Ninak, Asian Comfort Food

You know how you’re surrounded with couple friends, you look around and you’re the third or fifth wheel.  It doesn’t feel that lonely when you are secure of where you are in your life… and if you have a fifth wheel partner named Marco.

Sometime September last year, we headed to Kapitolyo for dinner.  The green signage bearing the name Ninak intrigued us.  Ninak is the Filipino word for rice spelled backwards.  Rice is a staple in Philippine cuisine, even Asia at large, and Ninak offers a variety of it.

The restaurant is under the management of the same brothers who opened Brothers Burger.  They aim to hit flavors close to home so the menu is largely influenced by Asian cuisine.  Upon placing our orders, the wait staff asked us our heat preference as most Thai and Malay cuisines tend to be very spicy.    Other than Filipino dishes, they also offer dishes that our neighboring countries are known for like Vietnamese spring rolls, Chicken Rice, Fish Curry.

On the Table

Green Mango Salad P

Sweet and sour green mangoes tossed in Ninak’s spicy Thai dressing with toasted crunchy peanuts, shallots, red chili and cilantro

This starter was a playground of Thai flavors.  The peanuts’ crunchiness dances with the snaps of the fresh lettuce, onion and sour freshness of the green mango.  Thread carefully since the red chilies could easily spike the heat range.  The spicy Thai dressing was enough to let its presence felt – zesty, sweet and hot, pretty much how I would define myself but my friends would rally against it.

Between Bites Meets Big Better Burgers (BB Meets BBB)

Big Better Burgers is a new fast casual restaurant, serving freshly grilled premium burgers.  Together with the Foodie Club, Wednesday was set as our BBB dinner meet.  We were introduced to Eric Teotico, a former director of TV commercials, who has translated his passion for directing TVC to passion for directing taste in food.  Their first shop opened on October 2008 at the mezzanine floor of Victoria Towers corner Timog and Panay in Quezon City.  Since then, they have launched three more branches at SM North EDSA, SM Fairview and SM Cubao.

Big Better Burgers are made from fresh, one-third pound, pure beef burger patties, specially infused with their own crafted seasoning, grilled and smoked to juicy perfection.

On the Table

Wedges PHP 55

The wedge-cut potato fries were pretty big.  I like the cheddar cheese and dill mayo that were served with it.

Bacon Barbecue Burger PHP 150

1/3 lb. grilled burger, bacon, grilled onion, barbecue sauce

Hahalapeño Burger PHP 147

1/3 lb. grilled burger, jalapeno salsa, cheese, lettuce, ketchup.  This was what I was eyeing but since Peter already ordered it, I went for variety and ordered something else.  Next time I’m at BBB, BB will definitely order the Hahalapeño Burger… 😉

3 Cheese Explosion PHP 165

1/3 lb. grilled burger, mozzarella, quezoloco, cheddar cheese -Bubba enjoyed this a whole lot.

Mushroom Loco PHP 147

1/3 lb. grilled burger, lettuce, quezoloco, button mushrooms in burgundy sauce -perfect for people who love mushrooms

Good news for Green Archers because Big Better Burgers is opening a branch at La Salle Taft University Mall on August 1, 2010 while for the southerners, a franchise branch has opened at Northgate, Filinvest Alabang last June 18.  Get a taste of quality American burgers at Big Better Burgers! 😉

Thanks to Tita Jane (Tukayo) for arranging this dinner and Eric and Chiqui Teotico for inviting us over.

Delifrance Tray Couture | Brothers Burger

Yay!  I won three (3) Delifrance Tray Couture coupons 2 weeks ago, which we used yesterday for dinner prior to watching Nights in Rodanthe at the Podium.

I am an Amelia –French of Emily, lovely is a name such as Amelia… and lovely a mother I wish to be.  The seafood deluxe clubhouse rested so royal on the plate with a portion of pasta arranged neatly next to it.  Between bites of clubhouse and pasta, a drizzle of flavors and texture cascaded like waterfalls.

Because we anticipated that we’d still be hungry after the trays, we ordered pizza as an extra.  Bubba’s order was Henri (P215) while I ordered Amelie (P199).  I liked Amelie better.  The kani sandwich was splendid while I finished the angel hair pasta in 3 bites.  The tomato slush shooter was also a good starter including the toasty breadsticks.  After enjoying the delish tray of full snack meal, I gulped down the Four Seasons that went with the combo.  And popped the chocolate bit in my mouth before heading out.

On to another couture -Brothers Burger

It’s been a while since I last tried Brothers Burger.  I remember Bubba eating here at the Bonifacio High Street branch while waiting for my dinner meeting at Cav to finish.  Bubba invited me out for lunch yesterday, after hopping from one restaurant to another in Metrowalk, Chicken Insal, Iceberg, Carlo’s Pizza, Behrouz, a Korean restaurant and Eat My English, we finally decided to cross the street and eat at Brothers Burger.

Bubba decided on BB because I think he was craving for burger since my burger lunch at Meat Plus, Subic.  We were surprised to find a Rajo Laurel standee in front of the door but upon closer look (and reading) he designed a burger based on his taste.  One of Rajo Laurel’s burgers is called The Bistro (P265) –a burger with caramelized onions, sautéed Champignons, Dijon mustard and Brie, all in all a connoisseur’s delight.  There’s also Ranchero (P265) with onion rings and bacon in smoky barbeque flavor and The Big Island (P265) with grilled pineapple and bacon.  Although I was tempted to try the new offerings, my craving for Blue Cheese won over so I ordered Black Angus Burger with Blue Cheese (P300).  Bubba on the other hand, ordered Ranchero.  Our total bill racked up to about P640 with fries.

I’m glad Brothers Burger finally offered something new in its list of burgers.  Now, there’s more interesting flavors to try at BB!
