Leaving No Steaks Unturned at House of Wagyu Stone Grill

First time I dined at House of Wagyu Stone Grill was back in 2009 at their Eastwood branch while the last time I visited was in late October last year, this time at their Greenhills branch.  The restaurant still boasts of its handsome sophisticated interiors highlighted by their chiller inside the dining room which displays their select wines and Wagyu beef.

Stone Grill’s culinary focus is their Wagyu beef and its signature style of cooking the beef tabletop on top of a hot stone grill.  Wagyu beef is considered a premium cut of beef due to its exquisite marbling.  Beef lovers will find satisfaction in the range of Wagyu beef available at House of Wagyu Stone Grill.

Pleased to note that attentiveness and attention to detail are still apparent in their service.  What I particularly like about House of Wagyu is the ability to leave the cooking preference of your steak unto your own hands.

On the Table

Oyster Rockefeller Php 500

One of my favorite apps at House of Wagyu Stone Grill is their Oyster Rockefeller.  Topped with white sauce, salty bacon bites and Parmesan cheese then baked to perfection with little burnt cheese parts that I love.  I can finish one whole plate by myself.

Gambas

Another one of my favorite starters

Traditional Caesar Salad Php 300

Romaine lettuce, croutons, bacon and freshly shaved Parmesan.  It was light, fresh and crisp with spears of sharp flavors from the bacon and Parmesan shaves.

Mad for Pizza

These past 3 months have been nothing short of exhaustingly crazy busy and hectic. I’ve been remiss in posting and blogging. My last entry was in mid-November about Centrum and the last time I shared my last food / restaurant discovery was in October. It’s not like I have stopped eating. In fact, I can’t let being busy get in the way of sharing my recent fondness of a pizza parlor in QC.

Pizza has been my favorite comfort food since I was a kid. From being taught shapes in kindergarten or pie charts in geometry class, anything circular makes me fantasize about a round cheesy pizza. There is no saying no to pizza. But the best way to enjoy it is to be able to share that comfort with people close to you like dear friends. Isis, EJ, Shar, Lia and I tried a new restaurant and set out for Mad for Pizza one Saturday brunch.

The restaurant is located at the Il Terrazzo plaza in the Tomas Morato area. Cyril Reyes and partners birthed the concept for Mad for Pizza and officially opened its doors in June 2014. The interiors are bright, airy and spacious. It feels modern with elements of a retro pizza diner, especially their cool throwback music reminiscent of the Awesome Mixed Tape of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Typhoon Glenda and Preparedness

I find it a little strange how people can celebrate escalating winds and storm signals just to have work suspended or canceled. I appreciate holiday from work and would likely do cartwheels every time I get some bit of separation from it, but not at the cost of dangerous weather forecasts since a degree of risk, whether to us or other people, is always attached to it. PAGASA is always scrutinized being a work in progress (aren’t we all) but shouldn’t we all be silently praying that the storm changes direction and never hit any part of the country? Or do we just find satisfaction in proving someone wrong?

PAGASA reports that Typhoon Glenda as of 12pm today is at 40km northeast of Catarman, Northern Samar.

PAGASA advised the public to prepare and take pre-cautionary measures.

PAGASA urges public to constantly monitor weather updates.

PASAGA expects typhoon Glenda to intensify further with likelihood to raise storm signals to Signal #3.

Check Typhoon Preparedness Advisory from time to time.

Below are some practical preparedness tips we sometimes overlook, time to double check:

Keep all your mobile phones, laptops, and other communication means fully charged.

Disseminate information on weather and warning advisory to your family members, friends and colleagues. Check on them and ask them to go home already soonest possible time.

Store an adequate supply of food and clean water. Prepare food that need not be cooked.

Keep flashlights, candles and battery-powered radios within easy reach.

Always keep yourself updated with the latest weather report.

Should you need to evacuate, bring clothes, first aid kit, candles/flashlight, battery-powered radio, food, water, among others.

Typhoon Glenda is expected to hit Metro Manila this afternoon.

