Rotating power outages is scheduled again in Luzon that may last from four to five days.  National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said that two electricity plants in Luzon are currently down due to a boiler leak.  Hence, Metro Manila will have to deal with another series of blackouts this week until the two plants are restored to normal operation.

Nothing can start the year right than sponsoring kids (from Payatas affected by Typhoon Ondoy) to a tour in Ark Avilon Zoo.  Bubba and I sponsored three kids between us for Chai’s outreach project for Junior Chamber International Makati Princess Urduja (lady chapter of Jaycees).

Other than the small sponsorship/contribution, we also volunteered to spend our Saturday with the kids in their numerous activities.

Christmas is for Kids

Many say that Christmas is truly for kids. It’s hard to disagree when you find yourself in a toy store just to get your child, inaanak, pamangkin, or even your little neighbor a gift that’ll make them smile. However, some kids are not as fortunate as our young loved ones.

Through Enervon, you can make a difference for the kids of the Virlanie Foundation. All you have to do is text REFILL to 2948. The proceeds from every text message you send are donated to the foundation. Every text message also makes the Enervon Smiley billboard on PET building, EDSA shine brighter. Let’s not forget the reason for the season and share the happy to the kids of Virlanie Foundation. Keep texting, mag-refill with Enervon and share the happy.

And if you lend a helping hand, you might even grab an MP3 player along the way! Each text you send gets you more chances of winning a Philips Go Gear Mix MP3 player.

Spread the word. Share the happy!

The Giving Cup at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf

Year 2009 passed so quickly that I didn’t even notice that it was already end of the year.  Usually, we cap off the end of the year with the Yuletide season, which is the season of giving.  Last year, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf launched the 12 Cups of Advocacy campaign that opened the very spirit of giving

This year, they’re doing it again and this time, they have doubled the cause organizations they want to help out.  Everyone has a cause they cherish–the environment, kids, animals, the list goes on. And this Christmas, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is allowing you to celebrate Christmas and give back to the community with the launch of their holiday program: Give in to Giving: 24 Cups with The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.  Instead of just extending the Christmas giving to friends and families, you can now heighten the “sharing” experience by giving to someone who is a complete stranger to us.  The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf recently sponsored an advocacy fair where the public can know more about these various groups and beneficiaries and ways in how they can help.

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf has earmarked a portion of beverage sales for 24 community advocacies, each with its own unique approach and all of which have come onboard for this holiday program. With the various calamities that have befallen the country in recent months, it is important that we come together and help each other out in our own little way. Your initial contribution may seem like a drop in the bucket now, but in time, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf assures its customers that the percentage from every cup sold will be going back to a community in need –so every drop in the bucket is precious and appreciated. And it is everyone’s hope that in time, that bucket will overflow with the generosity of CBTL patrons like yourself who surely have a cause they are passionate about.

Each purchase can help empower someone to do good for fellow Filipinos. Information about Give in to Giving: 24 Cups with The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf can also be found online at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Facebook page detailing specific branches of The Bean where you can be part of the program.  Everyone who gives in to giving will be given a Christmas treat as a way for The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf to thank you for your generosity and donation certificates are also available for purchase.

It’s time to give a warmer and more soulful meaning to sharing this season–toast to your blessings as your giving cup of coffee or tea eases away your worries and contributes to rebuilding someone’s home.

 ——————————————————

I’m also proud to say that Bubba is spearheading a “project for a cause” this Christmas.  From planning to recruiting to execution, Bubba is in charge of the logistics.  I want to thank ahead friends who have already pledged 3 hours of their day on December 20 to help out Bubba with the Virlanie Foundation kids.

Volunteers are very much welcome.  Please email me at betweenbites@gmail.com

A Run for the Pasig River

November 8, 2009.

My eyes fluttered open at 430 AM because it was the day of the Pasig Run.  Our company registered for the 42K relay marathon.  “Ms. Susan” volunteered my participation and I couldn’t decline.  Anything extra I can do for the team would be my pleasure –plus it being for a cause to save Pasig River, I can’t find any better reason to join.

It was a fund-raising event for the rehabilitation and restoration of Pasig River.

