Scents of a Woman

Bubba surprised me one day, albeit not too smoothly, with a gift.  No occasion at all.  It was just a simple gift that illustrated his thoughtfulness.  I was giddy.  I read the box and it said Sarah Jessica Parker.  I can’t help cringing, as I am not best in hiding my feelings whatever it is, but properly said, “thank you” and hugged him.  Now, I have nothing against SJP and I like her (I don’t necessarily love her like girls who desperately and observably imitate her character, Carrie in Sex and the City) but I’m iffy about “celebrity” perfumes since most are eagerly produced without much thought and study.  They only let the celebrity’s name be the retail thrust.

I smelled it and initially thought it was strong and is more suitable for an age-bracket that’s older than mine.  It’s evocative of the words risky, mature, and bold.

After a few days though, I realized that the smell is milder than I initially thought.  It’s bordering girly and sexy, scent markings of chocolate, lavender and lemon.

Online it says that the notes include wet greens, geranium leaves, Sicilian lemon, lavender, chocolate, honeysuckle, magnolia, muguet, musk, vetiver, bois de cashmere, teakwood and amber.

It’s my favorite parfum at this time so Dolce and Gabbana’s Light Blue and DKNY’s Be Delicious Apple (which is my 2nd bottle, expensive at 4K plus) took a backseat.  Bubba really has excellent taste 😉  (Thanks again Bubbalicious!)

This is the second perfume I got from Bubba.  The first one was during our first Christmas together and it was Lacoste Touch of Pink –which I really really adored.

Some of the perfumes I loved through the years (which I at least had 4 bottles of) also include L’Eau Par Kenzo, Escada Sentiment, Estee Lauder Pleasures, Clinique Happy, Elizabeth Arden Green Tea, D&G Light Blue, Acqua de Gio, Ralph Lauren Polo Sport Women (which is the very least I like now –my favorite in HS but I guess my scent preference is different now).  I think there’s a handful more that I don’t quite remember at this exact moment but above are the ones I still won’t hesitate to use until now.

I’ve also used and pretty much like Gucci Ii Perfume, Tommy Hilfiger Dreaming (which might be the bottle I buy next), Jennifer Lopez’s Love at First Glow (only because it was on SALE in Japan when I bought, plus the cute pink bottle and charm attached to it!  It reminded me of the sexy bottle of Cool Water Women in HS.  Bubba hates the smell.)  I kept at least one empty bottle to remember my perfumes by but when Bubba laughed at how sentimental I was about them, I decided to throw it out last year in one of my “de-cluttering” moments (okay, honestly, it stayed for a few more weeks in our garage but the bag of empty perfume bottles was eventually thrown out).

I used to have at least 4 perfumes at a certain season but realized that it’s such a waste and the perfume vaporizes after some time so now I only keep one or two.

I think the very first perfume I used was my mom’s Christian Dior’s Pure Poison (eeps, I faint now) and when I was in grade school watching “combos” in hotel music lounges, I was akin to the singers’ perfume, which I later discovered as Farenheit (I faint again).  I also liked Perris Ellis when I was young.  I can only shake my head now.

There was a time (mostly in HS and Freshman College) I was more into men’s perfume and actually wore them instead of women’s.

In the recent years, the colognes I like in men include Armani Black, Acqua de Gio, Carolina Herrera 212, Hugo Boss 51, Tommy Hilfiger’s “Hilfiger.”

But of course, man or woman, nothing beats the natural scent of the skin right after a shower.

XOXO

My Mother’s Garden

Bubba and I celebrated our 3rd year anniversary Wednesday night, (02-10-2010).  I volunteered to think of our dinner destination but it was a stressful week at work this week so I just passed on the task to Bubba.  He was trying to keep it a mystery but when the car hit Zamora St. somewhere in Manila, he looked at me and knew that I knew where we were headed (his forever complaint is, it’s really hard to surprise me).  With a heavy sigh and a shaking head, he said, “I should write a book entitled, How to Date a Date Expert.”  I just laughed.

The 2650 gate opened to a discreet residence with a beautiful patch of garden.  There are some tables outside where one can enjoy summer dining.  We parked conveniently inside and walked towards the house.

