Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez in Manila on September 3, 2011… and their Part Three Rematch!

Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez will be making an appearance at the Quirino Grandstand this coming Saturday, September 3, 2011.  Solar All Access together with its free-to-air network partner will be staging the meet and greet event.  A mini press conference will probably follow to further promote the upcoming third match between Pacquiao and Marquez.  We all remember how the two matches were pretty close and one even at a draw.

Unfinished Business, Pacquiao v. Marquez Rematch

Fortunately for the Pacman fans, Manny Pacquiao isn’t the same boxer who struggled desperately with Marquez.  Grabbing many title belts after their last match and achieving the pound-for-pound throne, Pacquiao has matured and become one of the most successful fighters under Freddie Roach.  I think we already know where 95% of the bets will be placed.

New Philippine Bills, Money’s Face Value in the Philippines

In 2009, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) announced that it was planning a massive redesign of current banknotes and coins to further enhance security features and improve durability.  I caught a piece of this last night in the evening news.

Have you seen the latest Philippine bank notes?

Before your blood reaches 100 degree boiling point (or your face cracks laughing), these are NOT the new design of the Philippine bank notes.  I saw this somewhere and it’s not even close to what the new design is.

NEW Philippine Bank Notes

I like the newly released design for all the Philippine bills.  It kinda reminds me of Hong Kong money, where it looks clean and there’s a semi-white patch or fading color on one side.  I like also how it promotes beautiful and must-visit places in the Philippines instead of age-old buildings.  I wish that the material/paper is as smooth as Singapore money –which is less prone to soiling and the silkiness feels hygienic.

Anyway, I can’t wait to get a feel of the new Philippine Peso/Bills.

Bet Your Bottom Peso! 😉

I would like to congratulate all the winners and pray that they serve our country well.

We accept the will of the people.

I can’t wait to cast my vote in this upcoming national election.  I’m also excited for first time voters who got to register and will exercise their right to vote on May 10, 2010.

I wonder how the automated election will go.  I pray that whoever wins the presidency or the LGU seats, at the very least, it was really an honest election… with the right count and no tampering of the actual results.

Glutamax Unveils Its New Endorser in La Greta

Glutamax revealed its new endorser last Wednesday at the Eastwood Central Plaza.  Gretchen Barretto is now the new face of Glutamax, replacing Jinky Oda “Jacqui O.” who the brand originally launched with.  The TV ad campaign was also presented in the same event showing Gretchen taking off make-up, jewelry and pricey dress signifying that she shines without all of that only attributed to one reason… what she referred to as her “hidden wealth” –beautiful glowing skin (“Kutis Mayaman”).  That “hidden wealth” she mentioned is a sharp line to end the ad with, biting yet witty.

And according to her, what helps her maintain that beautiful white glow is Glutamax.  More of her interview during the event, she shares that she is very happy to be part of the new campaign and be part of the Glutamax family.

Before the big reveal, the first part of the event was the awarding of “The New Me” Blog Contest.  Jose Paul Legaspi, Healthwell president and CEO, partnered with Nuffnang (www.nuffnang.com), Asia Pacific’s biggest online community network company to stage this blog contest about “personal transformation”, which is part of their global promotional campaign for Glutamax.

Learning about the contest from the Nuffnang’s site, I joined with my “The New Me” entry.  Before they announced the winners, a string of wonderful music filled the event venue with Nyoy Volante, Julie Ann Santos (I’m not sure if I got the name right) and popular Filipino violinist Jon Lesaca taking the stage.  A segment of the program also showcased a slideshow of the contest participants flashing their “Before and After” photos in the wide screen.  Mojo and Suzie of Magic 89.9 hosted that evening’s Glutamax event.  Friends from the media were also present.

The esteemed Glutamax team went on stage and welcomed Gretchen Barretto to their family.  Jon Lesaca went back on stage and serenaded the new endorser at the pleasant request of the latter.

The night ended with a big buzz when Gretchen supposedly “walked out” of the mini-press conference that was held after the event.  The alleged “walk-out” happened after Gretchen was asked how she feels about her “Maalala Mo Kaya” back-to-back shows being pitted against Claudine’s show in the rival channel.  She vibrantly replied that she was extremely happy and proud that the Barrettos occupy that specific timeslot on Saturdays –implying that there’s more gain than loss for both sisters.  I think the media wasn’t satisfied with the answer and kept prying about how she really feels that made her storm out of the conference apparently with tears in her eyes.