The running group had a preliminary meeting and the runners were free to choose the points they wanted to take.  I volunteered for point 11 to point 12, from Rockwell entrance gate along JP Rizal street to Robinson’s Pioneer.  It was the only point I was really familiar with.  Unbeknownst to me, it had an uphill stretch.

There was a point in time where I was a total gym buff.  After work, the ritual is to go to the gym 3-4 times a week.   At times, I’d even go during lunch break just to get a quick workout and get my adrenaline pumping.  Running the treadmill and boxing were my favorite.  I also enjoyed lifting weights as long as my trainer was there to assist.  Interestingly, I haven’t gone to the gym since the start of 2009.  It’s been almost a year since I last did any workout.  I think I can attribute that to burnout and mental/emotional stress at work.  De-stressing at the gym used to work but I feel so drained sometimes that it also manifests physically.  Therefore, I generally do not have energy to burn at the gym.

I didn’t have any practice run at all.  It was literally my first exercise of the year.  I arrived at Point 11 at 530 AM, 40 minutes earlier than my supposed schedule, so I can run around, warm-up and stretch.  It was tough, like waking up a polar bear during hibernation.  I couldn’t get my vigor going.

635 AM, 25 minutes later than my expected run, my teammate appears and he accompanied me during my run since 2KM felt so short for him.  I paced myself and didn’t attempt to outrun anybody.  My teammate was 5th to arrive at my station, which means there were more than a dozen of people (at least that’s what it looked like when I left) waiting for their relay tag at the station.  Admittedly, I brisk walked the uphill part of the run.  I know that I’m going to be out of breath if I pushed it.

I think I finished my run in 11-12 minutes but I can’t be too certain since I didn’t have a watch.  What I was certain was, my heart felt like it was going to burst even though I cooled down.  The chest pain was piercing but it eventually vanished after a few minutes.  Thank goodness that the team left for the next runner and did not see –or that would have been quite embarrassing if I wasn’t able to control the pain and started wincing there.

Despite that, it was such a good workout and a great event to participate in.  The Pasig run marked my very first workout of the year.  It was also awesome to perspire that much again.  Other than cooking, I once again recalled how therapeutic running could be.

Our group finished the 42K relay in 4 hours 13 minutes, not bad when the estimate is 5 hours.  Mizuno ruled the 42km relay race with Army second and PNP Special Action Force third.

8 to Educate Campaign and the Virlanie Foundation

I’ve written before that a child’s smile can make a world of difference.

My sister Joyce will forever have a child’s smile.  And that makes me lucky.  She makes me look differently at the world.

There are hundreds/thousands of children out in the street.  How can WE make a difference to their world?

Children’s Month draws to a close in the Philippines and we’re reminded of the importance of education in the lives of the country’s children. Virlanie Foundation, Inc and eight high-end restaurants in Serendra and along Bonifacio High Street in Global City, Taguig have partnered on a new campaign to highlight education for those who perhaps need it the most: street children.

From now until December 31st, 2009, eating at any one of the eight participating restaurants will help educate a street child. Arama, Cav, Chelsea, Cupcakes by Sonja, Fu, Healthy Kitchen, Sentro 1771 and Xocolat will make a donation to Virlanie for every designated menu item ordered. Eager to participate in the campaign, the staff of each restaurant has been learning about Virlanie and its eight educational initiatives.

Chelsea’s Mac and Cheese

Fu’s Dimsum Platter

Sentro 1771’s Chicken

Sentro 1771’s Catfish Adobo Flakes

Xocolat’s Organic Cacao Drink

I personally like Sentro 1771, Fu and Chelsea and will definitely visit these places, dine there and order the food listed to help them donate.

Virlanie and its campaign partners are keen that concern for education extends beyond mealtimes and they’ve made it easy for patrons to support the education of a street child from only PHP800 per month.

Virlanie Foundation is a private non-sectarian child-caring institution in Manila. Its cares for street children who are abandoned, abused, made to work and are found living in the streets. They’re welcomed into its homes. Annually it cares for more than 300 children in its 12 homes and last year cared for 700 more through its outreach programs.

