident about his game.  Lesnar stuck with his game plan and took Mir down, positioned himself where his massive “extra 20 pound” weight is mashed against Mir’s body.  Mir unfortunately found himself cornered by the cage.  Lesnar capitalized by pounding Mir repeatedly on the head.  Herb Dean stopped the fight 1:48 of the second round.

Lesnar ran around the octagon flipping off the Mandalay Bay Events Center crowd with both middle fingers.  He shouted at Mir as the challenger sat on a stool trying to regain his equilibrium.  Even during the slow motion replay, you can see the thunderous blows he received on the head.  Lesnar while being interviewed by Joe Rogan encouraged the booing fans by saying that he loves the animosity.

UFC 100 really presented some cage action with the additional forearm smash of Henderson and Lesnar’s pounding of Mir and the post fight WWE drama.

(Excerpt from Discovery Travel and Living)

Bobby travels to the capital Manila in this episode to discover a passionate and humorous people, and their love of food. A perfect example of that is Marketman, Manila’s most famous food blogger. He brought Bobby around in Scaledo Market, a weekly Saturday market that highlighted cuisines from various regions in the country and also invited him to a Meryenda party hosted at his home where Bobby had the chance to sample most of Filipino’s favorite afternoon snacks.

Bobby also paid a visit to numerous places of interest that reflected Manila’s colonial past eg; Manila American Cemetery that is the largest cemetery in the Pacific for U.S. personnel killed during World War II. He met up with Carlos Celdran, who brought him around Intramuros, the walled city during the Spanish reign, where the beautiful San Agustin church still stood erected despite 5 earthquakes. For a glimpse of the Chinese influence, Bobby made his way to Binondo, the oldest Chinatown in the world and met up with Binondo expert, Ivan Dy who took him around to try out the Filipino-Chinese cuisine.

In Quiapo, the old downtown where one can experience American, Chinese and Spanish influences all at the same time, Bobby tried the quintessential Filipino street food, balut – a fertilized duck egg with a nearly-developed embryo inside and other street food like deep fried chicken intestines.

For a truly Filipino experience, one has to travel in a jeepney at least once and Bobby did just that and also had the privilege to sit in the new E Jeepney. E Jeepneys or Electric Jeepneys do not hiss, or cough, or sputter, like all public utility jeepneys do. Instead, these Earth-friendly cousins of the jeepney weave their way around the Makati central business district quietly — and with nary a puff of smoke from their glossy behinds.

American Idol

I haven’t had the time to watch TV nowadays, although the TV is open most of the time in the office.  The other group recently lent us a Samsung LCD TV for HD test, neat (I wanna get one for my room!)!  Life at work is overly busy the past few weeks.  And when I get home, the last thing I want to do is stare at the boob tube.  That’s why I terribly miss watching American Idol.  The preliminary/road trip was funny when I caught it 2 months ago (?) on Star World (midnight rerun).  But I haven’t actually watched a single episode this season!  Too bad, when channel affiliates talk about it, I’m so behind all the juice!

Anyhow, I should be inspired to watch again since Adel, the Chick Chik recently sent me an American Idol water glass.  When I first opened the box, I initially thought it was a microphone (because it looked like a packaging for a mic).  Haha, upon closer inspection, it was actually a glass with a microphone design.

Catch first run episodes on Star World every Wednesday and Thursday at 6pm and same night encore at 11pm.  Reruns the next day at 1pm.  Watch it only on Sky Cable!

Well, even if this entry is short, I’m glad I was able to take a break and write.  It’s already 6:30 pm and I still have one contract to finish so I’m hitting the breaks…. Screech —–ciao!
