One Friday Afternoon in Anilao

Instead of doing the usual summer trip, we’ve decided to just chill and try to enjoy each other’s company over drinks, good food and music. Rented a boat for 4 hours at a rate of P22,000.

We left Ortigas around 930am that Friday and drove to Tagaytay to get brunch at Tootsie’s. After lunch, all 4 cars including Ray’s spanking new toy, Mini Cooper (which I wanted to try driving), headed to Acacia Resort in Anilao, Batangas.

Boon Tong Kee Philippines

The first time I tried Boon Tong Kee was in Singapore sometime 2010.  It started as a small chicken rice stall in Singapore’s Chinatown in 1979 and since then has grown into an international franchise with branches in the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia.  There are 7 successful branches in Singapore but the branch I dined at is their first full-service restaurant at Balestier Road, which opened as far back as 1983.

Relish Hello! Happiness Restaurant, Morato

Last year, I suggested Lola’s Café to the SOLA gang to celebrate Isis’ birthday.  They were pretty happy about the homey ambience in the traditional house-cum-restaurant and generally with the food.  After a couple of months, they discovered another restaurant with a homey ambience in the Morato area and kept insisting to bring me there.

They were all telling me how it reminds me of my own living room at home mostly decked in white motif and neutral colors with minimal color accents.  After our Christmas outreach, we wanted to grab a late lunch somewhere in Quezon City and finally ended up at Relish.  The porch which serves to be the waiting area when the dining room is packed looks like a modern living room with lots of lamps and modish accents.  I actually saw two pillows that were exactly the same as mine.

Lola’s Café, Tomas Morato

The car turned left to the street where Uno restaurant is located.  It was supposed to be our destination for a quick dinner before poker night with the group, until he mentioned that there’s a good restaurant also near the area that he used to go to, pointing somewhere at the next corner.  And as soon as he said the word, “Lola”, I immediately chimed in “Lola’s Café!”

My excitement escaped me and that was enough for him to drive pass Uno and take a detour.  I heard about Lola’s Café from Eugene of heftyfoodies when we were at the Best of the Beast dinner and it’s been on my hit list since.  Invited my friend Eric to check the place out 2 weeks ago but since he had an ER at work, we had to explore dinner somewhere nearer Ortigas.

Ken and I walked in without any reservations but the place was fully booked that Friday evening.  We pled to just grab a 30-minute dinner since we’re in a hurry to meet the group right after.  They obliged and gave us one table.  Lola’s Café is an ancestral home converted to a homey restaurant.  The mainly white-and-black-hued dining area is split into three, an al fresco veranda, the lower floor and the 2nd floor.  Going up the stairs, I noticed the wall studded with quirky frames of ingredients, words and travel!  I also love their big drop lights using bottle jars.

The interiors were simple and modish, minimalist with interesting elements of quirkiness and style.  Just the way I designed my own place, leaning on a lot of clean relaxing white and decked with personality, travel and fun.

The Best of the Beast Dinner at Elbert’s Steak Room

Before we scratched June off the calendar, the last day of the 1st half of the year was celebrated with beasty pride.  PTR caught the announcement of the collaboration between the beloved blog Table for Three, Please and Chef Albert Cuenca and invited me to try out what they dubbed as The Best of the Beast dinner.

Good thing it fell on a Sunday, otherwise I wouldn’t have driven to Makati any other day.  We gathered with weighty anticipation at the elegant meat mecca called Elbert’s Steak Room.

PTR and I sat at a long table with other meat lovers and met new friends, while bumping into foodie friends, Eugene and Mitch.  Sanju was there and we were exchanging notes on the newest restaurant discoveries, the hits and misses, our recent favorites, which ended up in pinning a date to try Sensei somewhere Southbound.

Jellied Aji Tamago

The beef-centric degustation started with marinated soft boiled egg (also found being served at Yushoken Ramen) delicately cuddled by a jelly encasing that has a light soy and mirin taste.  I love soft boiled eggs as much as I love poached eggs and this aji tamago opens my penchant wide with its yolky vulnerability.

Hillside Ranch, In the Meat of the Moment

I stepped into Trellis restaurant last Thursday and walked into a restaurant that’s older than me. Trellis has opened its doors to clients since 1980.  That evening saw me and the foodie bunch led by Spanky, hovering around the corner where the carving station is.  Spotlight was on two celebrities breaking into the scene, who did their cameo at the Salcedo Market and during the Ultimate Taste Test.

Trellis has that easy atmosphere making it a steady place to dine and chill.  The acoustic band was terrific crooning Dave Matthews Band and Bob Marley songs.  Trellis famous for its pork sisig let this sizzling dish make its carpet entrance and it’s visible on almost every table at the restaurant filled with drinking corporate folks.

However, the real stars were the Beef Belly and the Corned Beef Brisket during dinner time and I was so stunned I almost asked for an autograph.  Guess who’s the management behind the talent?  The brand Hillside Ranch.

Hillside Ranch began when the young husband and wife tandem, Atoy and Chay Tayag of Angeles City, Pampanga, decided to finally put their years of expertise into meat entrées that rival what restaurants can dish out of their kitchen, but theirs make gourmet meats available right at the comfort of your home.

“Atoy’s family owns a meat processing business called Mother Earth, which make beef franks, tocino, longganisa, and sisig,” shares Chay, whose family runs the Kapampangan restaurant, Binulo while she manages the catering arm of an American restaurant, Rumpa.

Hillside Ranch is uniquely suited to the challenges of serving restaurant-quality food straight from the freezer and making it as delectable for home consumption without compromising its quality.  Hillside Ranch only uses USDA beef for that premium consistency and only specific cuts to be able to withstand reheating process whether pan fried or via microwave.

