September 10, 2010 is a REGULAR Holiday

***UPDATE as of Sept. 3, 2010***

Malacanang has issued Proclamation No. 26 declaring Friday, September 10, 2010 as a Regular Holiday throughout the country to promote national consciousness on the religious and culutural significance of the Eid’l Fitr (Feast of Ramadhan).

In this regard, employees who will be assigned to work on this day will be given premium pay in accordance with their company’s existing policies.

Will there be a special non-working holiday this month of September?

We’re all anticipating President Noynoy’s announcement.

Last year, September 21, 2009 was declared as a national holiday by Malacañang in observance of Eid’l Fitr.

A lot are asking if September 10, 2010 (Friday) will be declared as a holiday.

Many opinions say it should be declared as one.  It’s like saying there’s no Christmas holiday.

If P-Noy/Malacañang does decide to announce it as a holiday, it would probably be declared by tomorrow or latest Sunday.

Holiday or not!

Take your family or your significant other

out on a date in the Metro (or just at the outskirts of it) 😉

Celebrate LIFE!

August 23, 2010 is no longer a non-working holiday

Malacañang announced yesterday that August 23, which falls on a Monday, will remain a regular working day, contrary to earlier declaration of it being a special non-working holiday under PGMA’s holiday economics.  P-Noy declared August 21, which is a Saturday and the actual date of Ninoy Aquino’s death anniversary, as the non-working holiday.

A statement from the presidential palace said President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III is empowered under Republic Act 9492 to modify holidays by law, order or proclamation.

“The purpose for observing Ninoy Aquino Day on August 21 instead of August 23 is to avoid the imposition of unnecessary financial burden upon the employers, ensure the continuity of government, business, and commercial transaction, promote productivity, while at the same time preserve the solemnity of the observance,” the statement read.

I feel for those of you who have already made vacation plans around this “supposedly” non-working holiday.  I guess the solution is either you cancel it or file a vacation leave from your respective companies (I know it’s a dent on your VL or paycheck but what can we do, it’s been decided on).  Anyway, August 30 is still a regular holiday at this time.  You might want to move your plans to that date 😀

And if you’re not skipping town… you might want to have a date in the Metro (or just at the outskirts of it) 😉

2010 Holidays Declared. Book That Vacation!

Time to pencil in the 2010 calendar your travel plans!

There were some debacles over President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s recent signing of Republic Act 9645 declaring July 27, 2009 and same date of the years that follow as a special national “working holiday” in recognition of the founding anniversary of Iglesia ni Cristo.  Everyone was baffled over PGMA’s move as some comments that there is no use signing that decree if it will be a working holiday anyway.  It’s only a special announcement that memorializes Iglesia ni Cristo day.  Another commenter on this blog said that if that’s the case then to be fair, PGMA should recognize other sects as well with their own special “working holiday,” which I see as a very good point.

Let’s not burst our bubble.  Here’s the list of 2010 declared holidays.

Regular Holidays 2010

1.        New Year’s Day (January 1)

2.        Maundy Thursday (April 1)

3.        Good Friday (April 2)

4.        Araw ng Kagitingan (April 9)

5.        Labor Day (May 1)

6.        Independence Day (June 14, Monday nearest June 12)

7.        National Heroes Day (August 30, last Monday of August)

8.        Bonifacio Day (November 29, Monday nearest November 30)

9.        Christmas Day (December 25, Saturday)

10.     Rizal Day (December 27, Monday nearest December 30).

Under Republic Act 9492, holidays, except those that are religious in nature, are moved to the nearest Monday unless otherwise modified by law, order or proclamation

.

Special Non-working Days

  1. Ninoy Aquino Day (August 23, Monday nearest Aug August 23)
  2. All Saints Day (Nov. 1, Monday), as well as December 24 and December 31, the last day of the year.

“In order to foster closer family ties and enable our countrymen to observe Christmas more meaningful, it is but fitting to declare December 24 as an additional special (non-working) day throughout the day,” Arroyo said in the proclamation.

The 1986 People Power Revolution anniversary (February 22, Monday nearest February 25) is declared as a special holiday for all schools.

The government will issue other proclamations declaring a national holiday for the observance of the Eid’l Fitr and Eid’l Adha, whose dates are determined based on the lunar calendar.

Another Holiday in the Philippines

It’s a Match: Pacquiao – Hatton on May 3

The May 3 bout between Filipino boxing champ Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and British slugger Ricky Hatton is very much anticipated by many boxing fans.  According to the promoters, the seats are all sold out even if there are still 10 days left prior to the match.

This supposedly 2nd to the last fight of Pacman will be held at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.  Have you bought your tickets?  In Manila, you can still catch the action via closed-circuit viewing at various restaurants, sports bars, and hotel lounges.

Promotion of the Pacman –Hatton event is co-handled by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank.  Top Rank’s Bob Arum expects this fight to overshoot existing pay-per-view records.

“Given that the live gate for this event is sold out, coupled with the sellout of tonight’s San Francisco Giants baseball game where Manny is the guest of honor, indicates to me that ‘The Battle of East and West’ is on track to break all existing pay-per-view records,” Arum said in a statement.

This bout highlights two of the best pound for pound fighters in the world today in the form of Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton.  Floyd Mayweather Senior, currently Hatton’s trainer, claims that Hatton will undoubtedly knock Pacman out.  On the blue corner, Pacman’s long time trainer, Freddie Roach, said in an interview that he will bet his house (one of the many probably) that Pacman will knock Hatton’s lights out.

This is going to be a very exciting fight since both great fighters are at the prime of their career.  Pacman has yet to face someone who is also at the peak of his boxing strength and skills.  Hatton’s form is exactly Manny’s form when he was starting out… that brawl sense of style.  Defense is a little loose while the punches are straightforward and onrushing.  Mexican boxers, Barerra, Marquez and Morales have reached their winning climax when Pacquiao met them as a young fresh blood.