A classic garden-type of setting across a serene Koi pond surrounded by lush greenery sets the stage for the dining ambience in My Mother’s Garden.  The vibe of the residence of National Artist for Architecture Pablo S. Antonio follows the same warm rustic charm as the outside.

The architectural buildings that Pablo S. Antonio created are displayed in framed photographs hanging on the wall.  Bubba pre-ordered so while waiting for them to serve the dishes, I gave Bubba my gift –the music video of his surprise party.  We played it on his laptop creating a bit of a noise (alternative song by Daughtry) in the otherwise tranquil place.

The place for me is reminiscent of the relaxed feeling of dining at Casa San Pablo in Laguna

How sweet huh, we can fit 3 more people between us 😉

(Oh, he brought me flowers)

 (Uhm… uhm… uhm… *vocalizing*)

Le Souffle Top of the Citi

Le Souffle-owned and operated, it has such a warm gentle ambience that highlights the beautiful Makati skyline.  The mood is relaxed and unhurried, even if it is located at one of the busiest buildings in the business district.  Smartly decorated in white and beige tones and with fresh flowers on the table.

On the Table

Bread and Butter (Free)

French Onion Soup PHP

I love soups and French Onion soup is one of the top favorites I order –especially if it’s coming from the kitchen of Le Souffle.  Slowly cooked onions in a semi-sweet (coming from the natural sugar of the onion) delicious broth, topped with crouton and generously smothered with cheese.

Charcoal Grilled Lamb Chops PHP 1,100

4 racks of perfectly seasoned and grilled lamb chops in garlic rosemary jus, accompanied by assorted vegetables and blanched spinach and mashed potato.

Duck Confit PHP 850

Duck confit in eschallot sauce, served the same as above, with vegetables.  Bubba found it a tad salty for his taste but since it’s duck and the meat was tender, he finished the plate including the crispy skin.

Service is top-notch by a professional staff who are knowledgeable about the dishes and see to it that everything runs smoothly.  Customer satisfaction is very important to them.  The dishes that Le Souffle concocts are still mighty impressive –almost never disappoints.

My Maddie

There is so much to say about my Maddie.

But I will keep it simple like she is.

We get each other’s jokes, talk about anything under the sun, and go to the wrong movie premieres together 😉

She is like a little sister to me.

Open about everything and shares every aspect of her heart to me.

You are blessed because you have a good heart

and a beauty that more than meets the eye.

I love your endearing smile, simple sweetness, and genuine care.

Thank you for being a part of my life.

You are a great friend.

A sit-down is a must to discuss our birthday outreach plans.

Basically, I just want a reason to see you

because it’s been more than 9 days since the last I saw you…

and my wacko self wants to see you everyday.

Experts Say Childhood is the Best Time for Success

Still think that time management only applies to adults and to the workplace? Well, parenting experts are asking you to think again.

Studies show 20% of the average workday is spent on ‘crucial’ and ‘important’ things, while 80% of the average workday is spent on things that have ‘little or no value.’ And Kelvin Ngo, Operations Manager of Kids Watch Central asserts that this could have been prevented – if only these adults were taught the discipline of time management early on. “If we don’t train them to have good habits while they are young, they will spend the rest of their lives trying to shake the bad ones.”

Ngo notes that while at first, being able to tell time guides kids on when to catch their favorite cartoon; they can apply the skill to more important things such as homework and eventually to work deadlines and client presentations.

So give your kids a head start on success — here are some easy steps you can follow in teaching them the value of time and the discipline of time management:

Be armed with the basics!

The Chinese adage of the longest journey starting with a single step is also true for teaching your kids—and in this case, you first have to make them grasp the concept of ‘time.’

“Time is an abstract concept,” observes Ngo “So to make it more ‘real’ for children especially, concrete time telling tools such as a wrist watch is a must.” Ngo notes that it would help if these timepieces are visually appealing or interesting to the kids themselves. “If their favorite character is Spiderman or Barbie of course, they’re likely to be more interested in looking at watches that feature these characters as opposed to a plain-faced one. It’s about adding an element of ‘fun’ to a visual representation of time.”