The Beef Belly was unveiled in its full glistening glory, studded with pepper in that beautifully cooked brown color.  The knife swiftly cuts into the meat with barely any pressure and tenderly limps on the plate.  Sharing the limelight are side dishes of Garlic Rice and Polenta.

It’s a stunning meat that can get me squealing in delight, minus a shot of Johnnie Walker’s Black Label –my first time to try it in my life.  It got me to shut up the whole night with Spanky teasing I’m too anti-social.  I couldn’t tell if it was Johnnie that got me standing crookedly or my knees buckled in sheer enthusiasm over the mouthwatering meats laid in front of me.  I kept stuffing my mouth with the sandwiches and the meats without a care that I’m slowly growing an inch or two on my belly… a happy belly at that… and every pun intended.

Follow the Road to the Yellow Chicken at Wee Nam Kee

Remember that Last Song Syndrome (LSS) after watching The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, one which Dorothy kept singing as she used it as a guideline to lead her to Emerald City.  Follow the Yellow Brick Road?  Well, my version lately is Follow the Yellow Chick Road.

Wee Nam Kee, Wee Nam Kee Chicken. Hainanese Chicken. Best hainanese, chicken rice set, Philippines, Metro Manila, food blog, foodie, Yellow Chicken, Yellow Chicken festival, Yellow Chicken Wagyu, wagyu of chicken, Wee Nam Kee menu, Wee Nam Kee price, Wee Nam Kee branches, Name Kee, Filipino, Pinoy, food blogger, travel, review, dinner date, Singapore, Singaporean restaurant, local, branches, location, menu, price, venue, photo, roasted chicken, steamed chicken, ginger, chili crab, best, lifestyle blog, between bites, betweenbites, janedchua.com, Yellow Chicken price, best Chinese, restaurant, restaurant review, new, list, 2013

After Anti-Gravity Yoga class at Beyond Yoga BHS Central, Isis and I walked the road that led to Wee Nam Kee, where we anticipated finding an emerald of a dish.  The imported Yellow Chicken, deemed as the Wagyu of Chicken, that can get anyone fixed on a new high with Hainanese Chicken Rice.

I find myself back in the modern and clean interiors of Wee Nam Kee but this time, at their Serendra branch.  From entering Manila shores some 2 years ago, the restaurant has already expanded to 6 branches.  There are only two branches that serve the highly acclaimed Yellow Chicken, Wee Nam Kee Serendra and Glorietta branches.  For something as good as this, it has every right to be a bit elusive.

Wee Nam Kee, A Slice of Singapore

The restaurant’s interiors give off a clean-cut contemporary feel with beautiful bird cage drop lights, but more than the comfortable setting to bring family or close friends to, it is what’s placed on the table that’s the main highlight and loyal patrons keep coming back for.  On a late Sunday lunch, the place was packed.

On the Table

Chili Crabs with Fried Mantou Bread (4pcs) – Price varies on weight

Wee Nam Kee has an extensive menu but we had to stick with its house specialties like their Singaporean Chili Crab and Cereal Prawns to accompany what we targeted for that day – Yellow Chicken.

Isis had her eyes set on this dish as soon as she opened the menu and even if I had crabs the day before, I did not back down.  Wee Nam Kee serves a mean Chili Crab dish that has all that sweet spicy mixture of garlic, shallots, sesame sauce, ginger, oyster sauce, tomato and of course chili sauce that I don’t mind getting my hands dirty on.

By now, you know the drill, soak up the chili crab sauce with the fried mantou bread and if there’s a drop on your plate, mop it off and place it in your mouth.

No wasting that red sticky goodness that strikes just the right punch of sweet and spicy.  I also love that the good-size crab had hefty meat inside that’s not overcooked but tender and still retained its integrity.  I could finish heaps of white rice with this or a basketful of fried mantou.

Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen

Although stores and shops are still sparse in the newly opened East Wing of Shangri-la Mall, its food landscape is starting to shape up.  The well-lit spanking new hallways of the mall can easily usher you to check out the line of new restaurants.  I’ve tried two in this part of Shang and another one last Sunday after attending the 4pm Service taking on an unscheduled dinner invite.

 Wrong Ramen Makes it Right

Nomama Artisan Ramen

Kichitora of Tokyo

After scouring 2 levels and eliminating Shabu Shabu, Sushi and Filipino restaurants, we finally settled to have something light and not heavy that evening.  Ramen was the choice and I was sort of craving for it.  That brings us to the door of Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen, which had a line outside.  Good thing we just needed a table for two and there was one ready for us.

Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen, East Wing, Shangrila Mall, Shangri-la Mall, New, new restaurants, list, Metro Manila, Philippines, Mandaluyong City, Quezon City restaurants, ramen place, best ramen in Manila, Japanese, Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen menu, photo, Pinoy, Filipino, Mall restaurants, Santouka Ramen, Glorietta, battle of ramen, ramen craze, best Ramen restaurant, Fukuokka, Shang, price, dinner date, interior, food review, between bites, food blog, lifestyle blog, janedchua.com, foodie

The interior of Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen is quite an eyeful, heavily designed with wood panels marked with Japanese characters.  I don’t know if space-functionality is compromised but it certainly gives a bona fide Japanese feel with all the lighting fixture and wood element.

Specializing in Ramen, the menu is quite limited but centers mainly on ramen offerings.   Soup flavors come in different categories mainly: shio ramen (salt flavored soup), shoyu ramen (soy sauce flavored soup), tonkotsu ramen (pork bone based creamy soup), and miso ramen (miso flavored soup).

