TIPS:  START PACKING AN EMERGENCY BAG

SOME SURVIVAL TIPS:

1. Stock on food at home, car, office and in your bag.  No one knows how long this climate will last or when a state of emergency happens.  It’s always better to be armed with necessary stocks at home like:

Food

Bread -gives the carbo load you need in replacement of rice.  Rice still has to be cooked.

Biscuits/cookies –alternative to bread, sugar helps relieve pangs of hunger

Candies –the sugar will help ease acidity in case there are more eminent task at hand than eating

Canned goods (like corned beef, Vienna sausage, tuna, pork and beans, chili con carne, corn) –not easily perishable and ready to eat

Instant Noodles –are also ready to eat although it’s best enjoyed cooked.  Snack on the noodles like crackers.

Bottled water

Carbonated drinks/Coffee

Items

Flashlight and Batteries

Thick Blanket/Comforters/Mattress Covers/Pillows

Jacket/Sweaters/Socks/Caps/Rain Boots

Radio and Batteries

Umbrella/Tents/Mono Block Chairs

Towels

Knife, Candles, Matches, Plastic Wares, Plastic Utensils, Napkins, Plastic Bags

Empty plastic bottles

Lifesavers/Old Tires/Styrofoam

Big Pails

Slippers

Antiseptic/First Aid Kits/Medicine bags

**If possible, keep all items in one area or fit everything in one “EMERGENCY BAG,” so it’s easy to locate and grab.

2. Unplug all appliances (particularly on the first floor) and keep a watchful eye on refrigerator and electricity outlets.

3. Always have extra cash handy.  ATMs might not be available or accessible.

4. Improvised flotation device can be made out of empty Coke/Pepsi/C2/Juice/Water plastic bottles.  Just securely tie the plastic bottles together (4-10) and it can work as a flotation device.

5. If possible, CHARGE all equipment necessary, emergency light, mobile phones (for communication), etc.

Storm Pepeng Brewing in the North

It’s raining again and the worst is feared.

It hasn’t even been a week and another tropical storm is reported to enter the Philippine territory October 1, 2009, Thursday.  Accroding to PAGASA, Bagyong Pepeng, international codename “Parma,” will likely hit the Batanes group of islands and extreme northern Luzon and parts of Visayas and Mindanao… and it could develop into a super typhoon.

“Yung worst scenario, tatama dito sa may Batanes-Taiwan area, sa extreme Northern Luzon (Our models show the worst scenario is that it will hit the Batanes-Taiwan area, in extreme Northern Luzon),” Pagasa forecaster Gener Quitlong said in an interview on dzBB radio.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, Pagasa said Parma (Pepeng) was estimated at 1,110 km east of Mindanao with maximum sustained winds of 75 kph and gustiness of up to 90 kph.

“Extreme Northern Luzon, Eastern Visayas and Eastern Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.”

As of 10am, Typhoon Pepeng is now in the Philippines, currently 900kms east of Surigao City, which carries with it, strong winds.   The 5-day forecast reveals that the height of the typhoon will hit around Saturday afternoon, October 3, 2009.

UPDATE: Some Plurk messages read: Hail Storm in QC (Oct. 1- 12:00nn).

“Friday (October 2) is a REGULAR WORKING DAY. But massive cleanup will push through in affected areas.”

-Gibo Teodoro

Manila News Today: Sept 30, 2009 – Classes Suspended for One Week

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) said Wednesday that classes at the tertiary level in Metro Manila and other areas placed under a state of calamity will remain suspended until Saturday.  Classes resume on October 3 (for Saturday classes) and October 5 (for Monday classes).  Colleges and universities are being encouraged to become centers that will receive aid and donations to help those affected by Typhoon Ondoy.

In other news, Typhoon Ondoy or international name Ketsana is now in Vietnam, which is across the South China Sea from Philippines.  Ketsana hit central Vietnam yesterday and death toll is now at 39, and caused close to 170,000 people to leave their homes.

The World Meteorological Organisation said in Geneva a new tropical depression had formed east of the Philippines Tuesday, although it was too soon to predict whether it would form a cycle that would reach the archipelago.

