Thought Bubble: April 24, 2011, Easter Holidays and Stay-cation

Hello folks and kids at heart! 😉

I hope y’all had a wonderful Easter holiday.  Some went to Boracay as usual while others went to other parts of the Philippines or went to HK or elsewhere.  Various also stayed put and enjoyed the quiet Manila.

Stay-cation.  That’s what I did.

Thursday, I spent the whole morning working on an article that had a deadline on the same day.  I finished it in 2.5 hours and I was home-free!

HAPPY.  HAPPY.  HAPPY.

Spring cleaning!  I spent 2 days cleaning my room and organizing my things.  I was on my fours scrubbing the floor and rescrubbing the floor and arranging and rearranging.  It was tiring, with my nails and fingers bruised and embattled… but it was perfect to relax and clear my mind.  I had a blast.  Now, I cannot get enough of my room.

This isn’t me but I was doing the same TWIRLING!

I also cleaned two other areas of the house.  Next on my project list is to clean both my sisters’ rooms.  I’d probably start with the smaller room, Joyce’s.

Other than cleaning and organizing, Bubba and I did DVD marathons that included Passion of the Christ (my 3rd time to watch it), Break-up Club (starring Jaycee Chan, son of Jackie Chan) and Due Date.  And mostly, I stayed offline to avoid getting the “evil eye” from him.

Bubba and I also drove to Tagaytay last Saturday for a short trip – more like a spontaneous lunch at Bawai’s (lucky that we were able to walk in even if it’s strictly by-reservation and they were fully packed except for a table for 2 -meant for US!) and headed back right after.  He did a pitstop at Paseo de Sta. Rosa and checked out the outlet stores while I slept in the car since I didn’t want to do any shopping or window-shopping (plus I was still tired from Thursday and Friday cleaning).

It was great reconnecting with him.  We also heard Service together during Pastor Jeff’s “Saturday Five.”  The Worship just encapsulated the best of this week, in observance of the Holy Week, a THANKFUL heart.

Allow me to share a few passages here:

Mark 16:2-3

The women saw the stone has been rolled and the tomb is open.  They saw a young man sitting on the right side, arrayed in a white robe, and they were alarmed.  And he said unto them, “Do not be alarmed.”

“You seek Jesus, the Nazarene, who has been crucified.  He has risen.”

We encounter unexplainable situations in our lives.  The phrase, “do not be alarmed” was a Message of Peace.  If it’s Jesus we seek, we need not be alarmed.

Philippians 4:7

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Jesus Christ.

Let us all enjoy the presence of the Risen Lord.

Psalm 34:8

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one WHO TAKES REFUGE IN HIM.

AMEN!

After Service, Saturday night, Bubba and I went to Shangri-la Rustan’s and bought lamb chops (Thanks Karen Z for the tip!) and some groceries.  Bubba bought some meat for his family while I bought some to cook for my family.

Sunday, I wanted to strangle myself for not marinating the night before and it took me a while to defrost.  I had no idea how to cook lamb, other than what I previously remember in cooking shows years ago.

Ta-da!  Grilled lamb chops with baby carrots and asparagus.

Rosemary, thyme, steak spice, lemon, olive oil, parsley, white pepper and a secret ingredient!  I just now need to learn how to grill it properly.  It was tender right off the grill but after letting it “rest,” it’s harder to cut but still soft to chew.

Bubba, Mama (it’s hard to please my mom), Joyce and Joanne all gave a thumbs up!

It just makes me happy to serve family.  I think next up is my family of friends. 🙂

Bubba and I spent the afternoon watching Ultimate Fighter (Team GSP v. Team Koscheck) marathon, in between me cleaning again.  1 and half glass of red wine relaxed me while cleaning.

Sunday evening, we went to Shangri-la again for final errands and bumped into Gelo, Issah and Brey at Cibo and spent dinner with them catching up.

Cibo’s Spinach dip with crostini, Pasta Dela Terra and Osso Bucco Gremolata are my favorite dishes in Cibo and will order this again and again and again.

How did you spend your Easter Holidays? 🙂

XO

1st Stop

Desserts Come First at Cupcakes by Sonja | Miss Desserts

Fascinatingly, the first pit stop of the food walk leaves a sweet taste in the mouth.  It was Cupcakes by Sonja, side by side with Miss Desserts shop.  Both lovely little dessert stores offered sweet pinchers, introducing ample sugar in our system to get the group going that Saturday afternoon.

