Flapjacks Returning Favorites

When we think of Flapjacks, one picture comes to mind –stacks of golden yellow light and fluffy pancakes all ready to be smeared with butter, whipped cream and bathed in glistening maple syrup.  We imagine hunky uniformed and expert “Flapjacks” men who flip and flap the pancakes into perfection.  But there is more to Flapjacks that just deliciously stacked signature pancakes and breakfast combos.

Their breakfast meals and items are available at any time of the day –whether at the crack of first sunlight, or when the sun is at its highest peak or when it’s about to kiss earth goodnight.  If you are craving for other fares, Flapjacks seasonally changes their menu to introduce new dishes that can stop a strike on your bored palates.

In 2008, I thought they still had a limiting menu but Flapjacks has long improved on the items they can offer.  And while they keep patrons’ palates refreshed every now and then, some look for Flapjacks dishes that have become their favorite.

Mango Exotica PHP 325 (Regular)

The colors of the salad ingredients are vibrant and inviting from mango wedges to dried cranberries and raisins, almond chips, refreshing greens and the white-brown balance of croutons and chicken.  The crunch of the fresh vegetables and spikes of mellow sweetness from the berries and nutty taste spell SPRING on a plate.

The mango vinaigrette was light and had the right sweetness and acidity.

Parmesan Chicken Wings PHP 255

My friends, particularly Richard and Irene of www.talesfromthetummy.com, tease me that it is my “chicken wings” season again (having eaten the mango habanero chicken wings of B&T Mexican Kitchen and finishing almost the whole basket, despite being “FULL” and on a “diet.”  GOSH, now I’m craving for those wings.  You should try it).

I love all things chicken wings and Flapjacks Parmesan wings are one of the best Parmesan versions I have tasted so far.  I’d probably rate it Top 2 with the top spot going to Wingman’s lemon parmesan wings followed by Flapjacks closely behind.  The success of the wings rely heavily both on the crispiness of the skin and the actual glaze of the sharp Parmesan cheese which Flapjacks nailed on the spot.  It has that buttery taste but nothing overpowering.  Their Parmesan chicken wings are nowhere oily or dripping butter. Trattoria Gourmets

April 14, 2010

Last Wednesday night, Bubba and I were at Shangri-la Mall to catch dinner and a movie.  We were both really tired from work.  It’s been a long week at work actually.  Unfortunately for Bubba, I was in a semi-“bratinella” mood that evening.  My energy was extremely low and I didn’t have an appetite for eating (yes, a phenomenon) or to watch a movie.

After some persuasive affection, he was able to finally convince me to eat.  Choice that evening: Trattoria Gourmets.  I know this restaurant has been here since I was in college.  If I remember it right, this was the restaurant Grace and Mark (two great friends I have in High School, my best friends) and I ate at then.  Grace and Mark ordered food while I said I was “full” because I just ate.  Conversations ensued.  At the end of the meal, both of them ate only half and I ended up eating on my own the other half of their orders wiping out the dishes.  Both of them kept laughing and teasing me that it’s “scary” to eat with me when I’m “full.”

On the Table

Pasta Vongole PHP 245

Clams in white wine, garlic and olive oil

Margherita Pizza and Gourmet Supreme Pizza (Half and Half) PHP 355

Half tomato, cheese and basil (my favorite) and half sundried tomato, basil, olives, zucchini, tomato and cheese

We enjoyed our meal but Bubba, after one bite, didn’t touch the Pasta Vongole anymore because the smell reminded him of the pasta an officemate once gave him that made him and another officemate throw up hours after.  He suspects it to be spoiled.  Gah.  Pasta Vongole of Trattoria was relatively okay and better with a dash of chili flakes.

April 14, 2010

Judd and Carlos were at my building for a meeting Wednesday.  Judd invited me for lunch.  I was coming from a Solar meeting in Makati but I got back to the office just in time, 12nn.  Judd and ZP arrived at 12:25 PM, a bit late but I didn’t mind because I was reading my office emails since I wasn’t in in the morning.

It was a fun lunch with ZP and I tag-teasing Judd.  Major indigestion caused by Judd’s meeting.  The place was so packed coupled with a very slow service and you have food arriving 35 minutes after order.  We had to inhale our lunch.

Notes: Judd stealing ZP’s sunshine that morning.  Stop YM.  Chicken skin last piece.  Food-inhale 15 minutes.

A Wild Bite Night: Green-themed Potluck Dinner and Rockband

Not your usual themes of Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, kids, Italian.  I had this bright idea of having a green-themed potluck dinner.  We had a special guest on the table that evening.

No, it’s not Oscar the Grouch. 😀

I sent out the message to the group and got a flood of responses.

“Green as in vegetables?”

“Do you follow no-meat Fridays?”

“Like all green food?”

“What meatless Fridays are you talking about?”

