Manang’s Clubhouse in Ateneo

After plurking/tweeting about grilled liempo, Richard challenged me to try the best liempo he’s ever tasted.  And this liempo can actually be found in Ateneo De Manila University.

On one agreed Wednesday in August, Richard and Irene picked me up from the office and we headed straight to my first choice of school, the ADMU grounds.  Manang’s Clubhouse is quite famous for dishing out the best tasting liempo around, plus other dishes, and at such an affordable price.

On the Table

Manang’s Famous Liempo PHP 45 (2)

Thanks to Richard, my eyes were opened to the great-tasting liempo of Manang’s –who has become such an icon in the school grounds.

The slim cut of liempo, appropriately priced, had the right amount of sweet and soy marinade that seeped into the meat.  The liempo was smoked perfectly leaving appetizing charred marks on the meat.

Ginataang Kalabasa at Sitaw PHP

Beans and Pumpkin in coconut cream was the perfect pair of the liempo.  It’s a healthy side dish that complemented the grilled meat.

Giniling

Sautéed ground pork in tomato sauce with green peas, carrot, green bell pepper and potato

Rice (3) PHP

Bubba followed quite late but he was able to taste the liempo (complaining that I only left him a few pieces) and I got another cup of rice because two just didn’t cut out for both our appetites with the delicious Filipino viands in front of us.

After eating, I bought 2 more orders of liempo to go, which Bubba and I enjoyed at home.  Next time, I’m going to buy more liempo to bring home and try their other dishes.

I’m from the rival school but if I knew Manang’s Clubhouse back in college, I wouldn’t mind driving all the way to Ateneo just to get lunch there.

By the way, CONGRATS to the Blue Eagles on the back-to-back UAAP basketball championship!!! 😉

Poco Deli

Carlos, Patty and Trixie gave me a surprise visit at the office that late afternoon.  And what followed was an impromptu dinner set by ZP if I ditch the event I was supposed to attend that evening.  Impromptu dinner it is! 😉

I suggested Poco Deli since it was nearby and it was kinda quiet.  Bubba followed soon after.  Patty and I had the pasta pomodoro while Trixie opted to get the pesto pasta.  The fellows each got this shredded Angus beef in bagel.  Bubba got yogurt as an appetizer while I had wine to relax me after a long day at work.

Oh and everyone shared a pizza.

Dinner that evening was a mix of light deli goodies and howling laughter.  Trixie, ZP and I were rolling in laughter as both of them recount their little weekend escape at Anvaya and the misfits that happened.  Patty shares the laughter but was mostly red throughout the dinner when Trixie and ZP kept teasing her.

The shoe bit was the best.

Legend of India

Bubba and I found ourselves in Makati one evening and looking for a place to eat.  We were debating whether to try a new place or a do a repeat of a dependable.  We opted for the latter and revisited Legend of India.  It hasn’t even been 2 months and we were back to the restaurant.

There was a FIFA World Cup game on and both of us tried to understand the game and the thrill behind it.  Yes, we watched a soccer game and tried to enjoy it –making a lot of jokes around it.

Akun came to our table and said hello.  I was surprised that he still remembered us from our initial visit there.

On the Table

Crispy Potato Fingers PHP

Potato fritters powdered with some Indian spice.  Great bar chow.

Rogan Josh PHP 450

Bubba and I couldn’t remember if we liked the Chicken Vindaloo better than the Rogan Josh but we knew we wanted potatoes with our curry dish.  We ended up ordering Rogan Josh because it was their bestseller but it didn’t have the potatoes.  Rogan Josh is an aromatic curry meat dish cooked with a mixture of strong Indian spices where the fat of the meat is usually roasted first in yogurt marinade.

We weren’t disappointed trying out Rogan Josh again since the mutton meat was so tender and the brown gravy it was soaking in had a lot of flavor.  Bubba enjoyed his beer better with this dish.

