Manila News Today: Sept. 28, 2009: Tropical Storm Ondoy/Kestana and The Devastation

The National Disaster Coordinating Council announced that classes are suspended in all levels in Metro Manila and Rizal, Laguna, Batangas province tomorrow (Sept. 28) and Tuesday (Sept. 29).  Several towns and cities in Metro Manila, including Pasig and Marikina, and towns in Rizal, such as San Mateo, Cainta and Taytay, have experienced massive flooding due to the continuous heavy downpour since Saturday morning.

NDCC chairman and Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro decided to suspend classes to concentrate government rescue and relief efforts to thousands of people displaced from their homes due to the onslaught of typhoon Ondoy (international name Kestana).  PAGASA reports that this is the heaviest rainfall in Philippine history.

MRT and LRT announced that they are in operation for 24 hours and will only require a flat rate of PHP 10 for all stations.

Close to 1,000 people were rescued by authorities from their flooded homes in many parts of Metro Manila.  Some residents of Pasig, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, and Marikina spent the weekend on the roof of their houses, which were submerged in flood water.  San Juan area was also affected especially in creekside areas.  The number of affected people is nearly 400,000.

Another tropical storm might hit the Philippines in 3 days.  I hope PAGASA and NDCC provide more details and pre-cautionary measures.

UPDATE (Sept. 28, 2009 10:05 AM): De Castro / Ortigas Extension –floodwaters subside to waist level.

Poker Tales: A Diamond Cuts Like A Knife

Cash Game: 25/50 blinds

Minimum buy-in: 2K

Got my stack to 3,300 after not getting a bad beat with my rockets during a heads up game.  It’s not hard to win with a pocket of aces pre-flop but it does not mean it’s unbeatable –depending on how you play it, it’s easy to get your aces beat too.  So make sure that the bullets hit their target.

I was sitting on the big blind position when 6 players call the 50 blind.  In my hands are 8 and 10 suited diamonds.  I was tempted to raise the bet because I love an 8 and 10 on my hand but I decided to play conservatively and just checked.

Flop: 8s 9d Qd

I hit a favorite number of mine and gave me bottom pair.

First to act, I bet 100 to test the mettle of the table and have a feel of what the other players have.  The one under the gun folded.  Gary re-raises to 400.  Joy in middle position calls.  Right beside Joy, Gervais unfalteringly pushes two stacks of 100 on the betting arena and raises to 2K.

My move.

2K, that’s committing more than half of my stack and his hand might already be made.  I requested for time and calculated the situation.  I was also flush draw and gut shot straight draw –which means 13 outs, plus I might hit my trips with my bottom pair.  Looking at Gervais and that betting move –it was either he was 2 pairs (Q 9 or Q 8 or 8 9 or more dangerously, he might be straight, meaning he must have J 10.  If he had 2 pairs, I can kill that with trips if an 8 lands on the board.  However, if his 2 pair included a number that gives me trips then that makes him full house.  Abandon ship on the trips.  I have to have a winnable 5-card hand.  I’m more inclined to believe he has a straight.

That move showed he was scared of the flush draw.  He couldn’t have flush draw with his hand because I had the 10d.  He feels his hand was strong enough to duel with at least one other player.

Now, what about Gary –he was the initial re-raiser, it means he’s also confident with his hand.  I look at Gary.  I put him on Ace high flush draw.  If he’s flush draw then we both have lesser outs –plus I was only 10 high flush draw.  Any Jd, Kd, and Ad mixed with any #d can flush me out.  Another diamond might prove to be more damaging.

But Gary was playing tight earlier.  He couldn’t be re-raising my bet to triple with just a flush draw.  He could be top pair or also two pair.  More than anything else, I was straight flush draw –second in line next to the unbeatable royal flush.  But that gives me only ONE out.  One card that can spark this coal mine.

I’ve only invested 150 in the pot to risk 2K of my stack, while I’m bottom pair with 13 outs that may never come or with 6 outs that can give my opponent a higher flush.  There’s only one card that can buy me out of this jam.  JACK diamonds.  Betting 2K means I’m only risking 700 of my money because 1,300 were won anyway.  It is after all for a huge sizable pot.

Gervais called time.  I had to clear with the dealer if that means 1-minute.  It does.  30 seconds into my time, I pushed the 2K inside.