I said green would depend on their creativity or excuse.  Green-themed foods can vary anywhere from wasabi-flavored mashed potato, green leafy vegetables, green curry, only-in-DLSU-bought food (school color is green), wasabi-flavored ice cream, nori-wrapped sushi or food, Japanese green chicken, random food served on a green plate, stuffed green chilies, guacamole, avocado salad… there are actually a lot.

I was feeling under the weather Friday morning, March 12 and told the group that I might not be able to make it.  I felt a bit better after work and made it to dinner.  Thing is, half strayed off from the green theme while the other half was still on the plan.  Andrew, who hosted us that evening, actually cooked 3-cheese baked prawns but whipped up a green salad with Japanese dressing (when he knew I was coming) to veer back to the green-theme.

I walked to the door and caught Eric’s eye and exchanged knowing smiles.  He thought I wasn’t going to make it.  Buch, Mari, and Jim were already there when we arrived.  Ann and Andrew were still busy in the kitchen.  Alex and Nico were pretty late because Nico’s meeting took a long time.  There’s a space beside Eric that should be occupied by Made, who was missing in action because she had to attend something.

On the Table

Andrew and Ann’s Green Salad with Kani and Japanese Dressing

Pasto Crostini, Chicken Liver Pate, Salsa, and Spinach Gorgonzola Dip

Bubba and I brought Spinach-gorgonzola dip and crostini chips from Pasto.  Excuse my being sick at that time, I wasn’t able to think of a more creative “green” anymore.  I actually planned to bring wasabi-mashed potato from Ninyo but due to time and travel constraints, decided to forego that idea.

Baked Prawns with Three Cheese

Andrew loves prawns and shrimps and I’m glad because Bubba doesn’t eat those so I don’t usually order them when we eat out and when it’s served at home, we usually dine out.

Fish Dish with Vegetables (I forget the name)

Beef Dish with Vegetables (I forget the name)

Jim said that he particularly asked the dishes to be served with vegetables (in this case, cabbage) to still be within the green theme.  Eric brought sisig sampler with three kinds of sisig.

Somebody brought this but I also forget now what dish this was.  Told you I wasn’t on my element that night.

Alex’s Pasta Puttanesca

Alex and Nico brought yummy Pasta Puttanesca with green noodles!  Yay!

To add to the whole green-feel, Andrew brought out his favorite Schweppes Ginger Ale.

Amidst all the good food, the special guest on the table (literally) occupied the spotlight of the night.  Wild Bite green tea products!!!

Get into the bite

We did a round robin on the items and catch is, you can describe the item with only a word or a phrase/statement.  Nobody else can use the descriptive words already mentioned.  Quite tough but a bit of fun.  Since I was busy taking down notes, I forgot to track who made the most mistakes -so no consequence. 🙂

Wild Bite Clusters

Wild Bite Clusters is a bunch of thin cornflakes coated in white chocolate and green tea.  There’s an earthy taste (probably the green tea) to it that’s very calming.  It has the right crunch on the outside and enough softness to enjoy snacking on these in delight!  It was the clear favorite on the table and the group kept looking for more.

Wild Bite Chocolate

It’s white chocolate that strikes familiarity (a local chocolate you probably tried in childhood) but not quite because of the green tea taste.  People who don’t like overly sweet chocolate, like me, might go for this.  Packaging was pretty nice, perfect as a gift idea for folks who are into green tea or basically will try anything chocolate.  I wonder how dark chocolate will fare blended with green tea.  I love dark chocolates.

Wild Bite Cookies

The group found the Wild Bite Cookies quite the enigma.  The mild taste of green tea is there –which was just right for me because too much green tea flavor might be overwhelming.  As one describes it, the cookie had an identity crisis –some parts were like soft-batch cookies while the other parts were tough like it’s been aired out in the open for too long.

Wild Bite Crisps

It reminded the group of buttery Danish cookies –to some, it had a hint of green tea flavor, to others, GT flavor wasn’t that evident.  Crumbly texture dusted with sugar crystals.  Both Alex and Nico liked it a lot and tagged it at the top of their list.  Alex enjoyed its toasty taste –similar to burnt flavor (I suspect the light bitter flavor comes from the green tea leaves) when you bite into it and then there’s sweetness it releases when you get to the inside.

The Wild Bite Green Tea items were welcomed on the table with different levels of interest.  Big thanks to Chris Chan for letting us try his Wild Bite product line, which started only as a surprise gift for his girlfriend.

After dinner, we headed to Andrew’s attic where their audio/video room is located.  Of course, another Rockband session happened until past midnight.

After Rockband, Eric and Andrew taught Alex, Nico, Bubba and I how to play mahjong.  It’s quite interesting but I’m yet to get the hang of it.  I already know the basics though, yay!!!

Potluck Dinner

Dinner: Cherry’s Spareribs, Pizza and Carbonara.  Jane’s Wrong Pasta, and Madz’ Uncooked Tikoy (operative word: uncooked)

Usual Suspects: Francis a.k.a “Milo Kid,” Madz a.k.a “Princess Maddie,” Chris a.k.a “Bubba,” and Jane a.k.a “Queen La.”

