Typhoon Glenda and Preparedness

I find it a little strange how people can celebrate escalating winds and storm signals just to have work suspended or canceled. I appreciate holiday from work and would likely do cartwheels every time I get some bit of separation from it, but not at the cost of dangerous weather forecasts since a degree of risk, whether to us or other people, is always attached to it. PAGASA is always scrutinized being a work in progress (aren’t we all) but shouldn’t we all be silently praying that the storm changes direction and never hit any part of the country? Or do we just find satisfaction in proving someone wrong?

PAGASA reports that Typhoon Glenda as of 12pm today is at 40km northeast of Catarman, Northern Samar.

PAGASA advised the public to prepare and take pre-cautionary measures.

PAGASA urges public to constantly monitor weather updates.

PASAGA expects typhoon Glenda to intensify further with likelihood to raise storm signals to Signal #3.

Check Typhoon Preparedness Advisory from time to time.

Below are some practical preparedness tips we sometimes overlook, time to double check:

Keep all your mobile phones, laptops, and other communication means fully charged.

Disseminate information on weather and warning advisory to your family members, friends and colleagues. Check on them and ask them to go home already soonest possible time.

Store an adequate supply of food and clean water. Prepare food that need not be cooked.

Keep flashlights, candles and battery-powered radios within easy reach.

Always keep yourself updated with the latest weather report.

Should you need to evacuate, bring clothes, first aid kit, candles/flashlight, battery-powered radio, food, water, among others.

Typhoon Glenda is expected to hit Metro Manila this afternoon.

Let’s Break Bread with Gardenia Pandesal

I remember when I only had pudgy little hands trying to grip all the hexagon-shaped 2 peso coins while holding our help’s hand on the other walking our way to the town bakery at the corner of the street, I always look forward to that freshly baked pandesal.  Those were the days where life was simpler and all I had to worry was making it look like I took a bath in the morning.  Har har, yea I’m a good con like that.

These days, you rush from one meeting to the next and endless paperwork never seems to leave your table.  That’s what makes me look forward to weekends.  Weekends are the pause we need from the daily grind.  I wake up leisurely stretching my arms as far as I can and look out at my window with a thankful heart to God, taking a longer moment to pray and have a one to one talk with Him.

These are the mornings I can prepare breakfast.  I’ve preferred buying Gardenia Pandesal over the local neighborhood pandesal since it’s easily available in the grocery or any open-all-day convenience stores.   But other than convenience, I particularly love that Gardenia Pandesal is distinctly crusty on the outside yet delightfully soft in the inside.  From a trusted brand like Gardenia that produces the best-tasting bread off the shelf, I can only expect high quality baked bread.  It has this great quality premium taste that makes each bite special.  I love Peanut Butter and the two just go well together.

Gardenia’s pandesal is a soft delight and I paste the creamy and smooth peanut butter on its crusty exterior, taste the lush peanut butter coating and then continue munching to the soft bread inside.  I take a luxurious bite and that morning becomes a champion.  Sealed freshness with a clip to indicate its best before date, Gardenia can be enjoyed by Filipinos any time, any where and any way.

Some safety/survival tips:

1. Stock on food at home, car, office and in your bag.  No one knows how long this climate will last or when a state of emergency happens.  It’s always better to be armed with necessary stocks at home like:

Food

Bread -gives the carbo load you need in replacement of rice.  Rice still has to be cooked.

Biscuits/cookies –alternative to bread, sugar helps relieve pangs of hunger

Candies –the sugar will help ease acidity in case there are more eminent task at hand than eating

Canned goods (like corned beef, Vienna sausage, tuna, pork and beans, chili con carne, corn) –not easily perishable and ready to eat

Instant Noodles –are also ready to eat although it’s best enjoyed cooked.  Snack on the noodles like crackers.

Bottled water

Carbonated drinks/Coffee

Items

Flashlight and Batteries

Thick Blanket/Comforters/Mattress Covers/Pillows

Jacket/Sweaters/Socks/Caps/Rain Boots

Radio and Batteries

Umbrella/Tents/Mono Block Chairs

Towels

Knife, Candles, Matches, Plastic Wares, Plastic Utensils, Napkins, Plastic Bags

Empty plastic bottles

Lifesavers/Old Tires/Styrofoam

Big Pails

Slippers

Antiseptic/First Aid Kits/Medicine bags

**If possible, keep all items in one area or fit everything in one “EMERGENCY BAG,” so it’s easy to locate and grab.

2. Unplug all appliances (particularly on the first floor) and keep a watchful eye on refrigerator and electricity outlets.