On the Table

Gyoza P150

6 pieces of Japanese potstickers, a great starter or side dish for the bowls of ramen.  Bite into the tasty dumpling filled with minced pork and chives, dip lightly in the gyoza sauce it comes with and pop the whole thing in your mouth and enjoy the outside crunch intermingled with the soft filling inside.

Miso Tonkotsu P380

Tonkotsu-based soup with very rich pork broth specially blended with quality miso paste.  It comes with green onion, bamboo shoots and 2 slices of pork chasu.  I smell the waft coming from the bowl and I know I am in for a treat.  The warm broth was comforting yet had spikes of unexpectedness, like it is familiar but I am still surprised.

The bamboo shoots add a crunch while the half / soft boiled egg (P50) I ordered on the side attached softness and some creaminess.  The slice of roasted pork is tender but lacked the taste of roast but the flavorful orange broth brings everything in.

Ignite Your Cravings at Bonfire

I follow a trail of crumbs of my favorite comfort dishes and it doesn’t lead me to a ginger bread house but to a Bonfire amidst a concrete jungle.  A bonfire is where family and friends huddle around a blazing fire just hanging out over great music, storytelling, bonding or some fire-roasted marshmallows.  Last Thursday evening, that’s exactly the mood set for dinner.  Casual, fun, and sharing a great meal.  And yes, there were s’mores too!

Between Bites, food, foodie, Bonfire, Bonfire menu, Bonfire location, map, how to get there, direction, new restaurants 2013, list, review, food blog, blogger, Bonfire food review, Bonfire prices, Bon Fire, Greenhills Town Center, 2013 new restaurants, dinner date, best, Philippines, Manila, San Juan, Quezon City, Makati, best dinner dates, Bonfire prices, Bonfire bestsellers, comfort food, Metro Manila

The interiors are warm and casual – great for family or barkada bonding with some great beats on the background that can get you jiggy-ing (so Fresh Prince haha) on your seat or spontaneous dancing on the floor.  At Bonfire, food is promised to be always fresh and straightforward.  There’s no one theme for the cuisine here as you can find most, if not all, of your comfort food here… from juicy steaks to fall off the bone baby back ribs, to sausage pizzas and shrimp pastas, or even to gooey chocolate smores and root beer floats.

On the Table

Shrimp, Mango and Alfalfa Salad P185

Fresh and light salad with mango slices and shrimp – this was my appetizer and it was a good starter.  I also tried GSM’s salad, Pomelo Mojito Salad (P185) and it’s also a refreshing salad but interestingly with that minty dressing reminiscent of a mojito cocktail!

Damaso Residencia, A Private Kitchen by Chef Bambi Sy Gobio

Last August, Bubba and I headed out to hunt down a Swiss chalet-type of house somewhere in Greenhills.  If you pay attention closely right after La Salle Greenhills, the red roof and green shutters are hard to miss despite the tall brown gate.

Bubba and I arrived first ahead of the others and were welcomed to a waiting-slash-reading room that looked like it was a setting taken out of the movie, “The King’s Speech.”

It felt so English except that the server asked what drinks we wanted and asked politely if we’d like to try their Tubig ni Maria.  Curiosity didn’t kill the foodie and we found out that it is actually cucumber water lazed with ginger and lemon.  I obliged since I barely drink colas or anything else –it’s an interesting take which still retained the purity and lightness of water.

If you’re familiar with Restaurante Pia Y Damaso, the restaurant that started that whole theme of Spanish-Filipino era from interiors to menu, the original concept was from Chef Bambi Sy Gobio.  The Damaso restaurant in Greenbelt 5 took Filipino cuisine to a new light with her at the helm.  Chef Bambi further opens your palate with scrumptious dishes taken from her family recipes at her lovely home.  Damaso Residencia, is the newest private kitchen to open its doors to discerning foodies.

If you are celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, family occasions and in need of a venue for group gatherings, Damaso Residencia is a good option to hold a private dinner at.  That evening, the spread was centered on Chef Bambi’s famous Roasted Turkey with Chorizo Stuffing.

The guests started piling up in the sitting room.  The air was busy with talks of latest food discoveries while everyone munched on bite-size corn muffins and chicken skin served on a tier of silver platter.

After a short while, we gathered inside the dining area which was an elegant setting fit for a happy family ready to partake in a feast.

On the Table

Split Pea Soup

The warm soup of split pea felt comforting since it was raining that day.  It’s in the shade of greyish green color that has a grainy composition that gives it texture.

Baked Fish

Of course, the roasted turkey is but lonely with the accompaniment of other viands like the baked fish.  The sauce was delicious and combines ingredients of lemon, wine, caramelized onions, garlic and tomatoes.

Creamy Mashed Potato

Smooth smashed potato perfect alternative starch for “trying hard non-rice eaters” like me.  The no-rice diet like most of my diets only lasted a day.

Roasted Turkey with Chorizo Stuffing

The star of the show comes out eliciting hushed enthusiasm from the crowd.  It’s fairly-sized for our party’s number but Chef Gobio has bigger turkey sizes for bigger groups.  After giving the turkey dirty looks, and snapping shots for food pornography, the server then starts to willfully glide the sharp knife across the breast part for easy serving.

He also places the chorizo stuffing and other vegetables neatly on the serving plate.  With the hefty weight, turkey has the tendency to be dry, but these thinly sliced turkey meat were incredibly moist and tender than expected.

