In the Flesh: Raw and Raring

Guess who Bubba was training with last Saturday? 😉

He is a Filipino-British actor, host and commercial model that can make hundred of girls flushed with fever just by flashing his bright melting smile.

Bubba and Coach Basas gave him a crash course in MMA to get him prepped for his new show.

In Action:

Superman Punch!!! 🙂

Guess who owns those white gloves he used? 😉

He’s quite simple and unpretentious.  He was open to learn and eager to practice.  Without gripes about taking a break, the heat or an aching muscle.  No star complexities at all –something that would definitely make you adore him more… even off cam.

Spelling Bee and Persia Grill

I love watching plays but I wasn’t so keen on braving Makati traffic in December.  Braving the heavy traffic is after all for the… brave 😉  The tickets were free so there was not much hesitation to just can it but Jen said she and hubby Stan (my poker buddy) enjoyed the show.  I decided to choke up my laziness to travel to Makati and watched the play.

December 04-13, 2009
Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium,
RCBC Building, Makati
Directed by Bobby Garcia
WHAT’S THE BEE ABOUT?

In the Broadway Musical Comedy, THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grownups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.

This hilarious tale of overachievers’ angst chronicles the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. A quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

Tickets are available at Ticketworld.

Thanks to Jen, both Bubba and I had a great time.  It was fantastic!  It made me remember how I love watching plays –it can be quite inspiring.  You can really observe how the thespians are passionate about their craft.  It is quite hard to make people laugh –good writing and comic timing are key factors.  That’s exactly what the play had since the audience were laughing out loud last night.  I enjoyed my time and it was worth the short trip to Makati –I wouldn’t have mind if it were longer.  I really love seeing Joel Trinidad on stage.  The lady teacher was pretty hilarious too –with her improv description of the “spelling bee contestants.”  Besides, I’ve always liked looking at Carla Guevarra’s face -she’s so pretty and reminds me eerily of my friend Dianne/Nina, who looks like her missing twin.

After watching Spelling Bee last night at the Carlos P. Romulo auditorium in RCBC Plaza, Bubba and I were both famished.  Our tummy muscles worked up an appetite laughing.

Persia Grill

Despite the restaurant being a bit small, the interior was pretty cozy with upholstered chairs.

On the Table

Ox Brain PHP 90

Best Ox brain I’ve tasted in the Metro.  It’s toasty but still retains that milky egg-y taste and texture but not so soggy and raw like the one in “B” –the one that we usually frequent.  It wasn’t so oily either.  Yummy!

Chelo Kebab Kobideh (2) PHP 199

Two sticks of charbroiled ground beef prepared with Persian spices served with fresh grilled tomato and steamed long grain rice.  All their kebab meals are served with Persia Grill’s eggplant and yogurt dip.

The Kobideh is noticeably packed with more meat than the usual fare from other Persian restaurants.

While chomping on our food, I was immediately texting Chaifer (another Persian food fan) to try Persia Grill.  She beat me to it haha and we both love how reasonable the prices are.  She claims she even finished two cups of rice with her Kobideh and grilled salmon.  Yum!

I definitely know now where to head to for my Persian cravings.  Please open one in Ortigas because I don’t like going to Megamall –it’s just too huge.

Dirty Dancing Patrick Swayze Dies at Age 57

Patrick Swayze, died at age 57 after a 20-month battle with pancreatic cancer. The actor was famed for his dancing skills in the movie “Dirty Dancing.” A three-time Golden Globe nominee, Swayze became a star with his performance as the misunderstood bad-boy Johnny Castle in that movie. In 1990, he also starred opposite Demi Moore in “Ghost.”

Fans of the actor were saddened to learn in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from a particularly deadly form of cancer.

“Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months,” said a statement released by his publicist, Annett Wolf.

Despite having a painful illness, Swayze veered off taking painkillers particularly because he had kept working despite the diagnosis and didn’t want the medication affect his acting. He also recognized the seriousness of the disease.

During an interview with Barbara Walters in early 2009, Swayze calculates that he has about 2 years to live.

Johnny Depp, Public Enemy No. 1, Mad in Wonderland Leaving 4K Tip

Johnny Depp never plays a character unless it’s different and intriguing.  He is never the ordinary person in his films.  Lately, his name is making noise again in Hollywood for his most recent flick, Public Enemies.  In this Michael Mann directed film, Marion Cotillard plays his love interest.

Depp was rumored to have left a very hefty tip while dining in Chicago last week.  Chicago was the setting of the new gangster movie.   He was dining with co-star and director at Gibsons Steakhouse and left well past midnight.  The unsuspecting waiter, Mohammaed A. Sekhani reportedly received a $4,000 tip from the star.

More than Public Enemies though, what is more interesting is the movie which he also stars in, Alice in Wonderland.  He will play the role of the Mad Hatter.  I love the imaginative fantasy of Alice in Wonderland when I was young, but the Mad Hatter in the book really gave me the creeps.  I wonder how Depp will fair in the role and Tim Burton behind the camera.  I like Tim’s eerie creative take on films.

Interestingly, Helena Bonham Carter is in the same film playing the Red Queen.  She is married to Burton.  Carter and Depp have both worked together during the filming of Sweeney Todd.

I am really excited to catch Alice in Wonderland.  Anne Hathaway plays the White Queen, Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum, while Mia Wasikowska plays Alice.

Mia Wasikowska is a 19-year old Australian actress who earned critical praise in the HBO drama, “In Treatment.”  She was named Variety Magazine’s “10 actors to watch.”

Burton apparently chose her because of a certain emotional toughness reflected in her face… that makes her kind of an older person but with a younger person’s mentality.  Alice will be the only character in Wonderland who isn’t enhanced in some degree with makeup or digital manipulation.