New Recruits: Pearl a.k.a “Si Pearl Na Naman” and Judd a.k.a “Coron Next Day” -Hannah (MIA)

Notes:  Morgan Freeman.  Wrong Pasta.  Delicious Spareribs.

Since Bubba had a late meeting Friday night, I had to ride with Francis from the office to his place.  I bonded with Francis’ lovely (Read: hot) mom on the way and even bragged about the pasta I was going to bring.  The pasta it turned out was cooked the wrong way by the help (since I changed something in my usual recipe).  I was so embarrassed so I promised the mom I would bring her another one (I woke up early Monday to cook the pasta myself).

(After lunch, I went to the office of Francis and handed the pasta to his mom.  I gave Bubba pasta too for his packed lunch and after gym during lunchtime, I also handed one to my newfound friend and gym buddy, Nolan)

Rockband

After many months of waiting, this plan of Francis pushes through (with so much berating from me and Madz!)  We started around 9pm.  But first, the muscles of Francis and Judd had to work because they had to move the flat screen from one room to Francis’ game room.  Bubba claimed injury for not helping.

2009 Christmas Dinner with the Berks

Don’t ask me why Berks.  It’s just is and the name stuck 😉

Flashback:  Berks Christmas Dinner December 27, 2007

Although I was forced to file a leave for December 21 and my last day of work was supposed to be Dec 18, I was still working until Dec 23, Wednesday.  I wanted to cook for the Christmas dinner but I didn’t find the time because I was still in the office until 6pm.  Bubba and I just ordered food for the potluck.  Made looked for my pasta (*meblush*  tee-hee).

What makes this Christmas different is, the group was complete!  Alex has moved back to Manila after a long career stint in Singapore.

As customary, dinner was potluck and the table was filled with so many delicious food!  There were just too many dishes on the round table that it was hard to find space to put everything in.  Alex brought 3-way duck from Luk Foo and it was delish.  I don’t remember who brought Nathaniel’s Buko Pandan but it was also a hit with the group.

Andrew brought Tequila Rose to which I chided Anne to drink the first shot.  Anne is pregnant with their second baby so she couldn’t go anywhere near the alcohol.  Hee-hee!

After dinner, we all gathered near Eric’s beautiful Christmas tree for our exchange gifts.  This year was a bit funny because most got each other gift certificates!  Er-hem, I didn’t start the fire 😉

We’re thinking of doing 2 themes next year, one is White Elephant while the other is the regular exchange gift.  That should be fun.

Year Ender Photos!

Toast to Friendship and a Happy Christmas!

Cheers!  🙂

Didi’s Surprise Pre-wedding Dinner at Chili’s

Thursday Club’s Didi married Edmund last Sunday, July 26, 2009.

Grow old with me!  The best is yet to be.  ~Robert Browning

The Thursday Club planned a simple pre-wedding dinner for Didi last July 16, which of course fell on a Thursday.

Despite the rain and medium traffic encountered, Bubba and I arrived at Chili’s in Greenhills right on schedule.  We arrived an hour early to decorate the venue for the hat set-up and to polish the presentation.  Although the plan was sent out to everyone 1 week or so ahead, there were some last minute fixes because Fran and I had workload up to our necks since June.

Fran and Paul soon followed and each was preparing the “showbiz juice” for Didi researching on Fran’s phone.  The food was also ordered ahead of time.

Didi had no idea that there was such dinner.  We contacted Edmund to participate in the whole thing.  His role was to ensure that Didi will be at the venue at an exact time.

Shiela, Sophie and Phoebe unfortunately weren’t able to make it so it became a party of 6 that includes Fran, Paul, Bubba, Edmund, me and of course, our very dear Didi.  Sab is still in Canada but she sent Fran her video message for Didi that got incorporated in the presentation.

All of us were jittery as we anticipate Didi’s arrival.  Everyone kept a lookout at the window.  A few text exchanges with Edmund and suddenly we see the couple crossing the street in separate umbrellas.  We placed the hats on our heads to appear “inconspicuous conspicuous” and peered secretly to see if Didi was approaching the area.

Didi had this lost look on her face.  And then she recognized Fran.  SURPRISE!!!

We all kept laughing seeing Didi’s non-reactive face.  Finally, she sat down with thoughts blurring in her head.  “I thought Edmund wanted steak and I kept insisting to eat elsewhere.”

After the flurry died down, the program started with “How Well Do You Know Didi” game.  All 4 including Edmund separately answered each paper that had several questions about Didi.  Fran won the game scoring 11 points against Bubba’s 10.

The food was served and we were munching while exchanging stories –our usual Thursday Club habit.