2nd Prize: http://jonnieanzures.blogspot.com/2010/02/new-me.html

Until now writing about this, I have butterflies in my stomach remembering the moment they announced the first-prize winner.  I heard Mojo say Jane and say Chua and Sophie cheering and congratulating me… I think in my joy, I even hugged Sophie!  In my mind and heart, I felt like I did hug her (she was beside me) but I’m not really that sure now because everything felt like a blur.  I walked to the stage (shaking) and accepted the prize.  My mind was completely in pieces and when asked the question, I just stuttered my way through the answer –still in disbelief that I won the Mac Book.

Another highlight of the night for me was my bonding moment with Jed.  Jed is the cute, smart, and sweet son of Jeff and Jen Aspacio who was feeling bad because he thought I left without saying goodbye.  Bubba was so huge that he was covering Jed’s view.  I walked over to a pouting Jed.  I explained that I didn’t leave yet and I would of course say goodbye to him if I left.  I hugged him and said sorry.

He was quietly pouting for one whole minute… then he suddenly hugged me tight and broke down to tears saying he thought I already left.  After that, we talked about his favorite color and mine, butterfly kisses and his flat whistle and both of us left in a happy, beaming mood.

Thanks again Nuffnang for holding this contest and Glutamax for picking me as a winner.  I enjoyed writing the piece and I hope the entry truly inspired others take a step towards their own transformation –inside and out.

XOXO,

Janey

Earth Hour Forever?

***UPDATE*** Timbaland concert will supposedly start at 930 PM tonight to make way for Earth Hour.

It’s the time of the year again when we show Mother Earth that we still care.

It’s as simple as the flick of a switch.

The lights will go out for one hour on March 27 at 8:30 pm Manila time – wherever you live on planet earth.  It’s called Earth Hour – and it’s our best bet at stopping climate change.

But instead of just expressing your support tonight, you can show it the whole year by being more environment conscious and joining groups that help save the planet.  Manileños can start with helping revive the Pasig River.

Restoring Hope for the Nation: NoyNoy Aquino to Run for 2010 Presidency

Manila News Today: 09-09-09

Restoring Hope for the Nation

Sen. Benigno Aquino III, known to many as “NoyNoy”, the only son of former President Cory Aquino and national hero, Ninoy Aquino, officially announced this morning his acceptance of the people’s call for him to run for president in 2010.

Sen. Aquino made the announcement of his candidacy at the Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan City –the very same site where former President Aquino took her oath as president in 1986.  It was also the same venue where Sen. Mar Roxas held a press conference to announce that he is making the ultimate sacrifice to give way to Sen. Aquino. September 9, 2009, is also the 40th day after the death of his late mother, the icon of faith and democracy.

Sen. Aquino, who looked calm and strong-willed, declared that he is accepting the voice of the people and will continue his parents’ fight to restore “real” democracy in the country.  He accepts the challenge to lead in this fight by running in the coming elections.

NoyNoy’s sisters, Ballsy, Pinky, Viel and Kris along with their families were present during the announcement, a strong sign of their full pledge support for NoyNoy’s decision.

Liberal Party members Senators Manuel “Mar” Roxas II, Francis Pangilinan, former Sen. Franklin Drilon, Quezon Representative Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada III, former congressmen Florencio “Butch” Abad and Nereus Acosta, former Defense Secretary Avelino Cruz and Leah Navarro of the Black and White Movement were also present.

Sen. Aquino generously welcomed a few questions from the media, to which he answered fearlessly and with conviction.  He also mentioned that he has offered Sen. Roxas to be his vice-presidential running mate and is only awaiting the latter’s decision on the matter.  Other items he mentioned that he will look at is education and the repetitive traditional books we feed the youth, re-establishing the justice system across all classes (poking at the current justice structure for the rich and well-connected) and restoring hope for the nation.

Nike’s Manny Pacquiao Limited Apparel

Saturdays are meant for sleeping in until noon.  Not last Saturday though.  The day started early and we were at the Fort by 9AM. W-H-Y?