Sweet Lassi PHP 110

I think this is the only place I’d ever get my fix for sweet lassi.

Sev Puri (Free)

Akun let us try their Sev Puri which is like the Pani Puri but this time the potato-onion mix was on top of a Puri flake.  It had a variety of texture and flavor.

Inauguration Day –ZP, Richard, Irene, Bubba and I all huddled in the comfort of our favorite STV (Stevie’s) Hainanese Chicken Rice.  We ordered 2 sets and almost finished everything!

Dessert was Costa Brava’s light caramel cake which had just enough sweetness and perfect with Bellini’s house wine that I brought and Irene’s Argento wine.

Thanks Irene and Richard (and cute Lauren!) for having us at your place.

72nd UAAP Men’s Basketball Finals (2009) Game 3: Battle for the Title

The Ateneo Blue Eagles aimed to bank back-to-back titles when they clinched the first win in the final series of the 72nd UAAP men’s basketball tournament last October 1.  The game ended with a 78-71 score with the Eagles leading the way by 13 points since the 1st quarter.  The UE warriors didn’t make it easy for the Eagles retorting with a 19-1 run before the end of the first half.  The Eagles however held on to their game with the 2008 Most Valuable Player Rabeh Al-Hussaini clutching an impressive game with 28 points and 14 boards and Jai Reyes piling sets of triples.

Game Two proved to be a totally different story.  University of the East made the most of the best-of-three finals bringing the series to a do or die match Game 3.  Ateneo received quite a blow from the Warriors being behind by 20 points after the final buzzer.  It’s been 24-years since UE scored a UAAP title and they want to discontinue that record this year.  Last time Ateneo pulled a back-to-back series was in 1987-88, Ateneo is vying to replicate that.

The heat is rising –a smoking Game Three to watch out for.

Game 2 Scores:

UE 88 -Espiritu 22, Llagas 19, Lee 13, Acuña 12, Lingganay 7, Reyes 6, Zamar 5, Duran 4, Tagarda 0, Bandaying 0.

Storm Pepeng Brewing in the North

It’s raining again and the worst is feared.

It hasn’t even been a week and another tropical storm is reported to enter the Philippine territory October 1, 2009, Thursday.  Accroding to PAGASA, Bagyong Pepeng, international codename “Parma,” will likely hit the Batanes group of islands and extreme northern Luzon and parts of Visayas and Mindanao… and it could develop into a super typhoon.

“Yung worst scenario, tatama dito sa may Batanes-Taiwan area, sa extreme Northern Luzon (Our models show the worst scenario is that it will hit the Batanes-Taiwan area, in extreme Northern Luzon),” Pagasa forecaster Gener Quitlong said in an interview on dzBB radio.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, Pagasa said Parma (Pepeng) was estimated at 1,110 km east of Mindanao with maximum sustained winds of 75 kph and gustiness of up to 90 kph.

“Extreme Northern Luzon, Eastern Visayas and Eastern Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.”

As of 10am, Typhoon Pepeng is now in the Philippines, currently 900kms east of Surigao City, which carries with it, strong winds.   The 5-day forecast reveals that the height of the typhoon will hit around Saturday afternoon, October 3, 2009.

UPDATE: Some Plurk messages read: Hail Storm in QC (Oct. 1- 12:00nn).

“Friday (October 2) is a REGULAR WORKING DAY. But massive cleanup will push through in affected areas.”

The Man in the Mirror, Michael Jackson Dies at Age 50

Legendary music icon Michael Jackson was found dead at his Los Angeles home, Thursday.

The King of Pop, the biggest celebrity world over, was suspected to have died of cardiac arrest.  The Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to a call placed around 12:30pm.  The responding paramedics performed CPR trying to revive the star (ET has an exclusive photo).  He wasn’t breathing when he was found and was immediately rushed to the UCLA Medical Center in LA.  The cause of Jackson’s death is still sparse and uncertain.  Some reports speculate that it might have been an overdose of prescription or certain substances.  Michael Jackson didn’t have any symptoms of cardiac problem or any heart illnesses and resuscitation would have been able to revive himThis sudden tragic death shocks all music fans and there is outpouring of sympathy for the loss of Michael Jackson.