Take a Right to Main Street, Tuscany McKinley Hill

A partially impromptu dinner saw me finally visiting the Tuscany restaurant strip at McKinley Hill, Fort.  I wasn’t planning to eat since I was on an after-6 diet but I had a long day at work, I deserved a release.

I walked through the narrow path where all the restaurants are lined up – some are branches of restaurants I’ve visited before, others are totally new to me.  The evening had a cool crisp breeze and the many trees around add to the relaxing climate –and to my appetite.  I was debating between the ramen place, Wursty Wursty and ended up at Main Street.

RAP Steaks and Cakes

A couple of weeks ago, I accompanied a friend to dinner but since I was on my after-6 diet (no, I wasn’t) and it was successful for 4 straight days (no, it wasn’t), I didn’t eat anything (no, I did).  I was just there to make sure somebody who’s been skipping meals would eat and to raise the level of conversation – readers, you know I’m saying this with a mocking tone.

I could not add any scale of intelligence in any dialogue… unless you feed me Chef Ariel’s Unsalted Butter Poached Langoustine with Foie Gras, then I could probably narrate the logic why Pi is an irrational number and a mathematical constant always equaling to 3.1416, which is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.  See, it has that effect.

Before I further yap and try to fool you with the amount of aptitude I have, we stumbled upon Rap, unassuming and without much expectation.  Long story short, I tried a piece of the steak that was ordered just to get a taste and I was pleasantly surprised.

Griddle Melts at IHOP Philippines

I see myself back at IHOP checking out a new reason to visit.  IHOP Restaurant in BGC launched handcrafted made to order sandwiches that come in three variants – experience the new item in their menu, Griddle Melts.

These sandwiches are not your ordinary sandwiches as each is served on artisan sourdough bread with a choice of three fluffy omelets in large breakfast sandwich.

Big choices that give you value for your money as any order come with your choice of hash browns or seasoned fries.  Full sandwich can be had at P385 and P325 for a half order.  I say, always go full throttle.

On the Table

Spinach, Roasted Pepper and Cheese Melt

Sautéed fresh spinach in a fluffy egg omelet topped with roasted red peppers and onions, melted Provolone, Parmesan and Pepper Jack cheeses make up my favorite of the three.  I know I am biased, 3 cheeses.  How can I resist?

The Best Part of this Season

Hello folks.  Have you been wondering how I am?  Thank you.

I’ve been doing great, still slightly off normalcy with some bottled up craziness, but when does that ever change anyway?  A straight jacket is still often nearby if necessary.

As you all know, this season is not something I welcomed immediately with open arms.  As for everyone who ever really valued relationships and have loved deeply, you’d understand how hard it is a transition to move to singlehood.  The walk into the woods a.k.a healing season has to come first before frolicking through the meadow, running into the sun with open arms ready for a big embrace.

Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez on SKY Cable HD

Too many Alvarez boxers that this fight is named Mayweather vs. Canelo instead of the latter’s last name.  Supposedly the highest purse fight in boxing history with $41.5 cool million as his minimum guarantee to just step inside the ring.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, 23, will be facing 36-year-old Floyd Mayweather Jr.  this coming Sunday (Manila time) –both fighters with undefeated record.  Mayweather maintains that he is still at the peak of his game and continues to be his usual confident arrogant self.

Canelo is apparently the Spanish translation to the boxer’s ginger hair.  No mistake that he is also a world champ even if Mayweather dismisses the fact saying there are just too many belts in the field now and these young bloods easily get one compared to the time veterans really have to earn it the long hard way.

Catch the Mayweather vs. Canelo fight this weekend.  SKY Cable is giving this PPV fight FREE and in HIGH DEFINITION via SKYcable FREE VIEW HD to all subscribers with the HD box.  The event will air this Sunday, Sept 15.  Live telecast begins at 9AM.

For those SKY Cable subscribers who do not have the HD Digibox, other than me suggesting you get one to change your life and up your viewing experience, you can still catch this real-time, as it happens, via LIVESTREAMING on iWantv also at 9AM.

Rekindled with Lolo Dads

Somebody mentioned Lolo Dads during a table conversation and my friend Irene piped in, “hey, that’s Jane’s favorite restaurant.”  I looked at her slightly bewildered like an illicit love affair was exposed.  “How did you know?”  I asked.  She said, “Of course, I’m your friend.  I know Lolo Dads is your favorite.”