On the Table

Southwestern Eggrolls (2) PHP 255

I didn’t get to try this but Bubba seemed to like it.  Crispy flour tortillas wrapped around smoked chicken, black beans, corn and Jalapeno Jack cheese with red peppers and spinach.  Served with creamy avocado dressing

Bottomless Tostada Chips with Salsa PHP 270

Everyone couldn’t get enough of the chips with salsa and we had about three baskets of chips

Cajun Chicken Pasta PHP 415

Sliced chicken breast on penne pasta with marinara sauce, seasoned tomatoes, fresh basil, Parmesan cheese and garlic toast

Blackened Sole Fillet PHP 285

Spicy fish dredged in peppercorn spice and drizzled with Chipotle ranch dressing.  Served with black beans and pueblo rice.  The fish was cooked perfectly and the peppercorn flavor had the right amount of heat to keep wanting more.  Edmund and I loved it.

Next was the Showbiz Juice bit and since Bubba was first in line, he was the one who shared first.  It was funny because he thought it was the time for the AVP and he missed the queue.  Didi’s favorite magazine is OK!  We thought of sharing showbiz juice gossip that we hoped she still didn’t know.  Too bad that she caught one piece on SNN the other night.

The presentation followed.  Bubba worked on the presentation providing all the technical effects and layout.  I provided the content, which were utterly corny, popcorns almost popped out of the screen.

The last was gift opening and Bubba and I got Didi something from The Pleasure Place, while Fran had the sweetest gift of an OK! Magazine layout personalized with a photo of Didi and Edmund, Bubba and us girls.

It was a hat party but nobody wore the hat during the dinner with all the excitement that bubbled from the onset.  But definitely, we tip off our hats to the then engaged couple for embarking on the road of forever.

Love is Love.

Talking Tongues

Right after the doctor’s appointment last Saturday, we had two restaurant choices to visit, one being an Indian restaurant along Jupiter Street and the other a Chinese-Indonesian restaurant in Salcedo Village.  Talking Tongue won the decision and off we went to LPL Manor along Leviste Street.

Suddenly the rain poured heavily and the winds blew strong.  Inside the car, we saw a lady struggling with her umbrella that turned the other way.  That didn’t stop us from trying out what the restaurant has to offer.

Yellow walls and striped chairs first catch your eye in this laidback restaurant.  There are also some interesting pieces of art scattered on the walls and counter area.  A chalkboard shares their specials for the day.  I noticed Indonesians occupy two tables and the sight of them made the experience almost authentic already.  The anticipation for the food heats up.  “Heat” was definitely the right term.

On the Table

Corn Fritters (3pcs) PHP 72

Battered whole kernels of corn fried to a golden crisp.  I like the crunch of the corn fritters as well as the semi-sweet semi-milky taste to start our meal with.

Perkerdel PHP 30

It was a small baby-fist size potato cake that had a flat texture on the outside but mushy to flaky potato inside.  The moist cake had little red veins to it.  I like it as it is while Bubba needed the sweet chili sauce to add to the taste.

Beef Rendang PHP 288

Most might be more familiar with Beef Rendang drenched with its spicy coating but Talking Tongues’ version of Beef Rendang has dry coating.  Bobby Flay is an advocator of dry coating on his meats in Throwdown.  Surprisingly, even if the dish was a bit drier than usual, the sauce soaked through the meat evenly and discerningly.  There is a generous amount of the spiced Rendang sauce speckled on top of the beef for added flavor.

Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce (8pcs) PHP 300

The chicken satay arrived like an army with the backup of vegetable mix on the side and peanut sauce underneath.  The chicken meat was moist and tender and it was a delight to eat on its own with its grill glaze and garnish of fried spring onions.  If you want to intensify the flavor with some sweet peanut-y sauce, then pour a generous amount of the peanut sauce on top before taking a bite.  I can’t quite decide if it was better on its own or with the sauce as both were wonderfully delicious.

Some people who speak in tongues believe that they are talking in a divine language, often called the language of angels… At Talking Tongues, they speak the language of authentic Indonesian-Chinese cuisine at the heart of Salcedo Village in Makati.

Nama Sakana Japanese Restaurant and Ramen House

The restaurant is tastefully decorated in a modern Japanese minimalist style with passive lighting and cream-colored walls.  Sporting a handsome wood sushi bar at the far end of the restaurant, the comfortable setting begins your journey at this Japanese restaurant that’s building quite a name in the Greenhills area.  A modern Japanese bistro, Nama Sakana, puts the emphasis on fusion and new-style Japanese cuisine at its finest.

Master Chef and co-owner Rolly Ongcoy prides himself in training under Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, the owner of the world famous chain of Nobu Japanese Restaurants in the key cities of the world.  Chef Nobu is the pioneer of modern and new style Japanese fusion since 1994 and his Nobu restaurant in London has been consistently awarded as the top ten best restaurants in the world.

Nama Sakana recently launched the newest addition to their offerings, the Nama Grill, where aromatic chicken yakiniku are grilled.  While the mood on the 1st floor is lively and upbeat with a warm casual yet sophisticated atmosphere, the restaurant also boasts of their stylish bar with subdued lighting and club music at the second floor of the restaurant.  Part-owner Lovely Rivera-Nocom graciously welcomed us at the Nama Bar after the dinner.