As the name implies, the strength of the first dessert shop café lies on its variety of delicious cupcakes created by Ms. Sonja Ocampo, who studied culinary in New York.

2nd Stop

Going Vietnamese at Zao

Zao was one of the Serendra restaurants I first visited.  I took Bubba out on a dinner date back in 2007, I think.  It was good to visit Zao again as I remember enjoying the meal we had here.  Zao serves Vietnamese dishes at very reasonable prices.

Oh hi Judd! 🙂  Good to bump into ya

On the Table

Fried Spring Rolls PHP 195

8 pieces of lightly deep-fried golden spring rolls with lettuce served on the side to wrap it with.  The inside consists of pork, glass noodles, and mushroom

Fresh Spring Rolls PHP 175

Pho with Meatball, Flank and Tendon

Phos, otherwise known as Vietnamese noodle soup, has their calming effect about them.  I love my pho with tasty meatballs, tender flank and fatty tendon

Just before we reached the 3rd destination, Ivan pointed out the different scene-scapes around Bonifacio Global City.  The group also stopped over at this point and clanked the big orange cylinders.

3rd Stop

Diner Favorites at TGI Friday’s

Upon entering Friday’s, popular worldwide as the best American diner chain, I initially thought, “Ooh something smells good here.”  And you’re really in for a treat as TGI Friday’s continue to serve traditional Western dishes and then some.

The vibe is quite different from other uptight restaurants, as we all know it to serve us a casual, fun atmosphere where service is friendly and world-class.

The ever-interesting Ivan Man Dy

There’s a buzz in the crowd that the place definitely influenced and the excitement grew when Ivan introduced the champion of the world bartending competition (hailing from the Philippines!!!) who displayed his bartending and shaking prowess.

The crowd gasped and cheered as bottles kept flying all over the place.  Quite an entertainment and that will be the day when I see Ivan Man Dy doing the bartending tricks himself in one of his tours 😉

Nachos with Salsa

A visit to Friday’s is never complete for us if we don’t get the Friday’s Three For All (PHP 610) –our definite favorite among the scrumptious appetizers they offer.

On the Table

A Different Platter

I wasn’t able to take down the name of the platter they served us but it contained the buffalo wings, which is the traditional New York-style (Buffalo) deep fried chicken wings marinated in spicy sauce, crispy and fresh celery sticks with tangy Bleu cheese dressing, Sesame Jack Chicken strips which are golden brown chicken breast strips, coated with crispy panko breadcrumbs and sesame seeds –newly introduced, and Parmesan-crusted chicken quesadilla –now who can go wrong with that?

Blogging Pioneers (except the one in blue, me!)

Still retains to be on the top list of where to hang out with friends, colleagues or family while enjoying specialty drinks and mouthwatering appetizers and dishes.  Everyone could use more Friday’s.  No doubt.

5th Stop

Get a Taste of Italy at Pasto Italian Café and Dessert Bar

If we’re craving for good Italian, Pasto is where Bubba and I are headed.  I think I’ve visited most of the Pasto branches, particularly the El Pueblo and Greenhills outlet and in Paseo Center when I was still working in Makati.  Interestingly, it’s my first time to visit their Fort branch and I know it’s been there for quite some time.  It was the 5th stop in Ivan Man Dy’s BGC food walk.

It is actually under the same watchful management of Zao.  Pasto, which means “meal” in Italian, started in 2001 as a place to get good, midrange Italian food.  Pasto’s signature 12-inch thin crust pizzas are freshly baked to perfection in their brick-fired ovens, which makes the taste all the more toasty and different than pizzas baked in regular ovens.

Bubba and I are both regulars in Pasto and our favorite is definitely their crostinis and dips, which is an original of Pasto’s.

On the Table

Crostini

Price depends on your option for dips: chicken pate, pomodoro salsa or creamy spinach

What Bubba and I love to do (which I think I have talked about in a previous post) is take one crunchy crostini and spread chicken pate generously on top as base, put pomodoro salsa next with a drop of the balsamic vinaigrette-olive oil, and a sprinkle of the parmesan cheese… voila, the best appetizer to whet your appetite.  Sometimes I even put a pinch of pepper and a drop of hot sauce for an extra kick.

Anton and Bong followed suit and all three of us snacked on the crostinis while talking about their Caramoan adventures.  At this point, I suddenly missed Bubba boo.

