San Marino Premium Spanish Sardines

“Me athes una foto por favor.”  I asked my Spanish friend Merry to teach me some Spanish words to help me get by during my Spain trip during my most recent Spain trip.  Like, “La cuenta por favor” means you’re asking for the cheque.  “Tu ta bien?” means everything is good?  “Quanto cuesta” means how much, if you’re going around shopping.  More importantly, especially if you’re traveling alone, one thing you should know how to say is, “can you please take my photo?”

That Spain trip was truly memorable.  Other than it close to being an impulse, I was able to visit Barcelona, Madrid, Salamanca and Valladolid.  I even kind of crashed a traditional wedding in Salamanca.  There are many things to like about Spain.  Their food was really awesome, from tapas or their little plates of dishes to callos, bacalao, paella, pulpo con gallega, and my simplest yet yummy discovery there, pimientos de padron.  One thing though that really reminds me of Spain even when I was a young kid is what has become almost domestic to Filipinos, and part of our everyday consumption, is Spanish Sardines.

Vom Fass Artisan Specialty Store

Jars and canisters are some of the things I like purchasing, even the little versions of these as well.  Lately, I’ve been into airtight glass food storage jars that keep food fresh and mason jars that I can use for display, serving, vase or arts and crafts.  I love little jars particularly, especially when it stores artisanal products like aged balsamic vinegars or truffle oil.  For a foodie and trying hard to be a home cook like me, it’s like giving me a Tiffany box.

Sometime last year, I received a small 40ml jar that contains truffle oil.  I love anything truffle.

I asked where it came from and was told it was from Vom Fass.  Vom Fass recently opened at Shangri-la Plaza mall and offers an extraordinary line-up of single malt whiskeys, artisanal oils, vinegars, spirits, liqueurs, and other non-alcoholic specialties, all of which may be sampled ‘from the cask’ (which is what ‘Vom Fass’ means in English).

Mochiko Speculoos Cookie Butter

Way delayed post but I’m posting anyway.  After finishing bottles of Crunchy Cookie Butter with cold slices of pears, I still crave this wicked spread enjoined with other things.  Mochiko has made Speculoos Cookie Butter Mochi for me and everyone else who still can’t get over this nutty gingerbread spread.

Each mochi has Speculoos Cookie Butter ice cream, with cookie butter ripple, and a real Biscoff cookie inside.

Special Pancit Palabok, Lucky Me!

One of my favorite Lucky Me! memories was way back when I get to set foot back at home before the sun is down.  I remember late afternoons spent with my sisters trying to find the best snacks / merienda cena to share among the three of us.  4-5 packs of Lucky Me Pancit Canton were just right between three hungry tummies.  Joyce, Joanne and me never get tired of those flavorful noodles of IPC (instant pancit canton) since it’s very tasty, it tastes like stir fried noodles and it’s easy to cook.  Sometimes you can add tuna.  We heat some bread on the toaster and we’re good to go.

GoNuts Donuts Plus Cookie Butter Donuts

Crazy people are running wild online and offline ordering these jars of Speculoos Cookie Butter in the past months or since last quarter.  Pretty eyes Misty who was sweet enough to bring home a bottle for Madz and me to share (which I only had a spoonful or two of), brought home some from her family vacation in the US of A (thanks dear!).

Just last week, I was able to finally place a bottle of Speculoos Cookie Butter, the crunchy version, inside my pantry.  Side by side with it is Peanut Butter & Co.’s Crunch Time Peanut Butter.

Gonuts Donuts, Cookie Butter Donuts, CookieButterDonuts, sugar glazed, flavor, donut flavor, desserts, food, review, new, list, 2013, Gonuts Donuts branches, price, betweenbites, cookie butter, Philippines, supplier, where to order,

I have yet to open both bottles since I want to share it also.  It’s more fun eating with more people instead of alone… although I can already imagine myself huddled in one corner of the room barefoot with just these bottles, a spoon and some good steady music, wishing that moment helps me percolate some BRIGHT ideas inside this otherwise hollow shell I call a skull.

But until I have friends / people over, I’m practicing self-control.  Today, that didn’t work out pretty well when 2 boxes of Gonuts Donuts Plus arrived in my office.  I wouldn’t have peek at it if it didn’t bear the flavor right out front, “Cookie Butter Donuts.”  Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter???  Speculoos Cookie Butter?  Cookie Butter?  I couldn’t RESTRAIN myself.

Gonuts Donuts, Cookie Butter Donuts, CookieButterDonuts, sugar glazed, flavor, donut flavor, desserts, food, review, new, list, 2013, Gonuts Donuts branches, price, betweenbites

The handwritten note read,

“Dear Jane,

You definitely can’t just have one of these #CookieButterDonuts.”