On the Table

Green Salad with Seared Tuna PHP 230

Thinly sliced seared Tuna neatly arranged around fresh green salad leaves, topped with shredded radish and carrots drizzled with Onion dressing.  The greens were fresh and had a crunch to it ideal match to the soft velvety texture of the seared tuna.  The semi-sweet-semi sour onion dressing brings the dish together.

Beef Tobanyaki PHP 800

Grilled beef tenderloin that is thinly sliced with assorted mushrooms, broccoli and asparagus with special sauce cooked and served on a hot plate.  Much to the delight, Enoki mushrooms are used in this dish.  Also known as golden needle mushrooms, these are small white mushrooms with silky texture and mild almost fruity flavor.  The tender beef cooked medium rare sits well with the light broth while the vegetables provides varying textures.

Sukiyaki

Premium A Beef PHP 720

Premium B Beef PHP 480

Standard Beef PHP 350

One of my favorite Japanese dishes to order particularly in rainy season like this is a bowl of sukiyaki.  Sukiyaki is the traditional Japanese dish of tender beef slices with mushrooms, tofu, vegetables, and glass noodles in sweet broth.  In Nama, there are three kinds of beef to choose from.  It was a passable dish with scrimpy serving of glass noodles but nothing remarkable, leaving a desire for the usual clash of beefy and semi-sweet broth.

New Style Salmon Sashimi PHP 320

The sashimi was placed in a white plate with special dressing, a single breaded tomato and green stalks as garnish on top.  The salmon was slightly cooked with a hint of olive oil, tasted very fresh but without the rawness sting to it.  The accompanying sauce was mild soy sauce with a trace of vinaigrette.  Fitz really enjoyed this dish along with the unanimous ayes of the rest on the table.

Katsudon PHP 175

Breaded pork fillet with sautéed vegetables in egg served on steaming hot Japanese plain rice.  Katsudon is something that both Bubba and Fran love to order every time they dine Japanese.  Nama’s Katsudon dish passed with flying colors to both Katsudon authorities.

Black Cod Gindara with Sweet Miso PHP 680

Gratinated Gindara fillet served with Nama’s special miso sauce.  The black cod gindara is another favorite as it was both savory and semi-sweet.  The fish was tender and had the desirable flaky flesh.  Not overly cooked making the fish meat mushy, it had the right bite to it.  The fish was fresh and very tasty that every mouthful is savored.  The sweet brown miso sauce on the side heightens the flavor making the experience simply a celebration in every bite.  Personally, the black cod Gindara took the spotlight on the table

Uni Sushi PHP 80

2 pieces of sushi with uni (sea urchin) on top, one of my favorite sushi

California Maki

Japanese Cheesecake PHP 130

A citrus-y melt in your mouth cheesecake topped with cherry and mango slices and drizzled with dulce de leche sauce

Deep Dish Chocolate Cookie PHP 130

Chocolate chip cookie baked in chewy goodness topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream.  The soft chocolate chip cookie was crusty to the bite but soft and chewy on the inside.  The vanilla ice cream adds the sweet milky taste that further softens the dough.  Looking very appetizing, it was sinfully delicious!

The restaurant also offers lunch exclusives available from 11:30 am – 4:30 pm that includes single layer bento boxes with three variations to choose from.  Service was friendly and efficient.

Feast your palate on these sumptuous Japanese fusion and new style dishes at Nama Sakana restaurant.

Thursday Food Club: Pizzeria Toscana

The usual suspects of the Thursday Food Club met yet again last Thursday for dinner.  This time it was Didi’s turn to choose the restaurant and since she was craving for pizza (like we all were after reminiscing about the pizza event we attended the other week), her choice was Pizzeria Toscana.

Bubba and I have eaten here before and liked the comfortable homey ambience.  Like usual authentic Greek/Italian/Persian restaurants where the whole family is involved in the business, Filipino owners Chef Angel Aban and former bank director Anthony Parungao decided to dedicate their time to the restaurant business –a lifelong dream for the two who are equally passionate about food.  I remember that during our first visit, our table attendant who was the son, told us how inspired his parents were about starting this restaurant.

There is a younger boy now who attended to our table and he fancied us with his magic tricks.  He reminded me of “me” when I used to do magic tricks as my “show and tell” project in speech class both in high school and college.  It was cute and he was nice enough to let me show him a trick (I was really rusty but he appreciated it).

On the Table

Pumpkin Soup (2) PHP 150 (?)

Since the dinner schedule was pushed back an hour later 8pm, Bubba and I were really hungry and couldn’t resist taking a bite at home.  And yes, we took more than a bite.  We even nicked the plate.  And so, we didn’t order much this time around.

Didi and Fran both ordered pumpkin soup for their starters.