Cochinillo Asado, A New Discovery at 22 Prime, Discovery Suites

22 PRIME always had a soft spot in my heart.  Bubba and I find random refuge at the restaurant located at Discovery Suites’ 22nd floor after a long day at work.  Having occupied the Number 1 post on my Between Bites’ Best Date Places in 2010, it’s no secret that I like going here for dinners and even cocktails at Serendipity Lounge.  Listed among the top five Philippine restaurants by the international Miele Guide on its 2011-2012 Edition, it confirms that my taste is not far from theirs.

During Spot.Ph’s Goldspot Awards, 22 Prime was also awarded as the city’s best steak specialty restaurant.

Between Bites TOP 10 MUST BITES 2011

I have scoffed, gobbled, munched, wolfed down different dishes in many, almost countless, restaurants that I have to really organize my food thoughts.  That is the reason time and again I come up with these Between Bites Top 10 lists.

10. Rub Ribs and Barbecue

A simple duplex with a red signage that spelled RUB stands in Tomas Morato.  With more comfortable dining area on the 2nd floor, the small space has quotable quotes in frames adorning the wall.  Their menu offers wings, potato wedges, pastas, pork belly, among others but obviously, it is a no-nonsense restaurant devoted to the love of ribs and barbecue.

Best Valentine’s Day 2011 Guide to Hearty Celebration

Last year, this site posted a Between Bites TOP 10 Best Date Places of 2010, which will have its counterpart for 2011.  You can check the post for suggestions on where to go for dates, romantic or otherwise.  My gut feel though tells me that these places are already fully booked at this time.  It wouldn’t hurt to check if a reservation got canceled.

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and for busy people like me, who juggles time between managing family responsibilities, work, side projects and friends and does not have time to plan ahead for Heart’s Day this year, below is a list of places you might want to check out.

Between Bites TOP 10 Valentine’s Day Places 2011

1. La Cocina de Tita Moning

I haven’t blogged about La Cocina de Tita Moning because it sits atop mounds of blog backlogs (I think my count is nearly 30).  Anyway, suffice to say that it is truly an experience dining at this ancestral house that shares a lot of history about the Legarda-Prieto-Valdes clan.  Ancestral houses would sometimes give off the eerie vibe but there’s something quite romantic about the dining area of La Cocina de Tita Moning.

And the dishes in their set menus are outstanding.  Must haves include Paella Valenciana, Lengua, Slowly Roasted Pork and my favorite is La Cocina’s Gazpacho with fresh crab salad!  More on that when I get my post up!

2. Lola Maria’s Restaurant at Legend of Villas

If you don’t want to travel far and wants something accessible within the Metro, Lola Maria’s is a gem waiting to be discovered.  Amidst the urban landscape stands The Legend Villas, almost hidden behind high-rise corporate buildings in Pioneer Street.  Walk through the gates of Legend of Villas and get allured by an old world setting.

Cocido!! 🙂

This 2011, Lola Maria Restaurant welcomes eight new delectable dishes created by Chef Michael Martinez in consultation with some celebrated personalities.  I suggest you don’t miss out ordering the Cocido, the Garlic Rosemary Rib-eye and the Ensaymada Soufflé.

3. Hot-Air Balloon Festival

If you want to spend Valentines outside Metro Manila, then take a short drive to Clarkfield, Pampanga on February 12 or 13 where the Hot-Air Balloon Festival is happening.  Bubba and I have been going to the Hot-Air Balloon Fest since 2007 for 3 straight years and only missed last year’s.

There’s nothing like a short drive countryside that can keep the bond alive.  Sound tripping, singing out loud, talking, green scenery and a breath of fresh air might just refresh the bond between couples.

Spending Valentines weekend with friends on a road trip is the best!

While you’re in Pampanga, have a hearty lunch at an authentic Mexican restaurant called Zapata’s.

4. Speed-dating

February is not only for those who are “in-love” but it is also for those who are “in-love” with the idea of “LOVE.”  It’s considered also as the Singles Awareness month.

A lot of speed-dating events are set-up this month.  If you’re out on a hunt for “the one” (even just for fun), there’s a speed-dating event on February 11 and 12, 2011 at Focaccia Fort Strip.  It’s an event organized by Perfect Events dubbed as “It’s a Date.”

What: “It’s a Date” Speed-Dating

Where: Focaccia, Fort Strip

When: February 11/12, 8pm-11pm

Ticket Price: PHP 900 (inclusive of dinner)

Other than enlarging your network, or the chance of meeting someone special, you can also win these awesome prizes: an overnight stay in Boracay, Attivo dinner date for two, or free make-over from Azta Salon!

5. My Mother’s Garden

My Mother’s Garden is located in a discreet residential place somewhere in Pasay City.  My Mother’s Garden accepts private dining amidst a beautiful patch of garden.  If you want to stay out of the commercial places that jack up their prices every Valentine’s Day, then Mother’s Garden is the place for you.

Simple, with a much quieter ambience than regular date places, Mother’s Garden serves gourmet home-cooked meals.

6. Las Filipinas de Acuzar Resort

If you want to skip town and go somewhere farther, minus the beach or heavy traffic in the south area, take the 2-hour drive to Bagac, Bataan.  Go up Mount Samat and check the huge White Cross that gives you a view of the whole of Bataan.

Check-in at Las Filipinas de Acuzar Resort and get enthralled in this little town of reconstructed ancestral houses that made me feel like I was taking a walk during the Spanish era.

Get a traditional hilot/massage at the Marahai Spa, located at the Indio House or Wooden Stilt Houses near the beach area.

7. Marcia Adam’s Tuscany

Tagaytay has always been almost a fool-proof place to go to when looking for a quiet date place.  With the cool breeze and close-to-nature atmosphere, driving to Tagaytay remains to be an option for couples seeking out solitude from the Metro.  One place worthwhile to visit is Marcia Adam’s Tuscany

The Girl by the Window

This particular garden restaurant displays a lot of Tuscan character, light and airy like a sunflower –it’s probably one of the brighter spots which the sun favors in Tagaytay.