Kids Watch Central –a retail outlet that specializes in kid’s watches—for instance, is one place where parents can source trendy and colorful character timepieces. Here characters such as Transformers, Hello Kitty, Barbie and Ben10 come alive to teach children the value of time and the discipline of time management. Kids Watch Central outlets are located inside the Children’s Accessories of leading department stores.

Prioritize and optimize

Ngo shares that another important tip is to encourage children to categorize their tasks as either ‘Important’, ‘Urgent’ or ‘Both.’ Important means that the task needed considerable attention to detail or research before it could be completed, while Urgent meant that it’s due soon. The option ‘Both’ means that they have a great deal of work to do in a short time.

“The point of this exercise is to help children prioritize – if they themselves classify homework for tomorrow as ‘urgent’ or attending soccer practice as ‘important;’ then they can delegate their time and optimize their efforts accordingly.”

Experiment and Customize

The parenting expert notes that each child is different so in teaching them to manage their time, it’s also important to consider their temperament and personality.

“Some children need a break when getting home from school, while others lose steam if they don’t do their assignments right away,” observes Ngo. “Experiment with different times to do homework and see where you have the greatest success. Once the study time has been determined, create a consistent routine based on what works best for your child.”

The value of time and the discipline of management

“Time management is about self management,” says Ngo “Of course, children shouldn’t abandon their sense of fun or spontaneity; however, some basic planning strategies can help a lot. And it’s a skill that that can go a long way to help them achieve success when they grow up.

Kids Watch Central is located inside the Children’s Accessories area in leading department stores such as SM, The Landmark, and Rustan’s.

Melty Kiss Rum

My colleague and good friend KZ is back in town.  She was in Macau, Hong Kong and Shanghai for 2 weeks plus the company policy of 7-day quarantine made me miss her all the more.  Of course, she doesn’t miss the work.

She loved Shanghai.  She beat me to it.  I’ve always wanted to go.  I guess a trip to Beijing is first on the list, that being more a cultural trip.  But Shanghai is definitely the next stop in China.

KZ brought home a favorite of mine again, Meiji Melty Kiss.  A lot of people grope about how good Royce chocolates are (including me!) but it was Meiji that started my affection for Japanese chocolates.  The thin Meiji Black Chocolate bar was my first Japanese sweetheart.

It’s my first time to try Meiji Melty Kiss Rum and it is so sinfully good.  It reminded me of this blueberry-flavored melt-in-your-mouth-chocolates that I bought in Japan (I bought two bags of chocolates from Japan, cocoa addicts raise your hand!!!).  I didn’t realize rum could taste similar to blueberry.

Thanks KZ!

Dads

Chinese dads are rarely expressive.

My dad might have just said it once or twice but I know that he loves me dearly.

The time he spends with us are most treasured.

I love you pops!

Krispy Kreme Apple Cheesecake

Two weeks ago, I had a movie date in Greenhills Theater Mall with my Mama Mia and Bubba.  We watched Crank that stars Jason Statham and Amy Smart.  I cringed a lot during the movie because it showed a lot of brutality and nekkid ladies and I was sitting beside my mom.

Right after the movie, the Krispy Kreme light was still on and dear mother craved for some hot donuts.  She treated Bubba to a box of his choice donuts while we brought home a box.

Mother’s Day is around the corner.  It is in fact this coming Sunday, the week following the Pacman – Hitman bout.  One place I will surely head to is a Krispy Kreme outlet to get my mom a box of their lip smacking Apple Cheesecake Doughnuts.

Krispy Kreme fills the doughnut shells with tart, apple filling offset by a sugary drizzle of caramel and rich cream cheese icing.  The Apple Cheesecake indeed looks like a mini cake with fresh slivers of red and green apples decorating the top.

Whatever you give Mom on Mother’s Day, it’ll be a small compensation for everything that she’s done for you.

Splurge on something decadent, sweet and indulgent for the occasion that celebrates the sweet loving woman in your life.

Serve for breakfast-in-bed with a steaming cup of coffee to start her day right or stop by any Krispy Kreme branch and treat her to the indulgence of the new Apple Cheesecake doughnuts, paired with Krispy Kreme Signature Coffees.