Pasta Genovese

Capellini with shrimps, arugula, pesto, and nuts in a tomato crème sauce

Pizza Di Carne

Tomato-based pizza with the “all-meat” toppings included like Italian sausage, smoked ham, and pepperoni

Pizza Bianca

Pesto-based pizza with assorted seafood

Vietnamese, American and then Italian… it’s like dropping on a food holiday in each of those countries.

The Last Stop Created a Lasting Memory

The Establishment

The Establishment is an elegant, contemporary lounge and bar restaurant that offers different sitting rooms, each laced in its own classy and urbane mood.  Step into the restaurant and be enthralled with the sophisticated designs, the black and white motif with silhouettes that endows the room with stylish mystery.

Our group decked the lounge area called, The Hall, and the fluid wait staff served us a variety of luscious and delightful tapas.

On the Table

Tuna Belly Tataki with 9-Spice Aioli

Seared sashimi grade tuna, mixed greens, tobiko, crispy scallion

Crispy Beef Potstickers

Deep fried beef potstickers with citron sesame chili glaze

Baked Blue Corn Tortilla Chips with Wasabi Cheese Dip

Wasabi cheese, US Angus Beef bits, Tomato Salsa

Beef Miso Zuke

Marinated grilled US beef tenderloin lemon miso sauce

Chicken Katsu with Lemon Chili Sauce

Breaded chicken cutlets with citron onion sauce

Cream Dory Katsu with Honey Wasabi and Tonkatsu Sauce

Breaded cream dory fish with red cabbage salad

The tour ended on a high note as The Establishment was truly a banquet for the visual, gastronomy, and lounge encounter certainly like no other.  It is definitely changing the Manila scene and taking it to a whole new “global” level with impressive service, delectable cuisine offerings and massive sophisticated interiors.

Past Love Rekindled at Pasto

Previous to the discovery of Ristras, Pasto was frequent in the call log.  Bubba and I were reminiscing the other night how much we crave for Pasto before.  Pasto was our favorite go-to-restaurant for DVD food.  The Greenhills branch is rung ahead of time to order 2 batches of crostinis with chicken pate and pomodoro salsa dips.  Grab, pay and off to home movies.

I also like eating at home since Bubba finishes most of the salsa, so I have to replicate with a homemade one.  Diced tomatoes, diced red onions (nominal), fresh basil, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, (mmm-mm!) I can have as much as I want.  Soon, we were pairing our Pasto “to-go” order with Sandy’s Pizza’s buffalo wings, which we also got quite akin to.  Interestingly, we only order the wings (they deliver for 2 orders) and not the pizza.

Another favorite in Pasto is their Romano entrée (PHP345).  Romano is crusted chicken breast with spinach and roasted mushrooms in a Gorgonzola cream sauce served with fettuccine.

On the Table

Zuppa di Pomodoro PHP 95

Pasto has the best roasted-tomato cream soup in the Metro.  Its semi-smooth thickness is exactly right without making it appear like a tomato puree.  There’s a hint of Parmesan and cream taste in the roasted tomato soup. Garnished with fresh basil on top that adds a minty flavor perfect for that hot soothing spoonful.

Crostini, Pasto’s famous version of Italian crostini served with your choice of “dips.”  One order is equivalent to 8 pieces of crostini shaped like a pizza slice –thin, toasty and crispy.  Price of crostini depends on the dip.

Chicken pate PHP 125

Pomodoro Salsa PHP 105

En Route to the Perfect Bite

  1. Spread the chicken pate on the crostini
  2. Put a bit of the tomato salsa on top with a drip of the balsamic olive oil dressing

First layer of taste is good enough for me.

    3. Add another layer of flavor by adding grated Parmesan cheese.

    4. To add some heat, add the chili flakes

Before Ristras’ burritos and nacho chips, this was our comfort food.

Ortaggi PHP 225

Spaghetti cooked with artichokes, olives, sun-dried tomatoes, and feta cheese.  The usual order is Romano, Vongole or Frutti di Mare, but we took a detour and ordered a pasta dish we haven’t tried –Ortaggi.  It was a tad bit on the sweet side (probably from the sun-dried tomatoes which I really love) that I wasn’t expecting.  We only finished half of the pasta, partly because we needed to run off to watch GI Joe.

2 Italians in One Night

What do you do when you want to eat at two good restaurants in one night?  Have your favorite pasta from Cibo to go (since it’s always so full and noisy there) and dine at Pasto.  In my case, it was Pasta Dela Terra of Cibo.

At Pasto, order crostini pate, crostini salsa, Quattro Formagi and their Garlic Chicken with Linguini.