8. L’Opera

Bubba has been harping about L’Opera’s Tagliata di Manzo con Fegato D’oca in Salsa Tartufata con Spinaci e Asparagus since December and hinted that he wants to have dinner there.  I guess that’s where I’m taking him for a Valentines dinner.

9. Yacht Cruise

I’m not a big Valentine’s person because I find it a bit cheesy and too commercialized already.  But as mentioned before, it doesn’t stop me from showing Bubba that I can look beyond the cheesiness and celebrate it with him.  This dinner on a yacht cruise was my surprise to him in 2008.

Since then a lot of people have been doing the yacht cruise dinner but if you haven’t experienced it, it’s worth a look.  Just make sure you bring Bonamin if you or your partner is prone to seasickness.

10. Abbondanza Pizza

Simple, Cheap, Heart-y, and Yummy.  I can simply be happy with a heart-shaped Abbondanza Pizza, chili olive oil and parmesan cheese.  Simple evening with no worries.  A good DVD to watch…  and a lot of cuddling.  Bow.

Where are you taking your Valentine? 😉

Between Bites TOP 10 BEST DATE PLACES

10. Vieux Chalet

A lonely artistic candleholder by the window greeted us as we enter the resto-house named Vieux Chalet. One area had an unfinished window. We dined that night in a rustic atmosphere atop of Metro Manila, a place where a pool of lights is swimming in front of your eyes. Antipolo.

Must order starters include the Raclette and Rosti.

Raclette PHP185

Rico, who was our table attendant that night, discouraged us in ordering the Raclette since the smell might turn us off.  Little did he know, we are fans of any cheese –even the stinky stinky I’m going to barf with that smell -kind. On the white plate was melted Swiss cheese garnished with 2 olives, half-boiled potato, and a few pickles. The potato was sweet. The cheese was seasoned with paprika. We loved the sharp flavor of the cheese, which was enhanced by the odor. Smell really affects flavor. The pickle was juicy and sour as expected and a good contrast to the salt of the cheese. The olive, not falling behind, served its purpose in harmonizing the two flavors.

10. Lunch and the Afternoon at Lake Pandin

If you can afford to drive much farther than Antipolo, it’s also great to have a simple “back to the roots” lunch at Lake Pandin in Laguna.

I was taken by the calming beauty of Pandin Lake.  The sun was out but we didn’t feel the heat –just the cool wind whispering softly in our ears.  We had the view of the lush greens that relax the eyees.

Lunch was simple but tastes good.  We loved the little shrimps in coconut milk (gata) and the tilapia.

After lunch, Bubba and I relished the calmness of the scenery and stillness of time.  We look out at the “docking port” where we came from and felt so on our own.  Our minds were very relaxed… while my body was such in a tranquil moment.

You can opt to take the ride at PHP 180 and with lunch, an additional PHP 180.  We enjoyed the afternoon so much that Bubba gave PHP 500 as extra.  If you plan to visit and you enjoy it tremendously, please feel free to leave an extra for the community locals.  They earn here through integrity and hard work that it’s so easy to give from the heart.

Bubba and I shared varying moments here.  There were moments we talked.  Moments we took photos.  Moments we look out to the world… …even moments where we each had our own thoughts, devoid of the other’s presence.

Being enclosed in the rural surroundings is a humble reminder that life started out simple.  And in simplicity, we are in touch more with our inner selves.

9. Van Gogh is Bipolar

This will probably be your most unusual date place.  But it will definitely be memorable.

There is a sign on the door that says, “Welcome!  Please remove your shoes.  Thank you.”  If you’re a guy who has a foot fetish then this is the perfect place to check out the cleanliness of her toes.  And perfect place for her to check your toes too!

Back to Van Gogh, my jaw dropped at the first sight of the living art space –make that art and food space.  The span of art in every inch of the room emits so much energy that one can’t help but be stirred.  There is definitely a conversation piece in every art work.

The naked eye sees the red graffiti wall at one end of the room, 2 regular coffee tables with seats, 2 low coffee tables with rugs/pillows for sitting/lounging, and a main dining table for groups of 5 or more.  But other than the obvious, there is so much stimulating vibe in the whole room radiating from the different quirky art pieces hanging, etched, written, deconstructed, and basically pieced together.

Before anything else, read the House Rules.  Key word: Self-service.  No one waits after you.  It’s a good time to see if your date can stretch a muscle or two or she has the tendency to be a prima donna.  Or you can serve her *shrugs* if that works for you.

After perusing the nonconforming menu that informs one about ingredients that release happy enzymes, write your orders on a sheet of paper and give it to the kitchen.

Spanish Plum Mint Tea PHP 55

The engagement doesn’t stop with the furnishings and art fixtures –it stems to the food as well.  When you order tea, you choose your own pot from the table decked with teapots, shot glasses and tea/coffee jars.  Tagged on the menu as an “Extra Upper,” it is mint tea with blend of premium quality organic Spanish plum tealeaves.  The teacup is decorated with a lone fresh mint leaf.  Pour yourself a warm start to an elevated food experience.

People who like fine-dining (uppity or friendly restos) may not necessarily appreciate the self-service, wait patiently, claygo (clean as you go) format. So come with a free mind and experience it for what it really offers.

8. Café on the 6th

Café on the 6th is located inside Ascott Hotel in Glorietta 4.  Ascott’s sophistication extends to the remarkable café found on its 6th floor.  Upholstered seats, white ceiling, subdued lighting, and wood tones complete the look.  It’s probably different during the breakfast crowd time but it’s also a good place for a dinner date.