3. Always have extra cash handy.  ATMs might not be available or accessible.

4. Improvised flotation device can be made out of empty Coke/Pepsi/C2/Juice/Water plastic bottles.  Just securely tie the plastic bottles together (4-10) and it can work as a flotation device.

5. If possible, charge all equipment necessary, emergency light, mobile phones (for communication), etc.

Foodie Club Series: Legend of India is a Legend of Taste

Next to my favorite cuisine, I think Indian cuisine is one of the most interesting and flavorful fares in the world.  Indian cuisine uses various spices, herbs, and vegetables and fruits sometimes grown only in India.  It also has a wide assortment of cooking techniques.

I was so glad that Gursharan Sethi of Eurosports sent me 5 Indian recipes last week for me to try cooking at home.  But if you’re new at whipping up Indian dishes and want to get your dibs, Legend of India is where you have to march.

Legend of India is the newest Indian restaurant to hit the city of Makati.  I was glad to visit Tuesday night with foodie friends and sample their delectable dishes.

On the Table

Mixed Chevro PHP 100 (small bag) | PHP 200 (big bag)

Wendy, Peter, Bubba and I were the first ones there and while we were busy chatting, we munched on some mixed chevro -mixed grains and spices.  I like it so much that I bought 4 bags to take home with me.  I plan to give Francis, Madz and Pearl one bag each so instead of snacking on chips, they can snack on the mixed chevros.

Pani Puri PHP 130

Pani Puri is a round hollow fried Indian bread, usually served with mint water.  The hollow puri has a small filling of potato, onion, and chickpeas.  The idea is to completely dip the crispy fried bun and let the mint water fill the inside up to the brim.  These are made small enough to fit completely in your mouth since it should be eaten at one time without biting.

Once inside your mouth, taste suddenly explodes as something minty and piquant besiege your taste buds.  It’s an ideal starter to get you enthused for the rest of what Legend of India has to offer.

Chicken Kathi Roll PHP 280

This Romali roti flat bread stuffed with marinated chicken, sautéed onion and Indian spices served on shredded lettuce has less stress on spice and one welcomes the bites of chicken meat pleasantly.

Amritsar Fish PHP 420

Boneless fish marinated in a special mix of Indian herbs and spices grilled to perfection.  The fish had a good coat of the marinade, which makes it quite tasty and gives a crunchy texture while the inside is tender and retains its delicate taste.  Spring up the flavor by squeezing lemon

Chicken Vindaloo PHP 350

Chicken pieces dipped in hot spicy gravy topped with potatoes, tomatoes and chili pepper

Rogan Josh PHP 450

Rogan Josh is an aromatic curry meat dish cooked with a mixture of strong Indian spices where the fat of the meat is usually roasted first in yogurt marinade.  Legend of India tamed their version for our group, which mean it wasn’t intensely hot, but it was still intensely enjoyable paired with the vegetable biryani or the naan.

Sweet Lassi PHP 110

It was my first time to actually drink a whole glass of sweet Lassi.  I’ve tried it before in other Indian restaurants but found the others’ version too sour for my taste.  Lassi is a popular and traditional Indian yogurt-based drink.  I tremendously enjoyed Legend of India’s sweet lassi since it has a perfect blend of yogurt, milk and sweetener.  There’s a bit of tangy taste to it but it mellows down with a frothy sweet milky flavor.  It fully relaxes your taste buds from the spices.

Kadai Paneer PHP 260

Cottage cheese cooked in a traditional kadai masala paste

Plain Naan PHP 110 | Garlic Naan PHP 120

Plain wheat flour bread (and another naan version with garlic) goes well with the thick sauces of the Rogan Josh and Kadai Paneer.  This soft chewy bread is great alternative to rice.

Vegetable Biryani PHP 350

Rice mixed with vegetables and sauce

Masala Papad PHP 60

I remember buying several Papadum snacks at Mustafa Center in Little India in Singapore.  I love the variety of flavor and the crispy texture.  Masala Papad is crispy thin flatbread topped with a relish of diced onions, tomatoes, chili powder and chopped coriander leaves.

Kulfi PHP 120

This is definitely a dessert must-have when dining at Legend of India restaurant.  It’s cold dessert very similar to ice cream but has the taste of delicious milky pastillas.

Craving for great Indian food?  Head over to Legend of India along Jupiter Street and let me know what you think! 😉

Australian Tomahawk Chop of 22 Prime: A Definite Prime Mover

Thursday, I made my way to Discovery Suites to partake in a hearty lunch made even more wonderful with the company at the table.  Stepping into the elevator, I pressed the button with the number 22.  As mentioned in my previous post, the 22nd floor has a comfortable lounge setting as well as a relaxed dining area amidst the lavish surroundings of Discovery Suites shared by Serendipity Lounge and 22 Prime.

