Chef Jessie’s 100 Revolving Restaurant

Sometime early April, I finally found the chance to visit Chef Jessie’s 100 Revolving Restaurant. Chef Jessie Sinsioco of Le Souffle fame got me loving French Onion soup more than I would have and edified me with what a perfect soufflé is, whether savory or sweet. I also enjoyed visiting Top of the Citi and the Rockwell Club.

100 Revolving Restaurant, as the name connotes, is a 360-degree revolving fine dining restaurant that features Chef Jessie’s timeless signature dishes and a variety of international dishes including ones that highlight Filipino ingredients like Alugbati and Dulong. The 100 Revolving Restaurant’s menu offers continental classics as well as an international selection of sushi, salads, pastas and some Filipino-influenced dishes like adobo.

It’s located at the top of the MDC 100 building, where the 100 is supposedly the amount of pesos Mariano Que used as capital in starting the Mercury Drug business. 100 Revolving Restaurant is apparently not the first revolving restaurant in the country but is certainly the only one right now.

It gives a beautiful view of the Manila Bay and Laguna de Bay. At certain points, the view stretches to silhouettes of mountain ranges. It is ideal to visit right before sunset and stay until Manila plunges into darkness for a magnificent view of the Metro’s skyline. It’s been a dinner date venue of many proposals and engagement banquets.

It’s a huge restaurant where the carpeted circumferential area is where the floor is moving. When you get to the portion where there’s no view outside, you get a clear view of their vast kitchen which was also interesting to see.

Boqueria, Restaurante Chocolateria in Megamall

The target to hit was really Tim Ho Wan, on its official second day of operation, but the long queue drove me off to wander and check out other restaurants at the SM Mega Fashion Hall. My friend Nat was luckier since she was able to secure a table last Saturday around 4pm with only 20 minutes of wait. I’d probably wait when all the hype has died down or when they open their SM Mall of Asia (MOA) branch or when I fly off to Hong Kong again in a few months where I originally had it. Maybe I should check out their branch in Singapore when I go middle of June.

Boqueria is a Spanish restaurant con chocolateria that looked promising but had easily disappointed as soon as we got the menu. The restaurant’s interior was nice with the striking open kitchen being the focal point. Service could’ve been more inclined and friendlier.

We had to ask for the menu even if we have been sitting there for a good 5 minutes with them barely being 1/3 full. When the tall wait staff finally reached our table, I asked them for their specialty and what he can recommend to order. He grunted a few dishes. When I ordered an item he said, he then tells me that it’s not available.

I clarified a few items on the menu but he wasn’t keen on answering staring at an empty table instead. I gave up trying to figure out the best dishes to order and finally decided to just order what strikes my eye. I was on the 5th dish (3 tapas and two entrées) when I realized that he wasn’t listening to me. I asked him what he had listed down so far and he gave me only 2. I had to call him out for not paying any attention at all. He didn’t even apologize or tried to get the other order he missed since I only repeated one.

On the Prowl for Hungry Hound

 

Driving (or even sitting in the passenger seat while someone else drives) outside Greenhills or Ortigas area on a weekday is something I hardly liked when heavy traffic is anticipated. Unless you’re sitting in immovable traffic jam with the only and greatest love of your life, then “fuggedaboutit”! Life is too short to stare at car plates and bumpers for at least an hour just to get somewhere. And by the love of your life, I meant, that supreme food that comforts the very depth of your soul. You’ll have the greatest conversation ever.

Served on a big white mug with a crostini balancing the cherry tomato confit, there was a good contrast of cream, acidity, sweetness and zesty sharpness. Douse the crostini in the soup to soften it and let it soak the liquid or snap a bite right after a sip.

Crunchy seemingly garden-fresh vegetables bring the taste of spring to the table. We trust that the vinaigrette and yogurt are low-calorie dressing and it pulls all the ingredients together. The feta cheese and philo triangle adds a pleasant salty shade to the salad. It was a great side and balancer for the meat we ordered.

The tuna tartare was marinated but not cured enough to kill the fresh taste. I love the textures and the slight heat. Other than the scallion cream, the serving dish was dotted with red blotches of what I would guess as Sriracha sauce (Vietnamese hot sauce usually served with Pho).

Last March 5, the team trooped to Las Flores for dinner.  It was a birthday treat for me and Karen from dee boss.  We walked into Las Flores’ contemporary interiors with industrial-looking lamps and chandeliers and settled on our table.  I felt easy on the chair and ready for a relaxing dinner that awaits us.