Pizza Rustica PHP 310

Thin crust pizza with anchovies, pimiento and black olives.

Pasta Salmone PHP 260

Cream-based pasta with smoked salmon.  Fran really loved the pasta.  I took a bite to taste it and it was pretty good al dente cream pasta with bits of salmon.

Gelato Balsamico PHP 70

Even if there was no room anymore, I couldn’t resist not getting Gelato Balsamico.  This was after all the most memorable for me during the first visit… I still love it.  Some might find it weird on their first try ice cream with sour balsamic taste and garnished with slop of mint, but it’s really good and transports me to the mountainous picturesque Tuscany.

Gelato Blueberry PHP 70

Bubba finished this all by himself and didn’t even let Didi, Fran or me try.  Boo.  Selfish.

Thanks Fran for the Baguio pasalubong!

EL’s Birthday at Bugsy’s

Pat obediently following my instructions to reserve a table for 6, indoors and couch area secured us a table at Bugsy’s Tuesday night.  My friend Eric is experiencing Murphy’s Law since the start of the month and the biggest blow was about his work –news that broke only last week.  On top of that, he lost a mobile phone, nicked his Mazda and is currently nursing a forlorn heart.

EL celebrates his birthday every 23rd of June.  What a way to welcome a birthday right?

But like what they say, it’s hard to put a good man down.

EL still celebrated his birthday in tasteful fashion with friends over drinks and good food.

Bubba and I were first to arrive but we were an hour early so we were off to Big Bert’s for a carwash.  We came back to Bugsy’s and found Pat on our reserved table.  Of course, as Eric’s spokesperson, he briefed us with Eric’s mishap in the recent week.

On the Table

Buffalo Tenders (2) PHP 175

Imagine your favorite Buffalo wings with all the tangy spicy goodness without the bones!  No more working out tediously to get the meat out.  In every piece there’s a flake of crispy skin that makes it all the more addicting.  I can eat this all day.  Pat is not found of spicy dishes but he loved this obvious when he wiped out one plate.

The Family PHP 265

I ordered Warren’s Dip and Chips but it wasn’t available so I tried their appetizer sampler, The Family.  The Family was composed of potato wedges, mozzarella sticks (that I didn’t get to try.  *shooting a mean look to Bubba*) and buffalo tenders.

French Fries PHP 150 (?)

Deep Fried Burger Melt PHP 165

Burger meat, cheese in deep fried spring roll

Uncle Moe’s Beef Kebab Plate (2) PHP 130

I had to have my rice and I was craving for beef kebab.  Bugsy’s was nice enough to let us bring in the food from their neighbor and serve it on a plate.  You help your neighbor and you increase both your foot traffic –always good for business.

Margarita PHP 130

I love my margarita.  I find it funny that they served it on a Martini glass.

Arctic Vodka (2)

Bottles and Bottles of Beer PHP 50

There is so much to love about Bugsy’s.  The wait staff is really gracious, speedy and efficient.  You wouldn’t mind hanging out with them on a Friday night.  The food is nothing but delish particularly the mouth-watering appetizers!  Price on the drink list is reasonable.  There are no frills –just straightforward scrumptious dishes, reasonable price and quality service that always please.  It seems to be the homiest hangout spot to enjoy beer drinking with friends, colleagues or sport groups.

Fred and Madz followed afterwards.  It’s been more than 5 years since I last seen Fred.  He still looks pretty much the same except that in this dinner he brought with him MUSCLES.  Every time we look at him, he flexes them muscles.  When he asks for beer from the wait staff, he flexes them muscles.  When he laughs, them muscles flex.

Pat, I know you enjoy our company... but whats with the BIG smile?

"Pat, I know you enjoy our company... but what's with the BIG smile?"

Of course, Pat (as Eric’s VOLUNTARY spokesperson) had to share AGAIN with the latecomers Eric’s misfortunes.  After much sympathy to EL, we know that our presence there is not to sulk with him but to remind him the comfort of having friends around at times like this.  We remind him that as long as there is tomorrow, there is always another day of possibilities.

So we exchanged stories one after the other.  Eric and Pat reminisced about the time there was a swimming get-together at Fay’s house.  My girlfriends (Gina, King and Fay) and Fay’s other girl group were there while I was MIA since my parents didn’t allow me to stay out late during college days.  Then-chubby Fred didn’t bring any swimming attire.  He had to wear Fay’s badminton shorts that were sheer.  We all doubled over laughing.  They both demonstrated how Fred swam that evening like he was playing shark.  Most of the time, he was sitting in one corner playing with Fay’s nephew trying to be unmindful of the beautiful girls that surround him.  It was so hilarious.  Fred evens the score when he tells us about the time Eric was so wasted and the Eng boys bathe him.  He was so smashed that he didn’t know they were playing with his “cockpit where he keeps his gun”.

At this point, Fred was still flexing his muscles as he tells the story.  The other tables were also getting as distracted as we were.