That person has the gift of foresight because I didn’t stop at one.  I.  CAN’T.  HELP.  MYSELF.

I was initially skeptical thinking it’s only riding on the Speculoos bandwagon.  The donut was spectacularly scrumptious and deliciously and drunkenly sweet.  It’s the original sugar-glazed donut people were lining up for in Gonuts Donuts (when they started) topped GENEROUSLY with that brown lovely smooth goo that is Cookie Butter.  Rich but I devoured more than one.

Face the Changing Times with Olay Total Effects

Aah the ever changing wind, how are you swept by the wind?  They say life is a plethora of things we can and cannot remember.  I say, luckily for me, I try to write about the journeys I take as much as I can to help me remember, relive and share them.  What moments in your life have captured your memory?

Olay Philippines, Olay Total Effects, Olay review, Olay skin, Olay soap, Olay anti age, Olay Manila, Olay event, Olay White, Olay Facebook Page, review, blog, beauty blog, beauty blogger, price, grocery, how much, between bites, www.janedchua.com, Angel Aquino, Timeline, Celebrate your timeline, app, youthful glowing skin, Olay Total Effects price

In 2006, I joined a study tour in Japan sponsored by JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency).  At 24, I was one of the youngest at that time in the batch.  It was quite memorable since it was my first time to fly out of the country on my own, without family in tow.  It was also my first time to be away for a month from home.

I met a good friend there and she was already at her 30s then but she looked just like my age.  She’s always had this happy vibe and when she laughs her laughter is audible and infectious.  I see myself in her because I can relate to that cheery vibe, and I love laughing heartily. While I mistake her age, she tells me that I look younger than my age and looked like in my teens that time.

Moving from Osaka to Tokyo to Kagawa Prefecture and learning about the Japanese culture, their language, and meeting youth counterparts.  That time was also my first time to experience snow!  White specks of powdery ice.

Another memorable moment is when I jumped off Macau Tower in 2008.  I have the biggest fear of heights and closed spaces.  Yes, I am both acrophobic and claustrophobic. We initially figured we’ll just do a tandem “sky jump.”

Unfortunately for me, Bubba was overweight.  Yep, all the excess weight are all him.  *shakes head*  There was a maximum limit of what they can allow as tandem jump and we didn’t pass.

We had to do it solo.  I almost bailed out, disregarding the fact that I’m wasting xx amount of cash.  Finally, after summoning all the courage to jump, and taking reign of my fear, I… fell.  So technically, yes, I jumped off the Macau Tower, one of the tallest jump-off points in the whole wide world.  Woohoooooo!  Cue in *thundering applause right here*

Of recent times, I’d say being recognized for the passion and hard work I do in my corporate life is one of the more memorable moments for me.  Just last month, our company held its annual employee recognition event at the Dolphy Theater.

Nestle Fruit Yogurt with Jelly and Laughter Yoga Event (plus Contest Alerts!)

A few Saturdays ago, Nuffnang and Nestle Fruit Selection Yogurt with Jelly held a Laughter Yoga event at the Julius Maggi Kitchen of Nestle Rockwell.  The guests were welcomed by the event’s host Mike Unson, who is one of my two top favorite stand-up comedians in the country.  I used to catch Mike in Comedy Cartel gigs, mostly at the Spicy Fingers restaurant in Greenbelt 2 but he has come in full circle since his Comedy Cartel days and is now doing TV, radio and events hosting with his stand-up comedy acts.

As expected, Mike opened the floor with his jesting monologue that’s wittingly funny it got the crowd stirred with laughter.  The light-hearted entertainment continued, this time with a healthy twist when Mike turned over the floor to Paolo Martin Trinidad, a certified laughter yoga instructor –the one and only in the Philippines.

The person who got first quoted saying, “Laughter is the best medicine” knows exactly what he or she is talking about.  Paolo confirms that when done properly through right breathing techniques, laughter can actually help cure depression, facilitate blood circulation and assist in weight loss.  One of the breathing methods that the Laughter Yoga master taught is to inhale deeply through the nose and exhale longer through the same channel using your belly.  Smiling while doing this repetitively sends notes to the brain to be happy while oxygenizing your entire system.  Exhaling longer also gets rid of stale air that’s been trapped inside the body.

The Laughter Yoga session took away the inhibitions of the people inside the room and opened them up to proper breathing/laughing techniques.  Laughter in our lives is so vitally important mentally and equally nourishing physically when correctly performed to get the full benefits of it.  At the end of the session, I was feeling really tired and warm from the laughing exercises –but full in spirit, having communicated to my brain that I’m happy through the “act of laughing.”