Ateneo and DLSU Face Again in Round 2 This Sunday

It was only last Sunday when the Araneta Coliseum was filled to the brim with ADMU and DLSU fanatics.  The Ateneo de Manila University won that game against De La Salle University 76-72 in overtime.  This coming Sunday, watch out for another tight bball battle as the two school favorites face each other again in the second round of the 72nd University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s basketball tournament.

While Ateneans usually wear blue and La Sallians green, both schools wore yellow as a sign of national unity during its first meet to also honor the late former president Corazon Aquino.

Ateneo Blue Eagles Flight Deferred by UP Fighting Maroons

The first win of the UP Fighting Maroons (68) only meant the first loss for the Ateneo Blue Eagles (58) at the UAAP Season 72nd elimination round last Sunday, July 26.  After three straight losses, UP finally mustered a win and at the hands of a formidable foe this season.  Ateneo is on top of the standings with three wins in a row.

Former Ginebra player and current UST coach was also very proud of his boys when the oldest school in Manila gathered the first win against UE since 2006.  The UST Tigers pulled off a victory against the University of the East Warriors, 92-88, to inch up in the standings and claim the number #2 spot with 3-1 records, same as FEU Tamaraws.

Ateneo clinched its third straight victory against the UST Tigers, 93-77 in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Philsports Arena the other day.  Prior to the match-up, both schools held an unbeaten record in the first round of the recently opened season.

The 5’6” Eman Monfort gave a big showing when its main man Rabeh Al-Hussaini struggled with foul trouble.  He had a very impressive game clutching 20 points that includes explosive six treys.

With a very good start this season, the Blue Eagles seem to not miss Chris Tiu’s presence on the bench.  Tiu has already completed 5 seasons of UAAP and is slated to move on.  Ateneo is gunning for a second championship with Rabeh Al Hussaini leading the pack.  Hussaini was last season’s MVP and was a powerful element in the championship win.

DLSU this year will be missing the sparkplug JV Casio and another frontliner in Rico Maierhofer.

Friday Night with the Engineers

Eric and Pat are two of my longtime friends.  These two are a tandem in college and I’m glad to see that their bond is still as strong as it was back in the day.

I know the love life of these two from college days to post-college days.  Let’s just say that I’ve never seen these two loveless.  There’s always AT LEAST one woman in their lives.  At a certain point, there was even a girl in between these two!  (Ahem, what do the letters F, A, and Y mean to you guys?)

Trying to call Fay (currently at Irvine, California)

Trying to call Fay (currently at Irvine, California)

Friday night, we had dinner at Jay-J’s at Ortigas Home Depot.  Since we haven’t seen each other in almost a year, we were the loudest table inside the restaurant laughing and bantering.  Patrick tries San Miguel Double Chilled for the first time.  We were supposed to hang at Bugsy’s at the City Golf Plaza but all 4 tables were RESERVED and while I like their food and wanted my friends to try it, I didn’t want to sit outside so we settled for Jay-J’s.

Maddy joined us in the dinner and I was happy to spend time with her because I haven’t seen her in two weeks!  So it was a party of four, Madz, Pat, Bubba and me.

Mr. Lopez was L-A-T-E and I didn’t let him hear the end of it!  Just a minute after arriving (he hasn’t even sat down), he excuses himself to answer a phone call.  He went to his car where it was quieter.  We transferred to another table (located at a discreet corner) while he was outside.  The wait staff as if on queue cleared the table we vacated.  2 minutes after, Eric goes to the table bewildered that it’s empty.  If it weren’t for Pat’s shaking shoulders, we would have drifted to oblivion and Eric would think that we had left him.  Busted.

30 minutes into the drinking spree and Eric excuses himself again to answer another phone call.  We put hot sauce on the rim of his beer.

I’ve never had a more serious drinking sesh discussing religion, faith, weddings, and careers.  We grilled Pat about not going after his board license.  After much discussion, I realized that the dreamer Pat I knew in college has his feet deep in the mud of everyday reality.  His perspective is quite different now and although we have differing opinions,  I like the tenacity he now has in pursuing his dream of starting a family life soon.