Bubba saw some Xavier friends while Chai walked up to me and surprised me.

We ordered another round of Buffalo Tenders.  It was everybody’s first time there except for Bubba and I.  They really liked the food and that makes me cheery.  The humor and energy were nothing short of an upbeat tempo.  The drinks continue to flow.  We literally laughed our hearts out –it’s been quite a while since my abdomen had this heavy workout.

Little miss bo beep with the Engineering boys

Oh, Fred looks so much like Jake Cuenca when he laughs.  With bigger muscles.  Madz had to take another shot of Arctic Vodka to reluctantly agree.  At this instant, Eric reminds me that it’s his birthday not Fred’s.

Effortlessly, the dynamics in the group bring so much energy to the table conversation.

Bubba and I excused us to go to Barcino and get Eric a cake.  Good thing that Bugsy’s had a birthday candle on hand when we asked for one.  To Eric’s embarrassment, we sang the Happy Birthday song.

It was a workweek and we had to call it a night.  Pat was still raring to continue elsewhere.  Eric and Fred were on board but Madz, Bubba and I had to beg off.  Pat was convincing Madz to go when Eric unintentionally knocked the bottle that drenched Pat’s pants.  I think Pat’s pants absorbed all spill because the red couch he was sitting on was spotless.  That was our queue to get the bill.  We were supposed to treat Eric and split the bill but Pat was insistent on letting Eric pay –how ironically funny.

On the way out, I snatched Fred’s jacket as soon as he stood up.  He stares at the chair for a few seconds and then looks under the table.  He looks at me and said, “Did you see my jacket?”  He looks bewildered and shy, “I think I lost my jacket…” with his voice trailing off.  I rapidly hand off the jacket to Madz from my back.  I asked him, “did you bring a jacket?”  He responds, “Yea, remember you were teasing me that I took it off to show off my muscles when I got in?”  “Really,” I respond biting my lip to keep from laughing.  He had this super worried look on his face that Bubba, Eric, Madz and I tried the darndest to stifle our laughter.  Madz and Pat went out ahead while we wait for Fred to look for his jacket.  He couldn’t resist and timidly asked the waiter if they saw a jacket.  That’s the time I had to tell him and point outside to Madz.

We had such a commanding happy night that it took us another hour to say goodbye.  It was already midnight.

Friday Night with the Engineers

Eric and Pat are two of my longtime friends.  These two are a tandem in college and I’m glad to see that their bond is still as strong as it was back in the day.

I know the love life of these two from college days to post-college days.  Let’s just say that I’ve never seen these two loveless.  There’s always AT LEAST one woman in their lives.  At a certain point, there was even a girl in between these two!  (Ahem, what do the letters F, A, and Y mean to you guys?)

Trying to call Fay (currently at Irvine, California)

Trying to call Fay (currently at Irvine, California)

Friday night, we had dinner at Jay-J’s at Ortigas Home Depot.  Since we haven’t seen each other in almost a year, we were the loudest table inside the restaurant laughing and bantering.  Patrick tries San Miguel Double Chilled for the first time.  We were supposed to hang at Bugsy’s at the City Golf Plaza but all 4 tables were RESERVED and while I like their food and wanted my friends to try it, I didn’t want to sit outside so we settled for Jay-J’s.

Maddy joined us in the dinner and I was happy to spend time with her because I haven’t seen her in two weeks!  So it was a party of four, Madz, Pat, Bubba and me.

Mr. Lopez was L-A-T-E and I didn’t let him hear the end of it!  Just a minute after arriving (he hasn’t even sat down), he excuses himself to answer a phone call.  He went to his car where it was quieter.  We transferred to another table (located at a discreet corner) while he was outside.  The wait staff as if on queue cleared the table we vacated.  2 minutes after, Eric goes to the table bewildered that it’s empty.  If it weren’t for Pat’s shaking shoulders, we would have drifted to oblivion and Eric would think that we had left him.  Busted.

30 minutes into the drinking spree and Eric excuses himself again to answer another phone call.  We put hot sauce on the rim of his beer.

I’ve never had a more serious drinking sesh discussing religion, faith, weddings, and careers.  We grilled Pat about not going after his board license.  After much discussion, I realized that the dreamer Pat I knew in college has his feet deep in the mud of everyday reality.  His perspective is quite different now and although we have differing opinions,  I like the tenacity he now has in pursuing his dream of starting a family life soon.

The Others

I am not the only woman in Bubba’s life.  In fact, he has other “babies,” sometimes with more emotional needs.

Krie, The Albino Ratsnake

Krie is the partner of Skimpy before.  Since Skimpy’s death, Krie is the oldest baby in the family.  Krie has a lot of poise and class that probably were brought about by age.