After stretching out our laughing faculties, it was time to stretch out our tummies.  Refreshments of tasty snacks of pasta, fried wontons, sandwiches and tacos filled the table but the star of the show is the debut of the new Nestle Fruit Selection Yogurt with Jelly.

Personally, the new variant got me excited since I’m a true-blue fan of Nestle Fruit Yogurt.  I started buying it off grocery shelves in 2006 while I was on a diet and continued to consume it heartily even after my diet.  My all-time favorite of course is the 0% fat yogurt in strawberry flavor (if all fat free goods taste like this, we’d be happier people) but I’ve moved from one variant to another and have also fallen in love with their mixed berries.  Colleagues see my stock pile of Nestle Yogurt in the fridge and at certain times have asked me if they can get a “cup” from my stock for their after lunch dessert or for their afternoon munchies.

I’m one of the happy consumers of the brand for years now that’s why when I was approached, I was okay to write an open review about their newest product -Nestle Fruit Selection Yogurt with Jelly.  It is still the smooth and creamy yogurt everyone’s familiar with that the Nestle brand continues to deliver but half of that cup is filled with a new surprise –jelly.  Yes, that translucent gelatin we’ve all come to love growing up –and for some, candied jelly is still a choice of dessert or snack.  Put the two together and get introduced to the newest product of the NFSY line, Nestle Fruit Selection Yogurt with Jelly!  It’s definitely another first from Nestle.

If you’re a happy consumer of Nestle Fruit Selection Yogurt just like me,

Click Like on their Facebook Fan Page.

I got my first dibs of the yogurt with jelly or jello-gurt, as I would flippantly call it, at the Laughter Yoga event.  Observably, each person had their own take on how to eat this double treat.  Some cracked the soft jelly on top of the yogurt and actively mixed it with the yogurt blend at the bottom.  I took another route and gently spooned a bit of the jelly and savored its wobbly glassy texture.  My next bite consisted of a fragment of the jelly and a portion of the yogurt, tasting it together in a unifying sweet tart while enjoying the altering texture of the two components.

The jelly has a light fruity taste while the yogurt still holds its recognizable characteristic tang with traces of strawberry sweetness.  It is twice the surprise and twice the delight!  I wonder if the Buko Pandan variant tastes the same.  That’s what I’ll figure out in the coming days.

With the arrival of frozen yogurt specialty parlors that have sprouted like stray mushrooms in the Metro, I’m still partial to my off-the-shelf yogurt favorite that I can just pop open and enjoy.  It’s such a lip-smacking thrill to know that Nestle Fruit Selection Yogurt continues to create delicious new twist, in this case jellicious (jelly + delicious), to excite yogurt aficionados.

Capping Valentines Weekend with a Win

Last December, Between Bites, together with Minute Maid, hosted a contest on the site: Opening a Minute Maid: Experience the Natural Goodness.  There were two parts to that contest.  One would win the Blog section, while the other would win the Comment section.

Last February, right before Valentines weekend, Minute Maid has announced the Blog winner.  It was the entry of Kate who won.

http://meowbykate.blogspot.com/2010/01/time-for-orange-break.html

I requested Kate to share with us a few photos of her “prize” experience.

“I am actually quite embarrassed because there are no pictures of me.  I took pics of the room, the food we ate and the complimentary wine service.  I also took a thank you shot for Minute Maid.  Btw, we didn’t get to avail of the massage yet because it was scheduled the next day, meaning we would have checked out na.  We decided that we’d just save it for our 7th Anniversary this April 🙂

Anyway, thank you so much for hosting this contest 🙂  It was a really tiring week for us, since we came all the way from Clark and then drove to Makati to get the voucher.  The hotel stay plus wonderful breakfast buffet was a perfect way to end our Valentine’s weekend.”   ~Kate

Sharing Kate’s photos from her EDSA Shangri-la stay.  No photos though of Kate herself but she did take a “thank you” shot for Minute Maid.

Thank You Minute Maid!

Thanks Kate for joining the contest! 🙂  I hope you enjoyed your EDSA Shangri-la Chi Spa Holiday Package. 😀

Christian Homeschooler

A regular day for me starts with me fixing up breakfast for my boys and getting ready for homeschool. While I won’t have it any other way, it can still be tiring at times. Because the truth of the matter is, my day do not stop at homeschooling. I then have to prepare lunch and zero in on my online job thereafter. It can be crazy, I kid you not. Especially now that I have ventured into yet another online job, as a virtual assistant. This requires me to be glued to my office until the wee hours of the morning.