That’s just how friends are… they know your heart and its desires.  In this case, she has probably seen my photos of Lolo Dads dinners of past and likely has heard me say countless times that it’s my all-time favorite (when I don’t think about Antonio’s or vice versa –these two have an ongoing battle of who’s first inside my heart).

The ahi tuna loin tasted fresh and light.  Tucked underneath is the marinated salmon stealing the scene from the tuna adding a richer aspect, its salmon meat creamy and continued towards the outer cover of the grilled watermelon.  The watermelon block then bursts in the mouth with its juice almost erasing the slightest fish element.

Shawarma Guys Shawarma-rama

Next to my favorite Mexican, I enjoy Persian food since their sauces and spices are also divine.  Italian and Japanese cuisines come close 3rd or tie it at 2nd place.  Remember in high school where there was a Shawarma explosion and it became a food craze?  The recently opened Shawarma Guys at the Fort is bringing back all the love we had for everything Shawarma.

There are a number of Persian restaurants in town where you can get shawarma, that gyro-type of wrap or Persian-version of a soft taco if you will, filled with either grilled lamb, beef, chicken, turkey or veal skimmed off a vertical spit.  Since it’s the dawn of a new age, Shawarma Guys is veering a little bit off authenticity and taking on a more playful yet contrastingly intense approach to shawarma.

Matchmaker Speech

Last year, my very good friend Jayvee married his life partner, Chie.  The garden setting had the backdrop of the famous and beautiful Ruins in Bacolod.  I almost didn’t make that trip but by grace, I was there to witness and support the wonderful ceremony.

Here’s a video snippet and some excerpts from the speech.

Ignore the shaking voice and stumbles please.

Including the part where I almost swallowed a mosquito.

“Jayvee told me 4 months ago that I have to make a short speech on his wedding day.  I thought he said it in passing.  Since he only confirmed a few hours ago that I am really going to have to say something, I didn’t come prepared.”

[Excuse me] I motioned for CW to walk towards me and he retrieved a piece of paper from his coat pocket.  He handed it to me swiftly and I thanked him.

“Okay, maybe just a tiny little bit.  I’m allowed a cheat sheet.  [Ok, good that that sounded right, I thought I’d be too nervous and say, cheat sh*t.]

I met Jayvee I think in 2005 when he was still with Hinge, the magazine publication of Inquirer and I was doing marketing for a Korean company.  We worked on a project or two.  I heard then that Jayvee was sort of a ladies man.  Well, who believes stories?  I’ve come to know Jayvee more being friends and affirmed that was probably sort of true.

I moved on to work for SKY and met Chie through CW, since CW works for ABS-CBN.  For some odd reason, maybe a divine one, I felt a nudge to introduce Jayvee to Chie.  Set both up on a date.  Jayvee, faster than a speeding bullet, went ahead and checked Chie’s online profile, (was it still Friendster that time?), liked what he saw and went ahead and messaged her… YES, before I even got a chance to prepare slash warn Chie for what’s to come.

The two goes on a date… a 2nd date… then a 3rd… then a friendly date.  Jayvee told me a few months after that he thinks Chie only sees him as a friend and wants to be just that.  I thought to myself, “uh-oh, friend zone.”  But he didn’t let up, he pursued that friendship and both of them continued to hang out, over wine, good food, beer and never-ending bonding moments.

A year or so passed.  I got to talk to Jayvee again and he told me that he feels there is more connection brewing between the two of them… Chie’s likely found a soft spot for Jayvee and I can imagine Chie’s heart and a possible tiny opening.  Chie probably agreed to dating exclusively after that… and soon after became a couple.  The next time I talked to Jayvee… he couldn’t stop talking about Chie and how he’s totally fallen in love with her, how she’s different from all the women he’s ever met… her quirky ways, how her presence affects him. My friend was totally smitten.  And he had that faraway loving look on his eyes when he talked about Chie, like he was just talking to himself and I wasn’t even there.  I saw in him a growing appreciation of who Chie has become in his life.

Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen

Although stores and shops are still sparse in the newly opened East Wing of Shangri-la Mall, its food landscape is starting to shape up.  The well-lit spanking new hallways of the mall can easily usher you to check out the line of new restaurants.  I’ve tried two in this part of Shang and another one last Sunday after attending the 4pm Service taking on an unscheduled dinner invite.

 Wrong Ramen Makes it Right

Nomama Artisan Ramen

Kichitora of Tokyo

After scouring 2 levels and eliminating Shabu Shabu, Sushi and Filipino restaurants, we finally settled to have something light and not heavy that evening.  Ramen was the choice and I was sort of craving for it.  That brings us to the door of Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen, which had a line outside.  Good thing we just needed a table for two and there was one ready for us.

Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen, East Wing, Shangrila Mall, Shangri-la Mall, New, new restaurants, list, Metro Manila, Philippines, Mandaluyong City, Quezon City restaurants, ramen place, best ramen in Manila, Japanese, Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen menu, photo, Pinoy, Filipino, Mall restaurants, Santouka Ramen, Glorietta, battle of ramen, ramen craze, best Ramen restaurant, Fukuokka, Shang, price, dinner date, interior, food review, between bites, food blog, lifestyle blog, janedchua.com, foodie

The interior of Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen is quite an eyeful, heavily designed with wood panels marked with Japanese characters.  I don’t know if space-functionality is compromised but it certainly gives a bona fide Japanese feel with all the lighting fixture and wood element.

Specializing in Ramen, the menu is quite limited but centers mainly on ramen offerings.   Soup flavors come in different categories mainly: shio ramen (salt flavored soup), shoyu ramen (soy sauce flavored soup), tonkotsu ramen (pork bone based creamy soup), and miso ramen (miso flavored soup).

On the Table

Gyoza P150

6 pieces of Japanese potstickers, a great starter or side dish for the bowls of ramen.  Bite into the tasty dumpling filled with minced pork and chives, dip lightly in the gyoza sauce it comes with and pop the whole thing in your mouth and enjoy the outside crunch intermingled with the soft filling inside.

Miso Tonkotsu P380

Tonkotsu-based soup with very rich pork broth specially blended with quality miso paste.  It comes with green onion, bamboo shoots and 2 slices of pork chasu.  I smell the waft coming from the bowl and I know I am in for a treat.  The warm broth was comforting yet had spikes of unexpectedness, like it is familiar but I am still surprised.

The bamboo shoots add a crunch while the half / soft boiled egg (P50) I ordered on the side attached softness and some creaminess.  The slice of roasted pork is tender but lacked the taste of roast but the flavorful orange broth brings everything in.

Juanito’s Bistro

If you’ve been seeing Bahay ni Juan in Kapitolyo for a while and wondering where it’s gone, the restaurant transferred to a new location within Kapitolyo in a more relaxing setting.  After Frisbee practice last night, my college friend Ace and I trooped to Juanito’s for a late “light” dinner.  It was my first time there but apparently, Ace almost got to try every item on the menu.

It was packed when we got there around 11pm with different tables holding groups in happy chatter.  We were handed the menu which is just one single printed paper attached to a cork board with pins on the side.  It was sort of fun to just pin the circle of your choice items in the menu.

Urbn Bar and Kitchen, Like You’ve Never Laid Your Lips On

It is no secret that if I come home around 5 or 6 am during the weekend, Urbn was probably where I spent the night.  Being my favorite bar these days outside Skye Lounge and Relik, Urbn is the choice watering hole of party denizens thirsty to let their hair down and have a good time.

Urbn is a pretty strong player in the club scene producing both the best cocktail and music mixes.  There is always an amazing energy that fills the venue and wait staff assigned to your table is usually attentive, capable and courteous, taking away the worry of the day.

Carrying elements that total to a memorable night of music, dance and fun, it is no wonder that urbanites troop to where it’s really at.

Modern Tapas Terrific at Relik

Albeit the overflow of the social crowd past 12 midnight, what’s still under the radar is Urbn’s prowess in the kitchen during dinner time.  I walk into the familiar setting, this time on a different light.  The comfortable dining room is handsomely decorated and well-lighted before 10 oh-clock hits.