Support for Virlanie’s cause comes from many quarters. For a year already, world famous singer Billy Crawford, has been the foundation’s Goodwill Ambassador. Recruited by founder Dominique Lemay, Billy has seen Virlanie’s work up close: “I visited the homes and it’s really impressive how these kids are being taken care of. It’s all year round, not just for the Christmas season.” Billy freely admits that “I wouldn’t be who I am today if I hadn’t been ‘in need’ at some point in my life… and it’s on those crucial times when any helping hand is always a blessing.” Billy understands the importance of education and backs Virlanie on its newest campaign to come to the aid of the city’s most vulnerable children.

Miss Universe 2009 Winner

Miss Venezuela won the 2009 Miss Universe crown giving a back-to-back title to their country.  It is also Venezuela’s sixth time bagging the coveted beauty crown since the pageant’s creation.  Very young at 18, Stefania Fernandez, dressed in a flowing tiered red evening gown, jumped in joy (rather not so gracefully) with fellow Miss Venezuela 2008 winner.  As the crown was passed from one Venezuelan beauty to the next, the two cheered and teetered in elation that made the crown briefly fell to the floor.

Personal bet Dominican Republic Ada Aimee de la Cruz was the first runner up.  Dominican Republic had the toughest question being asked whether or not HIV test should be mandatory.  Another personal bet in the top 15 didn’t make it to the next cut, Miss South Africa.  Our Filipina bet didn’t also make it to the Top 15 cut.

The other finalists were Miss Kosovo, Droga Ganusha; Miss Australia, Rachael Finch; and Miss Puerto Rico, Mayra Matos Perez.  Miss China, Wang Jingyao, was named Miss Congeniality and Miss Thailand, Chutima Durongdej, won Miss Photogenic.

The new Miss Universe is from the city of Merida in the west of a beauty-obsessed South American country where hard-fought pageants are something of a national sport, with contestants widely dissected by the public and the media.

If there was one gripe about the whole worldwide-televised event, it’s the production.  The prestigious pageant included musical performances by Flo Rida (whose music I listen to and like but it felt inappropriate to have him sing in the pageant with a background of “glamorous/model” women clad in bikinis jump in Hip Hop music), Heidi Montag, David Guetta and Kelly Rowland.

Michael Jackson’s Doctor Investigated

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents and LAPD detectives searched the residence and office of Conrad Murray, each location a week apart.  Murray is Michael Jackson’s doctor who is believed to have given Jackson a lethal dose of anesthetic Propofol.

Propofol is used to induce unconsciousness in patients ahead of major surgery.  In hospitals, only a trained anesthesiologist is allowed to administer the drug under strict monitoring conditions.

TMZ.com reported that Murray had told police in an interview he gave Jackson Propofol via an intravenous drip.  The website reported police believe Murray may have fallen asleep while the drug was being administered, and awoke to find the singer already dead.

If Murray did inject Jackson with Propofol negligently, he can be charged with homicide.

The federal agents and police came to his office a week earlier with a search warrant seeking evidence for the “offense of manslaughter”

The LA Coroner’s office reported that the toxicology result is due by the end of this week.

A Michael Jackson movie could hit theaters by the end of 2009.  Rumor is Sony Pictures is willing to pay the 50-million dollar deal for worldwide rights.  AEG Entertainment, the company who owns the 80-hour material showing Michael Jackson rehearsing for his planned series of comeback concerts, had previewed the footage to different Hollywood studios.   The television rights are up for bidding at $10 million.

Kenny Ortega, the choreographer for the King of Pop’s “This Is It” concerts might direct the movie.  He is also famed for the hit film, “High School Musical.”

We’ve seen a few clips of the rehearsal footages but that’s only a morsel compared to what AEG has in their possession.  The footage released last July 2 showed the international pop superstar practicing a song-and-dance routine at Los Angeles’s Staples Center two days before his death.  The footage shows that Jackson had been in good health prior to the day he died.

Jackson was found barely breathing on June 25 at his rented Los Angeles mansion.  A final cause of death has not been revealed as coroners await the results of toxicology tests.