Artisanal Cheese Board PHP 470

Cheese selection with olives, grapes, wheat crackers/crusty bread, dried nuts and apricots and honey is a good starter.  Local farm produced white chevre (I think this is the local white cheese), pecorino (this is the cheese studded with peppercorns) and blue pepato.  The crisp wheat cracker subdued taste and bit of sweetness of the dried apricots complement with the saltiness of the medley of cheese

Certified Angus Rib Eye Steak 12oz PHP 1050

Fresh from the grill, cooked to your preferred doneness –had that charred outer layer and tender meat locked with beefy juiciness.  It was served with three string beans as garnish and mashed potato with truffle oil as the siding.  It was the perfect combination, which might be like you and your date.

One male reader had already tried this out for a date and was happy about his and his girlfriend’s experience.

7. My Mother’s Garden

Bubba and I celebrated our 3rd year anniversary at My Mother’s Garden.

A classic garden-type of setting across a serene Koi pond surrounded by lush greenery sets the stage for the dining ambience in My Mother’s Garden.  The vibe of the residence of National Artist for Architecture Pablo S. Antonio follows the same warm “old house” charm as the outside.

The rate for two serves a variety of appetizers, pasta and entrées.  Highlight of our entire meal that time are the steak and the refreshing drink (assorted fruits concoction).  We really enjoyed the succulent steak entrée, which was basically 4 pieces of tenderloin steak cooked medium with au jus sauce.  If you are not a beef eater but open to mustard flavor, try their mustard chicken for some range.

6. Casita Xocolat and Maitre Chocolatier

Some say chocolates are aphrodisiacs that can stimulate sexual drives.  Regardless the need to intensify sexual desires, chocolates are proven to boost moods and energy.  Other than that, chocolate is one icon that is always associated with romance –that sweet note that stays on the lips, very much like love.  And we could all use a good romance in our lives.

Casita Xocolat

There are two places you can visit for good quality chocolate.  One of which is Casita Xocolat.  Located near Calle Industria in Libis, it is somewhat a hideaway from the usual commercial complexes that people frequent.  That’s what I particularly like about Casita Xocolat, it’s a breakaway from the city’s rush and people stream.  From the name itself, it’s a watering hole for all good things chocolate and quite surprisingly, savory dishes too.

Croquettas PHP 115

Potato fingers with ragu and choriqueso sauce.  Soft potato mash fried to perfection.  Combine the quezo and salsa dip together and it’s a pleasant appetizer to start with

Pork Belly with Cacao Bagoong PHP 185

Partly crispy, partly tender pork belly served with potato gratin and cacao-bagoong sauce.  This is definitely one of the must-try dishes for me.  Imagine a spoonful of your favorite pork belly with white rice and smidgen with semi-salty semi-sweet bagoong or shrimp paste with a faint trace of chocolate that takes out any fishy taste and makes the flavor to a degree –rich and with a different layer.

And you thought the “bagoong” was already a stretch of taste for a romantic date?  Try ordering the spicy “tuyo” or dried fish.

Spicy Tuyo PHP 165

Spicy Tuyo in olive oil with capers and garlic rice topped with scrambled eggs is a breakfast winner –or at any time of the day for that matter (we had it for dinner).  The sun-dried fish is mildly spiced and soft.

There are also a variety of chocolate desserts and drinks to try.  Toast to a chocolate evening with Xocolat Sunset (PHP 125) cocktail drink.

Maitre Chocolatier

Situated along Jupiter Street, this chocolate café’s intimate and romantic dining room is smartly decorated with a bar that looks like a chocolate bar, graceful mirrors and lighted wall details that look like hot chocolate cups, handsome black and brown mix and match of round and square café tables and chairs in subdued lighting.

Opt for Maitre Chocolatier if you’re looking for a light dinner with your date or an after-dinner dessert place.

Sweet Revenge (PHP 250) is Maitre Chocolatier’s Lindt Molten Lava Cake which is dark chocolate molten lava cake made from Europe’s finest Lindt Excellence Dark 70%, filled with oozing sweet and vengefully spicy chocolate served with vanilla ice cream

Get awaken by its gooey warm chocolate that ruptures from the moist cake that’s bittersweet dark and spiced with chili.  Midway when the chocolate flavor sinks in, the chili essence abruptly creeps in creating a sweet heat inside your mouth.  Cool off with the vanilla ice cream that soothes your taste buds to a calm reverie.  It’s a wonderful dessert to cap the evening.

If pastries aren’t your thing, it’s the ice cream that’s also an attention catcher at Maitre Chocolatier.

5. Urameshiya

Urameshiya is not a typical date place but I like the whole “out of Manila and inside Japan ambience.”  It can be quite a revitalizing experience to have the illusion of being transported to Japan even only for a few hours and get out of the usual hustling Metro –even if Urameshiya is really only within the “Little Tokyo” area of Makati City.

We went back 7 days after the first visit.

Ate dinner and watched Prison Break over draft beer.

Save some good money and order either the Tarafuku Set (PHP 1,850) or the Wagyu Toku Toku Set (PHP 3,000).  The grilling, even if it takes a while, is part of the whole she-bang!  You can be her knight with shining “grill tongs” and cook for her.  If you don’t want to be the grill hero, the lady attendants will gladly cook the meats for you.  Never mind the smoke because a bit of fire is never bad for any relationship.

4. Lemuria

Let your car veer toward the driveway of The Winery where Lemuria is located.  The privacy of the compound breathes a sense of secrecy and serenity.  The garden greets with a smile as you step closer to the Mediterranean-inspired country house, nestled among flowering shrubs.  The restaurant has limited space, adequate enough to accommodate 20 people.