The main dining area is quite grand and dramatic with larger-than-life chairs surrounding the long huge table.  If you’ve acquainted yourself with the Jacks, Johnnies and Joses that you order smartly in bottles at Urbn, as well as Urbn’s list of original mixed drinks, equally vibrant are their menu items and dinner dishes.

Double Baked Manchego Soufflé

This lightly baked savory dish, made with egg yolks and beaten egg whites, had the right puff-up feel, even if it was turned over, which is difficult to perfect.  Its airy egg-y lightness sparked with creamy yet slight sharpness of the Spanish cheese, Manchego and embellished with the crispy, almost paper thin Jamon Serrano that has that slight sweetness.

I really enjoyed this starter and the soufflé’s fluffiness specked with mild contrasts.

Last March 5, the team trooped to Las Flores for dinner.  It was a birthday treat for me and Karen from dee boss.  We walked into Las Flores’ contemporary interiors with industrial-looking lamps and chandeliers and settled on our table.  I felt easy on the chair and ready for a relaxing dinner that awaits us.

I loved their salad a lot that when no one was getting anymore, I finished what was left off the bowl.  Dee boss wanted more and ordered another Ensalada Las Flores.  The greens were crispy, fresh tasting, the goat cheese giving that tangy slightly sharp yet mild taste.  Tomatoes and potatoes and caramelized apples provide a crunchy texture other than semi sweet elements to the starter.  One of the better salads in the Metro.

Wrong Ramen Makes It Right

Heard of the book, “Chicken Noodle Soup for the Soul”?  I read two versions of it in High School.  With all the good ramen bars, opening left and right in the Metro, somebody should be able to come up with a version, Ramen for the Food Soul.  Last Sunday, I met with the Foodie Club to try out this new ramen place located in Burgos Circle / Forbestown area at the Fort.  I’ve asked around and people have actually heard of Wrong Ramen.

I almost would have missed it, with all the ramen restaurants sprouting.  But I didn’t, since Wrong Ramen, first, has its catchy name, triggering my inquisitive mind as to why they would name a restaurant as anything wrong.  With what Wrong Ramen can offer, their concept sticks since it is right in all the Wrong places.  Confused yet?  Turns out, it is a delicious confusion.

Wrong Ramen for the most part is based on homemade Hokkaido style ramen soups.  It’s this Japanese dish of noodles in well-prepared broth, often garnished with small pieces of meat and vegetables. Daringly, they have taken the bold path of attributing creative spins to their menu dishes.

IHOP Philippines, OPENS in Fort

Last Sunday, it was bonding day with my little brotha and I decided to bring him to IHOP for brunch.  Since I never followed through after our initial runs of jogging, I finally decided to just do the next best exercise… EAT.  Now, who’s with me?  Raise your hands up!  Aye Aye!

IHOP Philippines, IHOP Manila, IHOP photos, iHOP, international, house, of pancakes, best, list, 2013, IHOP menu, food blog, food blogger, between bites, janedchua, address, location, W Building, IHOP prices, pancake flavors, breakfast, best breakfast place, Metro Manila, Philippines, contact number, reservation

We get to IHOP by 1130am and the line was way too long, it was discouraging.  I still went up to the reception and decided to leave my name and number, unfortunately, they don’t take your numbers to advise if your table is free.  They want you to wait outside their store under the scorching heat.  Fine, I ask how long the waiting time usually takes… Non-committal answer of “we are not sure.”  I prodded and was told, “for hours.”  Now, I don’t know if that meant “four or for” (I didn’t beg anymore to feel their excitement or eagerness to serve us) but regardless, hours with an “s” meant at least 2.  I wanted to set a good example to my bro and show exemplary patience.  Maybe next time.

I am crazy but not THAT crazy.  We left and had lunch at a different place.  Since my Frisbee friend Jed invited to try out IHOP with him, I decided to give it another try.  This time, we targeted an early morning visit.  There were plans of running and doing leg work that will help my Frisbee game, but sometimes, the next best thing is best… what else?  The very nobility this blog stands for.  EATING.