Certain: 13 Outs

Uncertain: What they have on their hand.

I like the fact of 13 outs better than my assessment of their hands.

Gary calls also.  I don’t remember if Joy called or folded, I was eager to see the turn.

Turn: Jd

I pushed all in quickly with my 1.3K.  It’s now up to them to decide whether or not I’m only “representing” the flush without the hand or I really hit it.

I have the nuts but I shouldn’t slow play it and give them a free river card if they don’t bet.

Gary thinks about it considerably.  Gervais called time again.  Finally, Gary calls reluctantly.  Gervais went all in, which means Gary has to add some 1K more.

Flop 4s

Show time for side pot:

Gary’s Hand: 10s Jc

Gervais’ Hand: Qs 8c

Gary wins their side pot.

Show time for main pot:

I show two sterling diamonds of 8 and 10.  Straight flush.

It was my best cash game to date.

Diamonds are truly a girl’s best friend.  🙂

Reminiscent: My First Ever Poker Tournament

Flipping through my old emails, I found an email from my good friend Paolo, who forwarded an online news bit he found about the JW Poker Bar Tour that happened sometime March 2006.

I was playing free Texas Hold ‘Em online games around Q4 of 2005.  Celebrity Poker and David Foley’s smart funny hosting got me interested in the card game. In the real world, Paolo from time to time tagged me along to our former professor’s condo unit to play house poker with other college friends.  I’ve played more or less 10 games with them in total.  That’s why I was hesitant to join when Paolo mentioned about the Johnny Walker Poker bar tour.  But poker wasn’t that big yet in Manila at that time.  I shrugged and said what the heckle jeckle.

I think there were 2 or 3 tables that night, with two other girls in the tournament.  I was amazed that I made it to the final table… and even more surprised to win that leg.  I never played again after that tournament.

My poker days were only revived after this event.

The past two months have been nothing but a poker slump.  Instead of playing more, I’ve played less.  In June, I only played twice I think.  In July, I played in the FPT and got busted out with my big slick suited.  The poker morale is really down.  With work schedule and events, there’s not much time to practice lately.  I was invited to another group’s house poker this week.  I hope I play well.  Like I said, I take bad beats over bad decisions any time.  But here’s crossing my fingers (bad beats hurt too).

Well, I need some poker cheering up so I’m posting this.

Jane Chua’s aggressiveness all throughout the night paid off as she became the bar leg winner of the Johnnie Walker Poker Bar Tour leg at Ice Vodka Bar Tuesday Night night. Chua had to play Marco “Cardinal” Aventajado during the heads-up portion of the tournament. Chua applied pressure on Aventajado who didn’t seem to catch any cards, parlaying her 2-1 chip disadvantage to a 4-1 advantage. Aventajado tried to double up with King-ten unsuited but Chua quickly called with Nine-eight unsuited. It seem to be a misstep on the part of Chua, being behind pre-flop 2-1. But with the flop coming two-two-eight, Chua suddenly jumped to become a 4-1 favorite to win the hand. The five of clubs gave Aventajado some hope reigning in Chua back to 2-1 favorite with because of his flush draw. But it was Chua’s night as the seven of hearts came in the river and Chua became the leg winner, besting 9 other players in leg of the Poker Bar Tour at Quisine.

Poker Bar Tour is produced by Pit Boss Events and Cardinal Entertainment. Stay tuned  tomorrow for highlights of the Johnnie Walker Bar tour leg at Bagaberde Pasig. The Johnnie Walker Poker Bar Tour begins registration is at 8pm and the tournament begins promptly at 9pm.

I am quite happy to share that during last Sunday’s Metro tournament at 300 buy-in, I was able to again reach the final table.  7 tables and it was trimmed down to 1.  It’s a bit of a morale booster too.

How are your cards dealt lately?

Filipino Poker Tour is just around the bend.  Yesterday the free roll at Pokerstars.com reached 1,000+.  This must be due to the on air presence of their plugs during the Filipino Poker Tour show.

If you’re on SKY Cable, you can also catch their replays on Maxxx channel, one of my favorite channels this year.  The channel has augmented their program line-up and there are now a lot of not to miss shows plus reruns of old favorites.

I caught the FPT show last Tuesday night and yesterday afternoon.  I like the format of the show and I simple love the plugs of Pokerstars.com particularly those of Daniel Negreanu.