Coincidentally, Jessica Zafra wrote in her column in the Philippine Star a Michael Jackson feature today.  On Larry King Live and Anderson Cooper, Michael Jackson’s friends sends their deepest sympathy, Quincy Jones, Randy Jackson, Sheryl Crow, Cher, among others.  Donna Sommer will dedicate her concert to Michael.  Madonna says he was one of the greats and truly an inspiration to her music as well.  I wonder how Macaulay Culkin and Chris Tucker feels.  They were pretty close to Jackson.

Jermaine Jackson, Michael Jackson’s Brother, with a heavy heart faced media at a press conference releasing the cause of Jackson’s death.

Michael Jackson first rose to stardom in the late 1960s as the lead singer of the Jackson 5.  He was that little gifted boy with so much energy performing with the music group that he formed with his four older brothers.  Their famous hits include “ABC” and “I’ll Be There” that has so many renditions from other artists.

The 1982 album “Thriller” is the best-selling album of all time having sold over 50 million copies worldwide.  The much famed album includes top charters “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” and the most recognizable song to the world, “Thriller.”  Usher, Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake music are from Michael Jackson’s influences.

Jackson’s career started to tarnish with a series of scandals.  From his universal popularity in the 1980s, his stardom started to decline with a series of surgically altered appearance.

Michael Jackson popularized so many dance moves such as the moonwalker, pulling up the pants and the crotch-grabbing dance moves.  Justin Timberlake’s voice reminds me of Jackson’s high-pitched voice that is punctuated with squeals and titters.  He was the ultimate performer, if not the best dancer… King of all Generations and probably all genres for me… He was admired for his songs but Michael Jackson was also very instrumental in uniting Black and White together.  The soulful lyrics of They Dont Care About Us, Heal the World, Boogeyman, Man in the Mirror, Black and White transcends across nations.  Someone said that Michael Jackson’s death is like passing of an era.  I totally agree.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of the King of Music, Michael Jackson.  He was an all-out performer and has changed the music scene.  My bucket list includes watching a Michael Jackson concert.  I was so ecstatic to learn that he was doing a final run of concert series in Europe starting with London.  There were even talks that he might do one in Asia.  There are only three legendary icons for me, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson (and probably Beatles as a group).  The only female counterpart I can think of that is on the same level is Madonna (who is also in my bucket list of performers I want to watch).  They are the only artists that really made such enormous impact that shifted music landscape.  His legacy in the music industry and the inspiration his creativity brought will remain in music fans’ hearts generation after generation.

Nike’s Manny Pacquiao Limited Apparel

Saturdays are meant for sleeping in until noon.  Not last Saturday though.  The day started early and we were at the Fort by 9AM. W-H-Y?

Last May 2, 2009, starting 12 noon, Manny Pacquiao fans and supporters get the chance to purchase Pacman’s limited apparel during this one day only event.  The most popular item in the Manny Pacquiao pop up store was the Nike Trainer 1, which retailed at PHP 5,209.

The Manny Pacquiao pop-up store one-off event was held at Magnet Café Bonifacio High Street.  Magnet Café is 2 doors away from the Nike branch store at the Fort.  Limited pairs were also made available at Nike Park BHS the next day.

What we were interested in was the Manny Pacquiao windbreaker that has the Philippine flag design.  When we got there though, there were about 80 people in line already, who supposedly camped out just to get their hands on the items.  3 hours of waiting… and there was no guarantee that when the store opens at 12nn, there would be stocks left.  As much as we wanted to purchase the windrunners, I just didn’t have the patience to wait that long.

Cheers to those who were able to buy what they went there for!!!  I’m green with envy.