From the same owner of Brumms Quality Wines Inc. Marian “Kitt” Bru Schroeder shares to us a space in her own front yard by transforming the upper deck of The Winery into a charming restaurant.  The short menu echoes classics from the French-Mediterranean region.  As for the extensive cellar, the restaurant offers wine from Germany, Romania, Austria, and from other areas in the European region.

Kurobuta Pork Belly PHP 760

Braised pork belly served with garlic potato puree with peppercorn sauce on the side.  Elegant in its simplicity of flavors, sprinkled with my favorite pink peppercorn –which I usually find in desserts instead of savories.  Chris wiped his plate out just giving me a couple of bites.  The pork belly was moist and flavorful –with just enough fat that you’d want to take.

Valrhona Chocolate Souffle Cake with Cinnamon Orange Ice Cream PHP 260

The Valrhona Chocolate Souffle Cake of Lemuria stands on its own with a crunchy outer crust while harmonized with an orange ice cream balanced on a sweet crispy thin, which essence reminded me of a local cookie.  The ice cream had a subtle citrus taste to it that complemented the sweet-bitterness of the chocolate.

4. Café Verbena

I called Café Verbena to reserve a table for two on January 5, 2008. It was my birthday dinner treat for Bubba. Saturday traffic at the South Expressway almost dampened our mood, but a relaxing vibe embraces you as you walk in the 80-seat restaurant of Café Verbena. Decorated in soft Tuscan tones and elegant drapery, Café Verbena maintained that Discovery Suites’ sophisticated look.

Organic Mozzarella Cheese Pot PHP 240

Since we are such cheese lovers, we had to order this. Served ‘fondue-style” in an earthy pot, the cheese serving wasn’t bad at all. Spicy tomato relish and fresh Tagaytay herbs were added to the cheese mixture. It was served with warm focaccia. We had to ask for extra since we finished the bread first before the cheese.

Verbena’s Sampler Plate PHP 650

We are so ecstatic to try everything on the menu since we traveled all the way from Manila just for dinner. Instead of ordering too many dishes that we might just not finish, we ordered the sampler plate with three small samplings of Verbena’s top entrées. We shared the dish and the price was well worth it.

Grilled Norwegian Salmon with Arugula-Mushroom Salad

I personally enjoyed the salmon among the rest because the salmon was tasty and juicy. Plus the crispy skin of the salmon is unforgettable –I want to order this again if only for the salty crackling skin. I wanted to steal Bubba’s share of the salmon skin but restrained myself.

Café Verbena is one of the classiest restaurants in the hills of Tagaytay, which is a definite place for romantic ambience

3. Sala Bistro

Elegant with simple handsome décor, a well-established restaurant, Sala offers exceptional food and service in the city of Makati.

Romantic, quaint, comfortable and classy best describe the mood in Sala.  One can have a leisurely meal and never feel rushed.  The owners can pride themselves on creating a fashionable atmosphere of fine dining and professional service.  The wait staff anticipates the patrons needs and are as accommodating as possible.  Perfectly knows how to waltz in and out of your sight without any sense of being intrusive.

Portabello Mushroom, Ricotta and Thyme Ravioli with Parmesan and White Truffle Oil PHP 460

The pasta was cooked al dented with chock full of thyme and minced Portabello mushrooms that is savory in every bite.  Sheer Parmesan shaves on top of the ravioli add a shade of saltiness to the dish while the white truffle oil enhances the overall taste with alluring and appetizing truffle fragrance.

2. Aubergine

I’ve never had a date with Bubba here but I’ve been meaning to bring him.  I’ve been here a few times either for an event or a business meeting –but I’d say it can also be a great venue for a quiet dinner with your special someone.

Roasted Wagyu Beef Tri Tip PHP 1,200

With pan-fried duck foie gras, Port wine sauce, glazed vegetable and Pommery mustard mash potato

The entrée plate arrived looking fanciful with the lavish alliance of Wagyu and foie gras at the spotlight, outlined with champagne froth, while shoestring potatoes curled resembling a bush, glossed vegetables and mustard mashed potato at the hem.

Requested for medium and the kitchen got the perfect doneness according to preference.  The Wagyu beef is just divine, a reddish pink center with an outer charred layer perfectly seared, locking the moisture of succulent meat.  The luxurious lean cut of Wagyu didn’t have intense marbling in it as most expect of Wagyu beef.  Tri tip is a comparatively lean cut since it is taken from the bottom sirloin, similar to skirt steak.

Foie gras, the fattened liver of a duck or goose, in this case duck, was indisputably delicious.  It was definitely rich in flavor, surprisingly more generous in size than expected.  Quite delicately rich and creamy, it enhanced the beef flavor of the meat providing an almost melting effect in the mouth.

1. Antonio’s

Nestled in the hills of Tagaytay some kilometers off the main road, the restaurant is made up of three levels, joined by a common patio.  The charming dining rooms have different vibes: one romantic amidst the garden and koi pond overlooking the lower level, 2nd area is more for small functions amidst the wooden panels, while the lower level has a contemporary look.  The lower dining area is decorated with elegant chandeliers in a white and black motif and matching wall sconces.

The dining rooms are softly lit, creating a romantic ambience.  Piano music plays in the background.  Whichever room you dine in, the food comes from the same wonderful kitchen of Executive Chef Antonio Escalante.  The Chef greets his diners with a friendly smile and a warm hello and you know you’re in for a special treat.

It was such a fantastic evening, the cool night breeze gently nipping on my skin.  His face tinted with a glow from the candlelight.  Warm and happy smiles were all around.  A spark.  Rekindling.

