The Script, Jason Mraz, Aerosmith and Cascades 2013 Live in Manila CONCERT – where to get tickets!

There are four LIVE concerts in Manila this summer that I am itching to watch…

1. Jason Mraz LIVE in Manila

Ovation Productions and Music Management International brings back American singer-songwriter, Jason Mraz to Manila.  I remember watching his concert last year with Toca Rivera with my Victory church friends.  That was back in October 2011 and nay even 2 years, and he’s here again.  This year, he plays with his band.

I also watched the last Script concert in Manila and it was with CW.  We both decided to give the Bleachers, also known as General Admission section, a try and experience a concert from that perspective (other than ticket prices are expensive and the seating area we like are already almost sold out).  Lo and behold, it was one of the most fun concerts we’ve experienced.  We were just chill and we could sing out loud without a care in the world.  Money well spent.

Lifehouse Fan

July 26.  The Lifehouse band made waves on their first ever concert in Manila.  Araneta Coliseum was packed!  Bubba bought the tickets a month or so in advance.  He was really excited to watch them perform live.  Candidly, as much as I love a lot of their songs, I wouldn’t pay more than 1K to see them.  Well, the tickets we had are at 2K each.  Maybe he wanted to hear them in their purest form.  Everything seemed all set for the evening with his high hopes of sitting next to a guy who won’t be singing along with the band.  Leave a guy in peace with his favorite alternative rock band?  I was on his left smiling all ears and enjoying the songs.  Whereas, Bubba was sitting next to a screaming, gaping fan who was stomping her feet like crazy and going berserk.

Poor guy, you’d think.

That’s nothing new to him especially when he is late to meet me.

Mother’s Day at Bellini’s

Genuine Italian charm and classic Italian cuisine are what you can expect from this well-liked restaurant that popularized the Cubao Exchange compound.  Bellini’s is divided into three dining sections that have hand-painted walls.  Even the ceiling displays the colorful character of Italians through portraits of chatting and eating men.  Owner Roberto Bellini used to hold a job as paparazzi but together with his wife Ma. Luisa, he decided to put the camera to rest and become a restaurateur.

The first time I dined in here was about 4 years ago.  My friend, Paolo, was the one who introduced me to this place.  I would travel all the way from Makati to Cubao, just to have lunch here.

bell12

When you arrive, an amuse bouche of breadsticks are placed on your table accompanied by olive oil and balsamic dip.  Mr. Bellini buys some of the ingredients personally from our local market while the other ingredients are imported.  Each dish is prepared to order using the finest ingredients.

bell13

The professional waitstaff who has been with the family for many years, know the customers and treat them like old friends.  It has been two years since I last dined here but the headwaiter still remembered me.

bell14

On the Table (I don’t remember the actual names of the dishes):

Ravioli with Spinach

bell3

Pasta Fungi with Prosciutto and Truffle Cream

bell4

Pasta Carbonara

bell2

Penne Rustico with Vigan Longgganisa

bell5

4- Cheese Pizza

I have no complaints because they have the thinnest pizza crust which has the perfect bite.  Put some chili olive oil on it and it’s heaven.

bell6

Napoli Pizza

bell6

Tenderloin Steak in Pepper Sauce

Jem really liked the sauce and is prompted to go back because of this dish.

bell7

Sole Fish in White Cream

bell8

Tiramisu

It had a strong liquorish flavor but I’m not a big fan of this dessert nowadays.

bell9

Orange Cake

The cake lacks moist to hold the cake together.  It had the right sweetness and orange taste but it’s too crumbly for me.

bell1

Panna Cota

bell9

Every visit, you will receive a warm welcome from the owner and staff of this well-established restaurant that has become a landmark in serving authentic Italian cuisine.