Michael Jackson Memorial –Most Touching Moment

Millions of people all over the world stayed tune to the live coverage of Michael Jackson’s public memorial.  20,000 people flock to Staples Center, Los Angeles to celebrate the King of Pop’s life.  Family and friends of Michael Jackson remembered his contribution to the music and to the world.

Brooke Shields expressed her breaking heart as she remembered her younger moments with Michael Jackson, as well as Berry Gordon, founder of MoTown Records, Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant, Stevie Wonder.

The most touching moment for me during the memorial is when the whole family of MJ was onstage and Paris Jackson, one of Michael Jackson‘s three young children, and spoke about her late father.  With Janet Jackson on her side, she broke down saying that her father is the best father imaginable… her voice cracked as well as her heart when she expressed her love for her father.

Growing up under shades, blanket, masks, Michael Jackson made efforts to protect his children’s faces from the paparazzi for more than a decade.  But on Tuesday, in front of an audience of thousands at the Staples Center and millions more around the globe, 12-year-old Michael Joseph Jr., known as Prince Michael; 11-year-old Paris-Katherine; and 7-year-old Prince Michael II, known as Blanket clutching a Michael Jackson doll, sat in the front row, taking in their father’s memorial service at Staples Center.

The ceremony’s significant spotlight was on Paris addressing the crowd while fighting back sobs.  She breaks down in public in remembrance of her dad as millions of fans’ heart mourned with her.

“Ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine,” she said, her tiny voice cracking. “And I just wanted to say I love him — so much.”

Another tearful moment was Jermaine Jackson singing a song for his brother.  Viewers all over the world were stricken with emotion when the elder Jackson who was in tears performed his brother’s favorite song, “Smile.”

The group performed “We are the World” on the stage to honor Jackson’s role in bridging races.

Jackson sold an estimated 750 million copies of his album.  Only Elvis Presley and the Beatles are within this record.

The Battle for Michael Jackson’s Estate Continues

Jackson’s public memorial is scheduled on Tuesday in Los Angeles, California.  Ticket winners started retrieving their passes to the Staples Center ceremony.  More than 1.6 million people registered for the free entrance tickets.  From the registered million, only about 9,000 names were picked.  The ticket allocation is two per person.  Email notifications were sent to the lucky fans that scored the hottest ticket in town.  Sadly, some were selling their much-coveted tickets on Ebay starting at USD 3,000.

The list of participants at the memorial includes Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, Kobe Bryant, Brooke Shields, Motown founder Berry Gordy, Lionel Richie, John Mayer, Usher, Jennifer Hudson and Martin Luther King III.

While the memorial organizers, Los Angeles police and Michael Jackson fans are busy in the upcoming public memorial at Staples Center, the battle for the King of Pop’s estate continues.  Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff ruled against the request of Jackson’s mother to be put in charge of Jackson’s estate.  The judge granted Michael Jackson’s longtime attorney, John Branca and music executive and family friend, John McClain to oversee the pop singer’s estate for now.  Based on the 2002 will that surfaced recently, Jackson wanted the two to administer his estate.

Jackson died June 25, deeply in debt.  But a court filing estimates that his estate will be worth more than $500 million.  His assets are supposed to be for a private trust.  Michael Jackson owned a 50 percent stake in the massive Sony-ATV Music Publishing Catalog, which includes music by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Lady Gaga and the Jonas Brothers.

The family also asked if Jackson’s mother, Katherine can co-administer the estate with Branca and McClain to ensure that there is no conflict of interest since the two also has involvement in Jackson’s other shares.  They also wanted more time to see if another would emerge and to accommodate Jackson’s memorial service.  The judge however denied the request.

The judge further grants Branca and McClain several powers over the estate, including the rights to negotiate a settlement with concert promoter AEG Live over refunds for Jackson’s canceled London shows.

Michael Jackson’s life and legacy will be memorialized publicly at the Staples Center, Los Angeles, California.  People all over the world are organizing memorial services as well at their own locals to pay tribute to the King of Pop not only as a performer but bearer of a good heart.

The Man in the Mirror, Michael Jackson Dies at Age 50

Legendary music icon Michael Jackson was found dead at his Los Angeles home, Thursday.