Last May 2, 2009, starting 12 noon, Manny Pacquiao fans and supporters get the chance to purchase Pacman’s limited apparel during this one day only event.  The most popular item in the Manny Pacquiao pop up store was the Nike Trainer 1, which retailed at PHP 5,209.

The Manny Pacquiao pop-up store one-off event was held at Magnet Café Bonifacio High Street.  Magnet Café is 2 doors away from the Nike branch store at the Fort.  Limited pairs were also made available at Nike Park BHS the next day.

What we were interested in was the Manny Pacquiao windbreaker that has the Philippine flag design.  When we got there though, there were about 80 people in line already, who supposedly camped out just to get their hands on the items.  3 hours of waiting… and there was no guarantee that when the store opens at 12nn, there would be stocks left.  As much as we wanted to purchase the windrunners, I just didn’t have the patience to wait that long.

Cheers to those who were able to buy what they went there for!!!  I’m green with envy.

The Real Deal: Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao Signs with ABS-CBN

Manny Pacquiao announces live on TV Patrol, Channel 2, Wednesday night that he has signed up with ABS-CBN Corporation for the exclusive coverage of his fight with Ricky Hatton on May 2, 2009 (Manila time).  In a bold move, Pacman surprises viewers with the announcement, having been exclusive under the Solar Entertainment banner for several years.  He is now back in being a “Kapamilya.”

Minutes after the announcement, Solar releases a statement through its lawyer on 24 Oras, which is the evening news show of network counterpart, GMA.  The lawyer, Enrique Dela Cruz Jr., intimated that Pacquiao does not have control to remove its contractual obligations from Solar and transfer telecast rights to ABS-CBN.  Solar holds a live contract that run until 2012 for exclusive broadcast rights over the Pacquiao fights across all platforms.  Solar Entertainment reiterated that the contract is still valid and binding and they continue to carry the legal right to air Pacman’s fights saying that Pacquiao or ABS-CBN cannot violate that legal agreement.

Unconfirmed reports say that other than the business deal that amounts anywhere between PHP 120 Million to PHP 180 Million per fight, another underlying factor that made Pacman switch is the media support he was going to get from ABS-CBN for his electoral campaign.  ABS-CBN is dominant and very visible in the Saranggani area.  Pacman is candidly considering running again for the same congressional seat in his province General Santos city, which he lost to incumbent Congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio.

Under the ABS-CBN deal, the next fights of Pacman will be aired over the giant network and not on GMA-7, which telecast the recent fights of the world’s pound for pound king.  Solar Entertainment partnered with GMA-7 for these past fights, giving them the free TV rights to air Pacman’s bouts.  Ironically, Pacman has 2 shows under GMA’s belt, Pinoy Records which he co-hosts with Chris Tiu and Totoy Bato, where he plays the trainer of Robin Padilla in the action series.

Rumors have been spreading since early this year that Solar’s ties with Pacquiao have been severed caused by non-payment of fees that Pacman’s camp should be collecting from Solar Sports.  Solar vice president for business operations Ralph Roy also have said to denounce two Inquirer exclusives, saying that the paper put the financial state of the company in a bad light.  The owners of Solar Sports and ABS-CBN met recently where the idea of buying out Pacquiao’s contract from Solar was initially considered.

If the case were true that Solar has been delinquent in its payment to Pacquiao then that can tantamount to breach of the agreement, which paves the route to pre-termination of the contract, provided this is one of the explicit termination effects of the agreement.

Hatton would probably set out to be Pacquiao’s biggest and most arduous fight in his career.  Ricky Hatton is one of the premiere boxers of today and he is at the peak of his game.  When Pacquiao fought with Mexican boxing giants, Barrera, Morales, Marquez, Dela Hoya, they were at the end of their prime.  Pacquiao is said to have met his match in Hatton.  However, Pacman predicts a win as he promises to bring honor to the country once again.  Speculation boils that the winner of Pacquiao versus Hatton bout is appointed to meet Mayweather in the next fight.

Pacquiao is set to retire after one or two more fights after Hatton.  One might be scheduled at the end of the year and another one for 2010.