Boei, The Ball Python

When we were just dating, Bubba couldn’t stop talking about how he wanted to get a ball snake.  Everything is a sign to get a ball snake.  We were at EDSA Shangri-la one time and we see an ad poster of a watch that has the word, “BALL” with a water snake and this is the forth-telling SIGN.  He tries to connect everything as signs that he’s supposed to buy a ball snake.  After a while, I relent and let him be.  There were a few chances where he almost bought one but decided against it.  Finally, the perfect ball snake came our way and I agreed that this is what he’s been dying to have.

Grumpy, The Hognose Snake

This hognose snake was actually a trade-off.  Bubba traded off his two precious skinks for this baby who is throwing a fit all the time.  He’s the crankiest in the bunch.  He bites the hand that feeds him.

GTP, The Green Tree Python

GTP named after George St. Pierre but with a T instead of an S.  I was in protest getting another snake but when I saw GTP’s uber yellow skin, it was so beautiful we both couldn’t resist.  He reached adolescence last year that made his yellow skin turn to green.

Jigsaw, The Milksnake

Of course, men go for the “young.”  This is why this milksnake used to Bubba’s favorite, more than me probably.  Jigsaw is the latest addition in the family, which makes him the youngest.  He celebrated his 1st year anniversary just recently.  He is named after our favorite thriller movie, SAW.

I think though that Boei remains to be his all-time favorite because that snake is really attached to him.  They have this special “bond.”  Boei is also special to me because he reminds me of days when we were just starting out.

Flapjacks -Greenhills

Price Range: PHP 150-250

Operating Hours:

06:00 AM – 11:00 PM          Sunday – Thursday

06:00 AM – 01:00 AM         Friday – Saturday

Flapjacks Greenhills is the new ray of sunshine in Greenhills Theater mall.  With its bright colors and welcoming interiors, people are drawn to take a crack at their dishes.  Thursday night was the scheduled dinner with the girls.  Since we arrived 30minutes earlier, we had time to go around first.  I went to Info Max for a long overdue purchase of a Lowe Pro lens case I can conveniently attach to my small Lowe Pro camera bag.  I had a blue case in mind similar to Ronald’s case, which is slimmer but they don’t have it so I checked their black Lowe Pro cases instead.  After much mulling, I picked my choice, a small black Lowe Pro case (PHP1,700 with PHP200 discount) for my 50mm extra lens.  I still held off on buying though and decided to go back next week.  I have such big control of shopping urges now that even for stuff I need I hesitate greatly.

We arrived first then Sab, Didi and soon after, Fran and Paul followed.  Checking Flapjacks menu, I was surprised to see that it’s so limiting.  There are about 9 choices from their breakfast list while only 6 lunch and dinner specials.  It says though that these specials are “feature of the month,” which can mean that they are still toying with their offerings checking what people like, otherwise they really change their menu every month.  What I highly appreciate is that all prices are inclusive of tax already.

Sab tried their country fried steak (PHP 205) that Bubba was eyeing earlier.  Didi ordered a rack of pancakes and banana (PHP125) while Fran and Paul ordered open-faced tuna melt sandwich (PHP165) and the ultimate breakfast (PHP195).  Between Bubba and I, we ordered open-faced tuna melt sandwich (PHP165), Omelette with everything in (PHP195) and Local Favorite spicy beef tapa (PHP185).

On the Table:

Open-faced Tuna Melt PHP165

Big chunks of tuna on 2 sandwich slices bridged together with a slice of melted Cheddar cheese.  Bubba really enjoyed the big chunks of tuna and reminded him of his mom’s home cooked version.  I on the other hand am not a fan of chunky tuna. I had a few bites and it was okay.

Omelette PHP195

I miss it since I love anything with eggs.  I haven’t eaten anything with egg for quite some time only due to diet constrictions.  Flapjacks Omelette had bell peppers, country sausage, ham, bacon, onion, tomato, mushroom, cheese but you can mix and match depending on your preference.  It was served with 2 toasts.  The dish did not disappoint and I could’ve finished the whole plate if the “incident” did not happen.

Bubba was on to his last tuna melt slice with the cheese slice still intact when suddenly while slicing the bread, dropped the whole plate on his lap and the food on the floor.  Instinctively, I felt so sorry for him coz I know his last “perfect” bite consisted mostly the cheddar cheese, but I gave out fits of laughter, that prompted Didi to laugh too.

Since I felt the lost of the “perfect” last bite, I set aside for Bubba my perfect last bite of omelette.  It still had a big cheese part on top.

Sweet and Spicy Beef Tapa PHP185

I started on the plate but let Bubba finished half of it since he only finished half of his first plate.  I like the sweetness and spiciness of the beef tapa.  It wasn’t tough too and didn’t have that much fat in it.

Because of the incident, Sab shared her FIC incident too.  It was really cute and super funny.  Fran gave us issues of our respective favorite magazines (thanks Fran!).  Although the food was limiting, the conversations over dinner weren’t and I really enjoyed the evening with the ladies.   Flapjacks is located in G/F Theatre Mall, Greenhills.  For inquiries, call 5840638/39.