The King of Pop, the biggest celebrity world over, was suspected to have died of cardiac arrest.  The Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to a call placed around 12:30pm.  The responding paramedics performed CPR trying to revive the star (ET has an exclusive photo).  He wasn’t breathing when he was found and was immediately rushed to the UCLA Medical Center in LA.  The cause of Jackson’s death is still sparse and uncertain.  Some reports speculate that it might have been an overdose of prescription or certain substances.  Michael Jackson didn’t have any symptoms of cardiac problem or any heart illnesses and resuscitation would have been able to revive himThis sudden tragic death shocks all music fans and there is outpouring of sympathy for the loss of Michael Jackson.

Coincidentally, Jessica Zafra wrote in her column in the Philippine Star a Michael Jackson feature today.  On Larry King Live and Anderson Cooper, Michael Jackson’s friends sends their deepest sympathy, Quincy Jones, Randy Jackson, Sheryl Crow, Cher, among others.  Donna Sommer will dedicate her concert to Michael.  Madonna says he was one of the greats and truly an inspiration to her music as well.  I wonder how Macaulay Culkin and Chris Tucker feels.  They were pretty close to Jackson.

Jermaine Jackson, Michael Jackson’s Brother, with a heavy heart faced media at a press conference releasing the cause of Jackson’s death.

Michael Jackson first rose to stardom in the late 1960s as the lead singer of the Jackson 5.  He was that little gifted boy with so much energy performing with the music group that he formed with his four older brothers.  Their famous hits include “ABC” and “I’ll Be There” that has so many renditions from other artists.

The 1982 album “Thriller” is the best-selling album of all time having sold over 50 million copies worldwide.  The much famed album includes top charters “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” and the most recognizable song to the world, “Thriller.”  Usher, Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake music are from Michael Jackson’s influences.

Jackson’s career started to tarnish with a series of scandals.  From his universal popularity in the 1980s, his stardom started to decline with a series of surgically altered appearance.

Michael Jackson popularized so many dance moves such as the moonwalker, pulling up the pants and the crotch-grabbing dance moves.  Justin Timberlake’s voice reminds me of Jackson’s high-pitched voice that is punctuated with squeals and titters.  He was the ultimate performer, if not the best dancer… King of all Generations and probably all genres for me… He was admired for his songs but Michael Jackson was also very instrumental in uniting Black and White together.  The soulful lyrics of They Dont Care About Us, Heal the World, Boogeyman, Man in the Mirror, Black and White transcends across nations.  Someone said that Michael Jackson’s death is like passing of an era.  I totally agree.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of the King of Music, Michael Jackson.  He was an all-out performer and has changed the music scene.  My bucket list includes watching a Michael Jackson concert.  I was so ecstatic to learn that he was doing a final run of concert series in Europe starting with London.  There were even talks that he might do one in Asia.  There are only three legendary icons for me, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson (and probably Beatles as a group).  The only female counterpart I can think of that is on the same level is Madonna (who is also in my bucket list of performers I want to watch).  They are the only artists that really made such enormous impact that shifted music landscape.  His legacy in the music industry and the inspiration his creativity brought will remain in music fans’ hearts generation after generation.

Skiing Accident Takes Natasha Richardson

Natasha Richardson, wife of Liam Neeson, who won a Tony-winning performance in a stage revival of “Cabaret,” died Wednesday at age 45.  Career highlights included the film “Patty Hearst,” “Parent Trap” and Maid in Manhattan.”

Alan Nierob, the LA-based publicist for Richardson’s husband Liam Neeson (who starred in the recently released action-thriller Taken), confirmed her death in a written statement but did not give details on the cause of death for Richardson.

“Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha,” the statement said. “They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time.”

Richardson is believed to have suffered a head injury when she fell on a beginner’s trail during a private ski lesson at the luxury Mont Tremblant ski resort in Quebec.  She was still able to walk after the fall, but complained of headache moments later before eventually passing out.  She was hospitalized Tuesday in Montreal and later flown to a hospital in New York City.  Family members had been seen coming and going from the New York hospital where Richardson was reportedly taken.
