The Inside Scoop

It was a hot, hot Saturday afternoon.  Bubba picked me up from the spanking new office of Geiser Maclang after lunch.  Since we were already in Makati, Bubba thought of picking up the ice cream Bev texted him about.

This wasn’t the first time Bubba tasted Bev’s homemade ice cream.  The first time he tasted it, he kept yapping how he liked it.  I couldn’t relate that time.

I tried the ube version when there was “Burger Wars” at Bev’s place early this year –where she and Gretchen did a burger cook-off.  Delicious grilled burgers… it was a tough call to choose the better one.  I’d save that for another post.

Black Sesame Ice Cream

Since we didn’t bring a cooler like Bev instructed, we had to eat the ice cream ASAP.  No complaints here.

Bubba’s car was our sole witness as we scoop one ice cream bite after the other like we were in a tight race.  I don’t know if I can get ice cream with black sesame flavor that’s as good anywhere else but I simply love Bev’s Black Sesame Ice Cream.  The flavor wasn’t too overpowering but you get that right hint of black sesame amidst the dense texture of creaminess.

The heat was extreme outside but the ice cream was as intense.  Bev, I’d be first at the door when you open an Ice Cream parlor.

Bubba told me that Bev invested on a good (read: expensive) ice cream maker at home and the quality of her ingredients is top-notch.  I wish I know how to do this at home.  I can’t wait to try her other flavors.  She came up with Earl Grey Tea Ice Cream last week and we are dying to find out how that tastes like.

Thanks Bev! 😉

Hunan Lutong Bahay a.k.a. No Signboard Chinese Restaurant

After going to the Korean embassy, we decided to have lunch at the “no signboard Chinese restaurant” our good friend Bev was telling us about last month.  (Thanks Bev for the heads up! 😉 )

It was not that difficult to find the place from Rockwell.  The area guards directed us to where Camia street is located.  Upon reaching Camia street, we turned left and figured the gate with the Chinese lanterns is the door to yummy Chinese food.  We didn’t nail it but we were close.  It was just next-door.

On the Table

Duck Hot Pot PHP 400

This made the whole visit worthwhile.  The duck was cooked perfectly –tender meat and delicious skin in a bed of dried red chilies and other herbs.  It’s a must-order!!! 🙂

Steamed Dumplings PHP 120

We love steamed dumplings and it makes us think that we’re balancing off all the cholesterol if we order a plate.  It doesn’t make sense but yes we do it.

Mapo Tofu PHP 140

I was anticipating a red dish with loads of tofu.  Despite the lack of color I was expecting, the dish wasn’t so bad.  The sticky translucent brown sauce dish with minced garlic and pork amidst the big tofu cubes was satisfying for its price.

Fried Kang Kong PHP 80

Stir fried kang kong in soy sauce -a plate of veggies can go a long way.  This was probably the only dish that wasn’t a tad bit spicy.

Rice (2) PHP 30

They serve the rice by cup but you can get unlimited rice.  Just walk over the rice station and scoop yourself another bowl of steaming white rice if a serving is not enough.

Hunan Lutong Bahay is the restaurant’s name as we found out from the server.  The owner hails from Hunan, a province in the southern part of China.  According to the lady server, the owner really opted not to place any signboard to preserve the mystery.

The dishes were a bit on the spicy side that worked well with a heap of white rice.  It is well worth a visit if you are in the area.