I’ll have to admit that it’s not always bright and shiny everyday. But I cannot be more thankful that I have discovered a partner that melts away my stress. Even during my “walang tulugan moments,” I’d find myself grabbing a bottle of Minute Maid Pulpy Orange. It somehow perks me up, switching me back to the timezone that I needed to be at a given moment. (Boss’ time zone is UTC-7 hours)

Minute Maid Pulpy Orange refreshes me at random parts of my ever packed days (and nights) — yes, even way after the hubby has gone to dreamland. =)

You just won The Spa package worth Php5,000.

Congratulations in winning the Comments category of the ‘Minute Maid Get Closer to Nature’ contest.

An acknowledgment email will be sent to you shortly on how to claim your prize.

Thank you to everyone who joined the Minute Maid contest.

Watch out for more exciting contests soon!!! 😉

For the meantime, the Ovi contest is ongoing.  Check that out!  🙂

You might be the lucky weekly winner!

*Kindly requesting both winners, if it ain’t such an inconvenience, to send me a photo of their “prize” experience so I can share it with the other readers.  Much appreciated!  Congrats!

Minute Maid Comment Winner Soon

I know, I know.  Waiting is an agony.  It’s been a while and the Blog winner has been announced weeks ago.  So what’s taking the delay?  Well, there are more Comment entries than the Blog entries for one –which the client has to evaluate thoroughly because there are just too many good entries that it’s really difficult to pick a winner.  I’m glad the decision is not in my shoulders since it’s really a tough call.

This is a short clip to update you that the client definitely hasn’t forgotten, but they are taking a bit more time in deciding.  Winners will be announced SOON.  Hold on to your seats!

Cheers! 🙂

And Good Luck Mates! 😉

Opening a Minute Maid: Experience the Natural Goodness

There are a multitude of things we enjoy about life.  The naked truth is… the biggest pleasure, most often that not, comes from the simplest things.  Simple.  Natural.  Fun.  Three words when mixed together in a moment can get me (or the Black Eyed Peas) singing, “I got a feeling… woo-hoo… that tonight’s gonna be a good night.”  In another breath, these words can easily improve your outlook and make you feel good.

For some people, fun means drinking beer and partying at events –but that doesn’t necessarily make you feel good all the time.  When I think about fun, I remember doing the thrilling Sky Jump at the Macau Tower.  That was some ultimate fun coupled with extreme adrenaline rush.  Trust me, nothing beats natural high.

And nothing beats natural pulp.

Thirsty?  Open a bottle of Minute Maid Pulpy Orange –it’s the simplest way to catch the natural goodness of my favorite fruit.  With Minute Maid Pulpy Orange, I enjoy the refreshing juice drink all year round.  Each plump pulp bits contain nature’s best and only Minute Maid Pulpy Orange can bring Nature’s goodness to me.

Preference always goes to the real pulp than a mock one like a real hug is always better than an icon hug in my mobile phone or instant messaging chats.

In fact, it’s the best.  If I can open a bottle of real hug when I need one, I definitely buy in boxes.  Nonetheless, I get much satisfaction in knowing that the next best thing to enjoying actual fruit juice, without having to pick and grind, is opening a bottle of real pulpy Minute Maid Pulpy Orange or Mango Orange.

How about you, when do you refresh with Minute Maid? 😉

Munchkyns Grapes and a Recipe from Rachel Ray

After a HK trip last September, Bubba’s dad brought home mini-grapes.

Around the same time, I chanced upon Rachel Ray’s recipe that is easy to prepare and posts as a different Hors d’oeuvres for house parties or Christmas gatherings.

Grapes with Proscuitto Cream Bites

Recipe:

Bunch large green or red seedless grapes, cut in half lengthwise

1 cup mascarpone cheese

1/4 pound sliced prosciutto, chopped

Freshly ground black pepper

Instruction:

In a bowl, combine the mascarpone with the prosciutto and season with some freshly ground black pepper.  Spoon or pipe a small amount of the prosciutto cream mixture onto the cut side of a grape and sandwich the cream with the other half of the grape. Continue until you have used up all the cream.

Sounds like yummy tapas!  I’m not sure if it will work with the mini-grapes but it can definitely work with regular seedless grapes found in the local supermarkets.

PHILIPPINES Under State of Calamity –President Gloria Arroyo

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has declared a State of Calamity in the whole country, extending the initial declaration that covers Metro Manila and several provinces.  Prices of goods should be at their current levels.

“For the reasons that we can’t estimate the effects of Typhoon Pepeng but which is expected to bring rains to many areas, and for the reasons that nobody would take advantage of prices, I’ve been authorized by the President to announce that the declaration of the state of calamity is being extended to the whole country,”  -Gilbert Teodoro, NDCC Chairman and Defense Secretary