The highlight of the entire meal was the grilled prime rib eye steak.  It was cooked to our preferred doneness -we had it medium.  The beef titanic arrived in a large rustic plate, looking pristine in its oil, garnished with loads of crispy spring onions and garlic.  The meat is soft, juicy and flavorful with just the right marbling.  Every bite evoked a soft whimper.  The steak definitely gave a palatable satisfaction that gets your buck’s worth.

Every dish was obscenely delicious –begging for a much-anticipated return.

1. 22 Prime/Serendipity Lounge

It was Saturday, the cool and crisp evening air surrounds the city.  The night was begging for a gratifying dinner and off we headed to Discovery Suites.  Café Verbena of Discovery Country Suites in Tagaytay was a delightful experience when I gave Bubba his birthday treat in 2008.  No need to travel far south as Discovery Suites in Ortigas can perhaps replicate that.

The 22nd level of Discovery Suites leads to a modernly decorated lounge with plush interiors and expansive glass windows that provide a luminous visual of North Manila’s skyline.  Live piano music fills the air.  Candle lit lamp adds romance to each table.  The elegance and sophisticated charm of Serendipity Lounge of Discovery Suites extends to the restaurant adjoining it, 22 Prime –the very destination of that evening’s dinner… and many other dinners that followed.

22 Prime/Serendipity Lounge is the place Bubba and I frequent particularly when we are looking for a “comfort zone.”  Every visit here gives us a certain expression of comfort that reflects in the genuine service, delicious dishes and warm relaxing ambience.

No matter what you do on your date or where you go, the Happy Peddler says the key to a romantic date is in the person you are with… it’s in the company… it’s in the laughter you’ll share… in the open attitude… the conversation you’d remember… and the smile that will always be picture perfect because it’s genuine… 🙂

My Mother’s Garden

Bubba and I celebrated our 3rd year anniversary Wednesday night, (02-10-2010).  I volunteered to think of our dinner destination but it was a stressful week at work this week so I just passed on the task to Bubba.  He was trying to keep it a mystery but when the car hit Zamora St. somewhere in Manila, he looked at me and knew that I knew where we were headed (his forever complaint is, it’s really hard to surprise me).  With a heavy sigh and a shaking head, he said, “I should write a book entitled, How to Date a Date Expert.”  I just laughed.

The 2650 gate opened to a discreet residence with a beautiful patch of garden.  There are some tables outside where one can enjoy summer dining.  We parked conveniently inside and walked towards the house.

A classic garden-type of setting across a serene Koi pond surrounded by lush greenery sets the stage for the dining ambience in My Mother’s Garden.  The vibe of the residence of National Artist for Architecture Pablo S. Antonio follows the same warm rustic charm as the outside.

The architectural buildings that Pablo S. Antonio created are displayed in framed photographs hanging on the wall.  Bubba pre-ordered so while waiting for them to serve the dishes, I gave Bubba my gift –the music video of his surprise party.  We played it on his laptop creating a bit of a noise (alternative song by Daughtry) in the otherwise tranquil place.

The place for me is reminiscent of the relaxed feeling of dining at Casa San Pablo in Laguna

Maybe the Last at CAV

After gushing with much gusto about my Cav experience in May, a lackluster dinner last month proved that first impression does not last.  I made dinner reservations for two at Cav sometime end of October but because of the Conquer Zambales race, had to move it to another week.  Following the great dinner I had in Cav the first time around, I wanted Chris to experience it for himself –so I planned a simple “dinner date” for him.

November 7, Friday, traffic going to Makati/Fort was startlingly light that day.  We breezed through EDSA with no hitches and had enough time for our 8pm reservation.

Terrible service really cramps the mood and this actually set the theme for the whole evening.  The wait staff taking our orders had his head towards the other direction while we were ordering.  His uninterested attitude didn’t bother me at that point.

When Chris’ main course was being served, the attendant wasn’t cautious about the knife he was holding and almost carved through Chris’ nose while he placed the plate on the table.  This is when my radar got alerted.  We still didn’t say anything trying to ignore the service mishaps in order to save our supposedly amorous dinner date.  Freshly ground pepper took another summon before request was heeded.

We ordered wine after the first course and told the waiter but he left immediately after hearing me say wine without even asking how many glasses we were getting.  Wine was served only during the main course when I requested for it as early as for the 2nd course.  Water was late, on our main course when it finally arrived.  You beckon to waiters and they try to avoid your direction –pretending they didn’t see.  This evening was what I call a total wreck.

Chris’ Set

First Course

Classic Beef Steak Tartar with Sweet Potato Crisps, Quail eggs, and organic greens

Second Course

Homemade Lemon and Parmesan Tortellini with Prosciutto di Parma

Main Course

Slow cooked Moroccan spiced Lamb Shank with Roasted Vegetable Couscous

Between Bites’ Set

First Course

Heart of Organic Baby Romaine with Jamon Crisps, Caper Berries, and Truffle Aioli

Second Course

Three Mushroom Soup with Champagne Foam

Main Course

US Striploin “double cut” with Potato Gnocchi and Porcini Truffle Essence (Add PHP 550)

The total cost of the entire dinner for two was close to PHP 4,000.  With that amount of money, I didn’t expect a lesser service than fastfood chains –where I’ve had better service actually, wait staff are more careful, respectful and client-friendly.  For the money that was burned, I could’ve opted to go to many other places than be disappointed minute after minute at Cav.

For months, when friends asked me restaurant recommendations, Cav was always in the list.  Perhaps I should revisit my list again… because I definitely don’t find Cav too sexy anymore.