Mogwai

“We’ll have dinner tonight.  Are you wearing jeans?”  When Bubba sends an SMS like that, it only means that we’re eating casual.  And it’s best to be on my jeans or else I might be uncomfortable.  When he started veering near Cubao Expo, I already surmised where he was taking me.  Mogwai.

mog1

I first heard of Mogwai from my friend, Mon, who is the drummer of the band, Marty Mcfly.  He invited me to watch their gig at Mogwai last year.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to go.  It’s been a running joke between him and I as to the number of times we invite each other and the number of times we actually go.  I still say I have the higher probability of going to his invite than him to mine.  But much love to him and May because they went all the way to Jumbo restaurant to see us off during the Nokia night race, even if the initial plan was to send us off at the Makati Shangri-la (wait a sec, was that because of me or Andi Manzano?  I haven’t quite cleared that out yet, so I’m only thankful to May.  Haha.)

mog2

It was already quite full when we arrived so we had no choice but to have our dinner at the bar, which was perfectly fine because I met Elison.  Elison is one of the green-clad Mogwai-ters who is efficiently tending the bar.  He served me my Mojito and asked us how our food was.

mog3

 On the Table:

mog5

Squash soup PHP 80

Clam chowder used to be my favorite, then French onion soup, but now squash soup tops the list of soup picks.  For PHP 80, this has got to be the best soup to have.  For the price, it didn’t taste like just an ordinary powdered soup brought to life.  It tasted fresh with the right tang and sweetness.

mog8

Sole Fillet Pasta PHP 180

I wanted to order this but Bubba beat me to it so I let him have it.  Being the sweetheart that he is, he exchanged our orders so I eventually ended up eating the pasta but we shared the fish.

mog6

Skinless Longganisa Rice PHP 110

This is not the typical longganisa that looks like a small sausage.  It was morsels of longganisa meat toasted to a crunch.

mog8

Dark Chocolate Molten Lava PHP 90

Bubba really fell in love with this dessert!  I don’t know if it was his first time to try a molten lava dessert but he extremely liked it.  I also did.  The interplay of the hot chocolate sponge and the cold cream on top of excite the senses.  It was dense and buttery on the outside with a luscious liquid surprise inside and the white cream on top brings it all together in sweet harmony.

mog9

Mojito PHP 90

Adverse to just one sprig of mint, Mogwai’s Mojito had generous amount of freshly chopped mint, which added crunch to the drink.

mog10

I enjoyed chatting with Elison, who apparently was given that name because he is Eli’s (the name of his dad) son.  How convenient.

mog7

As Elison tells me more about the bar, my eyes wandered around the restaurant cum theater bar.  Only the first floor serves as the dining area.  A huge expensive silver refrigerator inside the bar, yellow circular lamps hang from the ceiling, unique tables and chairs (where one actually looks like a chair fit for a king), and a lonesome Coca-cola painting make up for the interior décor.  It’s open-air with industrial fans serving ventilation.  It can be quite hot even during dinner especially whn they are packed.  Mogwai fits suitably at home with all the other art galleries and stores in this booming art capital of Manila –knack of art on garments, food, photography and furniture.  Independent and uniquely diverse, Cubao Expo had come far from just being the location of Bellini’s and Marikina shoes.

mog11

A small theater occupies the whole second floor of Mogwai.  Film screenings are offered to which membership is required.  Schedule of screening is available online or else it is displayed in the huge blackboard placed on one of the walls.  Erik Mati owns the place, which makes sense.  This is the brainchild of all that he is great at –film, art and cooking.  Yes oh yes, he is the master behind the recipes of Mogwai’s dishes.

mog13

Elison said KC Concepcion used to frequent Mogwai, along with other celebrities or directors.  This is also a favorite UP hang out.  25 bands performed in their recently concluded event that San Mig sponsored 2 weekends ago.  Mogwaiters are very attentive (which I didn’t expect from a casual restaurant), friendly and alert.  Being first timers, we requested to see the theater and they accommodated.  I particularly liked our bartender/host of the evening.  Elison knows his business –quick, smart and sensitive (not imposing, knows just when to retreat when need to).  To be in the company of genius arts, smart food (economical price but flavorful and grub worthy), people who appreciate both, Mogwai is the place to be.

mog14

Prices are vat inclusive and there is no service charge.  There is a fish bowl at the bar that serves as tip box.  Bubba couldn’t wait to go back, especially for the Dark Chocolate Molten Lava.  Maybe we’d start with dessert on our next visit.

mog12

Mogwai is located at Cubao X or Expo (previously the Marikina Shoe Expo compound) right across Rustan’s Fresh Supermarket in Cubao.  Mogwai operation hours is from 5pm-2am, but sometimes extends until 4am during weekends.  For reservations, contact 9866954.