The last time Bubba and I were here, we had a lot to order –bisque, their bone marrow dish (served on the bone!), cheese bread and steak.  It’s not surprising to order practically everything on the menu (almost all are favorably satisfying) since 22 Prime is one of our favorite restaurants in the Metro while Chef Rick’s cheese bread tops our list of comfort favorites.  It is a gastronomic oasis found at the heart of Ortigas business district.

Interestingly, having a number of dinners here, I have never visited during broad daylight.  Thursday was a good opportunity to view during daytime the familiar place accustomed to me in low lights.  It has a warm and inviting atmosphere even with the sun’s brightness coming through their beautiful massive floor-length windows.

There’s always a sense of satisfaction whenever we dine here –from knowledgeable, adequate and genuinely friendly service to being served great tasting gourmet food.

22 Prime has always been known for its mouth-watering premium steak selections.  A gargantuan guest will change the “food” landscape by introducing the largest prime steak that will definitely appeal to you and your meat-ravenous comrades.  On June 1, 2010, Discovery Suites’ 22 Prime unveils the Australian Tomahawk Chop and “Verse 1” Specialty Menu.

Two of Australia’s best produce, beef and wine, take center stage at 22 Prime from June 1-15, 2010 for lunch and dinner.  Gourmands with a taste for fine meats can now indulge in a large serving of Tomahawk Rib-Eye Chop, approximately weighing 1 kilogram, grilled to a gourmet’s delight and accompanied with a casserole of perfectly seasoned baby vegetables, a bowl of Caesar salad, and a bottle of Verse 1 Cabernet Sauvignon.

June is definitely a month where there’s more to discover at Discovery Suites as 22 Prime acquaints you with the Tomahawk Chop.

A Tomahawk Chop can be an intimidating piece of meat.  When we came face to face with its raw greatness, the group collectively gasped, obviously wowed by the huge bone-in Australian beef.

Chef David Pardo de Ayala, Corporate Chef of the Discovery group of hotels, explained that such a distinguished piece of meat deserves a flawless preparation from readying the meat in room temperature to the actual grilling of the meat and to its “resting” stage which is absolutely crucial.  The whole ceremony done attentively ensures an evenly juicy, tender, succulent steak at the table.

For those who are less inclined, Chef David Pardo de Ayala was born in Bogota, Colombia and was the youngest winner of Colombia’s the Nestle “Toca de Oro” representing Colombia at gastronomic competitions of continental level.  He traveled to New York to further expand his professional scope and attended the prestigious Culinary Institute of America.  After a number of years as Executive Chef in several five star hotels in Colombia and restaurants in New York, he settled in the Philippines in 2007 and opened the prominent Soleil Restaurant in Makati.

Currently, Chef David functions as Corporate Chef for the Discovery hotel group where he sets the food and beverage directions of Discovery Suites in Pasig City (which houses Restaurant 5, 22 Prime and Serendipity Lounge), Discovery Country Suites in Tagaytay City (home of Café Verbena) and Discovery Shores Boracay (Indigo, Platitos and Sands).  Anything that comes out of Chef David’s high-powered kitchen proves to be cooked with the freshest ingredients, care and creativity.

On the Table

Bread Sticks/Bread and Three Spreads

The perky staff brings to the long table several “tin baskets” of bread and breadsticks escorted with three different dips that are positively addicting.

1st Dip: Skordalia

Potato puree, silky and smooth spread with a hint of lemon

2nd Dip: Sofrito

Tomato with olive oil

3rd Dip: Chicken Liver Pate

Very creamy with a hint of mushroom

Australian Tomahawk Chop and Verse 1 Specialty Menu PHP 4,800

Grilled Tomahawk Chop 1 kilogram, 6-Star Tenderplus Australian Beef Rib Eye Steak

Served to share with a Casserole of Baby Vegetables and a Bowl of Caesar Salad “22 Prime”

1 Bottle of Verse 1 Cabernet Sauvignon

*Allow 25 minutes cooking time

The Tomahawk Chop is one of the largest rib eye steaks in Australia and culled from Tenderplus 6-star grass fed beef.  It takes its name from the 30-centimeter of rib bone that is left attached to the meat, which in turn increase the meat’s flavor and tucks in the moistness when grilled.

My Portion of the Tomahawk Chop

Quick-fire thoughts:

I love the ample size of fat that adds a buttery texture

and heightens flavor of the meat

Peppercorn sauce bursts a bouncy flavor that goes perfectly with the chop

The salad is a good pause in between bites of meat as a cleanser to the palate

Side of baby vegetables had the right crisp and seasoning

–the lone brussel sprout was my favorite!  Quite tasty!!! 🙂

The Tomahawk Chop is a perfect order when dining with friends.  Cast off inhibitions as you all dig in with immense hunger for the tender and flavorful Australian beef.  There is an option to have it sliced proportionately in the kitchen.  Share with a group the unadulterated pleasure of high-end beef and clink your glasses “cheers” to a vibrant wine served on your table.  This is the moment that is best shared with good friends.