I loved their salad a lot that when no one was getting anymore, I finished what was left off the bowl.  Dee boss wanted more and ordered another Ensalada Las Flores.  The greens were crispy, fresh tasting, the goat cheese giving that tangy slightly sharp yet mild taste.  Tomatoes and potatoes and caramelized apples provide a crunchy texture other than semi sweet elements to the starter.  One of the better salads in the Metro.

Arriba! Chihuahua Mexican Grill and Margarita Bar

Last August 11, 2011, I was still feeling quite tired from the 16-hour flight (which doesn’t include layover hours) I took the day before returning to Manila.  But no matter how tired the body is, the mind tummy is stronger.  That is why that very evening, I saw myself with Spanky and fellow foodies at the newest Mexican spot to hit the metro.

I’ve wanted to visit Chihuahua since it opened but barely found the time.  Mexican food is one of my top favorites that Bubba and I were willing to travel all the way to Pampanga to taste good Mexican cuisine.  I love the bright colors and the bright flavors that different tacos and burritos bring.  Chihuahua definitely did not disappoint.

Chihuahua is situated right across A. Venue along Makati Avenue and has started to create more noise for the area especially during its themed nights like Chips and Dale night and their Salsa nights.  Right at the helm of the party scene and Tex-Mex restaurant vibe are the couple Ines Cabarrus and Elian Habayeb of music and wine radio.

Restaurant is quite spacious for moving and bumping hips.  Walls are adorned with Mexican icons like Ricardo Montalban, which got me laughing hysterically because I finally saw his photo.  I have baptized my friend Richard of www.TalesfromtheTummy.com “Ricardo” a few months back and I’m trying to get everyone to call him that. Sexaaay eh?

While waiting for the others, we sipped a glass or two of Chihuarita –this is Chihuahua’s version of margarita.  It tastes so light and so good –just a lemony hint that’s not too acidic and right amount of sugar.  It gets you in a bubbly mood because the alcohol creeps in slow and soft but hits you right up.  I also love that the salt on the rim of the cups are spiced up for that extra kick.  Purrr-fect!

This starter gets the conversation going and going like an Energizer battery.  This was clearly a favorite on the table with a bowl of crunchy yellow chips cascaded with tasty chili beans, gooey guacamole, salsa of tomato and onion, jalapeno, 2 kinds of cheese and generous sour cream.  You shouldn’t miss ordering this when you’re at Chihuahua.

Chihuahua’s simple menu is on their red boards and it’s only 4 steps.  Step 1 is choosing between pork, steak, chicken or vegetarian. Step 2 is whether you’ll have your choice in a taco, burrito, burrito bowl or salad.  You can be done by Stage 2 but if you’re an eater like me, Step 3 will never be ignored.

Get Hooked at Fish and Co.

 

 

For a little woman, I am a big eater –and the emphasis there is on “little.”  That’s why I find the catch phrase “eat like a man!” a bit sexist.  I have a huge appetite more than three times a day, but that shouldn’t make me less of a woman. 

 

 

But I guess not all women are like me and that’s probably why Fish and Co. recently launched their Just For Me menu, differing from their usual family style servings.  Alongside your old favorites in personal size serving, Fish and Co. is also introducing new and exciting dishes to satiate the palate.

Baked Fish Napolitana PHP 265

Battered dory fillet baked with Napolitana sauce and mozzarella topped on buttered pasta.  The fish is what they handle best, as the restaurant name suggests, simple and straightforward with the way they cook the dory fillet.  Lightly battered fried to a golden crisp. 

 

 

Boneless Chicken Barbeque PHP 250

Chicken breast in honey barbeque sauce grilled to tenderness.  Served with seafood rice and sautéed vegetables.  Of note is the mighty impressive sweet smoky barbecue sauce that coats the chicken breast.  There’s additional barbecue sauce served on the side for people who like their sauces.

 

 

Bangus Ala Pobre PHP 265

Spiced milkfish strips topped with garlic sauce, served with seafood rice and sautéed vegetables.  This was another surefire hit on the table.  Garlic inflected brown sauce on top of semi-spicy milkfish, great partner of the seafood rice.

 

 

Beef and Eggplant Curry PHP 275

Aim for variety by ordering their beef and eggplant curry.  Beef strips and eggplant in green curry sauce and coconut cream topped over white rice.  The aroma is savory while the sauce has a zing of spice to it.

With the symphony of the tasty dishes on the table, gastronomic boredom is scratched off the book.  The new exciting dishes, new serving size, reasonably priced, it’s definitely hard not to get hooked.
