May 3, 2010 is a Non-working Holiday

I never thought I’d see the day when May 1 will be moved to another day as a special non-working holiday.  Apparently, May 1, 2010’s ‘premium’ privileges will be applied to May 3, 2010 as President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declared today that this coming weekend will be a long weekend once again in the Philippines.

The Malacañang announced that May 3 will be a non-working holiday in the country so as to give Filipinos a chance to observe Labor Day.

Malacanag has issued Proclamation No. 2043 declaring May 03, 2010 (Monday) as a regular holiday to celebrate “Labor Day”,

which in effect supersedes Proclamation No. 1841 where May 1, 2010 (Saturday) was declared as regular holiday.

Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza said that since Labor Day this year falls on a Saturday, Malacanang has decided to move the observation of the holiday on the nearest working day, which is May 3 or this Monday.  This is supposedly keeping with the government’s holiday economics policy.

Wage boards are expecting a different announcement from PGMA though.  An announcement that their wage hike petitions be favored.  Labor officials confirmed this week that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will not make any wage increase announcements on Labor Day.