Accompanying this gastronomic indulgence is a bottle of Verse 1 Cabernet Sauvignon from Brookland Valley –cited Winery of the Year by the James Halliday 2009 Australia Wine Companion.  Verse 1 wine has rich, vibrant garnet in color while it displays full blackcurrant aromas with hints of leafiness balanced out by fine French oak.  The palate is fruit driven with a soft texture and oak flavors.  Elegant richness balances well with the meat’s intensity.

Chef David, with years of experience cooking in Colombia, Manhattan and Long Island, prepares wonderful dishes both menu staples that have become favorites and upscale monthly specials that you’d certainly want to catch.  22 Prime becomes a more familiar place to you and friends for great food and conversation –a prime spot to share an enjoyable meal that first awes your dining group visually with its massive size, and once cooked, follows through with winsome taste.

Typhoon Ondoy: Helping Hand

Last Saturday, the backyard experienced half-a-foot of floodwater due to overflow of water and clogging of drainage.  My sister’s room, which was on the first floor had ankle-deep water.  We only found out when we opened her room.  She was stranded overnight in UST with other students, slept on the floor as food for the mosquitoes, exceedingly hungry and exhausted.  My dad got stranded overnight also in his office with water up to the 6th flight of the stairs.  His car got flooded to the roof.  A digicam and 2 phones busted.  We were lucky.

Yesterday, Bubba and I left the office early to buy and pack relief goods.  Extremely long lines in the cashier indicate that a lot of people are buying to donate and/or “panic-buying” for stock goods (since PAGASA expects another typhoon to hit Manila tomorrow, Wednesday).

It felt good to be there despite the chaos and sort out what donations are needed, primarily food like bread, biscuits and canned goods, and secondary like toothbrush, alcohol, etc.  This is one of the few times, I really wish I were rich -more money to spare means more money to provide for others.

Overhead the mom and daughter tandem in front of us bought items for donation amounting to quite a huge amount and never bothered to sign the slip –it is most heartwarming when people help in private, anonymously.  Silent in lending a hand.  Politicians can probably do the same.

Not giving aid for the sake of the flashbulbs.

Note: If you’re shopping in Unimart, LSGH (La Salle Greenhills) has a donation drop-off point in the grocery area handled by students.  You can drop off donations there right after shopping or order directly from the admin (if it’s in big bulks) and just present the item sales slip to the cashier.  Any amount of donation and effort helps.

A lot of inspiring act of humanity and spirit of bayanihan seen during the calamity, both regular people and celebrities alike.

The wrath of Typhoon Ondoy devastated Metro Manila and its nearby provinces like Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Pampanga among others.

Hurricane Katrina was at 350 millimeters rainfall while Typhoon Ondoy at 412 millimeters.  The continuous downpour of 9 hours submerged most parts of the Metro including Marikina and Valenzuela.  9 hours!  Can you imagine?  Another manifestation of climate change that is really unnerving.  The documentaries on Nat Geo about Earth not surviving another million years haunt one.

My officemate Karen just told me she saw in the news a dog trying to piggy back on a man’s back but the man shoved him off for survival.  Both are trying to survive.  How heart wrenching.

No one expected that in a matter of few hours, certain areas would be submerged in floodwater.  Big houses are not spared.  Celebrities and politicians weren’t either.

Some survival tips:

1. Stock on food at home, car, office and in your bag.  No one knows how long this climate will last or when a state of emergency happens.  It’s always better to be armed with necessary stocks at home like:

Heads and Tails

There are a lot of restaurants/food stalls to discover in Mall of Asia.  I was at the biggest mall of Asia last Saturday to watch the Pan Asian Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Competition with CW.

heads1

We were strolling along the mall when this food stall called Heads and Tails piqued my curiosity.  Actually, it’s the mascot the caught my attention.  Anyhow, we stayed and watched how the lady prepared the bread, which made us hungry of course so we ordered one for ourselves.

heads2

Chili Paste with Mahu PHP 40

I really liked the chili paste with pork floss.  It had the right heat and crunch.

heads3

Buttered Bread with Ovaltine and Condensed Milk PHP 35

I didnt want to try it at first coz I thought it was weird to put choco powder on bread.  It’s something I can whip up at home for much lesser the cost but we don’t regret that we tried it because it was yummy!   This is their bestseller.  I guess it’s a hit to the kids.