It’s the final table of last year’s FPT next Tues 7PM on Maxxx.  Don’t miss it!

Manny Pacquiao Faces Miguel Cotto in the Ring

After a soiree of dialogues and press releases, Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao will face Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto in the ring.  The next Pacquiao event is slated on November 14, 2009 and will be held in Las Vegas.

Both fighters have agreed to meet at a catch weight of 145 pounds, which is two below the welterweight limit and five above the light-welterweight maximum limit.

World Boxing Association welterweight titleholder Shane Mosley has publicly showed in the past several weeks his eagerness to fight the boxing superstar, but promoter Bob Arum who handles affairs for both Pacquiao and Cotto, is more keen on setting a match-up between Pacman and Cotto.  Mosley was even willing to fight at 140 lbs and at only 40% revenue cut.  The 10% give on the purse wasn’t too attractive for Pacquiao’s camp and have decided to close the deal with Cotto’s camp.

Expectedly, the Mayweather Jr. and Marquez fight in September 20 (Manila Time) will also be highly anticipated since this is Mayweather’s comeback after his retirement.  The fight was postponed to September (from May) due to Mayweather’s rib injury sustained during training.

Both Mayweather and Marquez return to the ring in September, while Pacquiao’s rumored 2nd to the last fight is set 2 months after.  Boxing fans are eager to see if Mayweather will triumph in that meet to face Pacquiao.

Pacquiao Meets Cotto or Mosley?

Is the Pacquiao fight in November against Cotto coming around the bend?  Or are there still talks underway for a Pacquiao versus Mosley meet?  Since it’s taking time for Pacquiao’s camp to negotiate the weight issue with possible Puerto Rican foe Miguel Cotto, Mosley is lurking again trying to outbid Cotto’s camp for the fight.

Shane Mosley is yapping again challenging the best pound for pound Filipino boxer and he agrees recently to go down his weight division and fight Pacquiao in the junior welterweight division at 140 pounds.  Previously, he expressed his willingness to go down to 144 lbs just to get the premium fight.  He wants the opportunity to steal the elusive belt from Pacquiao and was even offering Pacman a 60-40 revenue cut in favor of the latter..

“I thought about my legacy and my history,” said Mosley. “I think that me being willing to fight and the only thing that stands between us is 143 or 144 and we’re going back and forth and he’s playing games with Cotto.”

With his current offer at 140 lbs., Mosley said Pacquiao would surely run out of excuses not to fight him.  He is waiting for Pacquiao to say, “yes, let’s go ahead and do it… and let’s fight”.

“There should be no excuses. There should be no hold ups for Bob Arum or nobody.  I’m the only one stepping up to the plate and willing to do something, willing to fight, willing to give the fans what they want… a great fight,” said the welterweight champ.

Meantime, the Marquez and Mayweather fight is scheduled on September 19 in US and September 20, Manila Time.

Pacquiao – Cotto Face Off Brewing

Pacquiao – Cotto Face Off Brewing

Miguel Cotto sealed a recent win against a very tough Joshua Clottey retaining the World Boxing Organization welterweight title.  It was a split decision that closed the deal of a very hard fought battle.  A few expected that it would come to the judges’ decision when Cotto knocked down the former IBF champion Clottey with a firm left at the end of first round but the latter stood up just in time.  Both men exchanged hooks and uppercuts that landed to the body and head.

At the end of Round 3, a head clash between the two boxers opened a gash on Cotton’s left eye that bled continuously throughout the match.  Manny Pacquiao sat ringside with Arum and saw how the bleeding blocked the Puerto Rican’s vision, which left him vulnerable to Clottey’s commanding blows.  Cotto didn’t let the bleeding affect his game and steered a strategy of throwing quick punches and then breaking out of the battlefield before Clottey can counterpunch.  But vision was not the only problem of the match.  During the fifth round, Clottey slipped and hurt a knee.  He winced in pain when the referee urged him to stand.

It was a long and tiring battle for the two but Cotto emerged the victorious as only one judge scored it in favor of Clottey.  The fan went crazy over the Puerto Rican’s win that reminded Pacquiao of Hatton’s tremendous support from the Brits.  Impressed by the amount of fan support Miguel Cotto gathered at Madison Square Garden, Pacquiao gave Bob Arum the green light to arrange a fight between the two stars.  The bout became more likely after Floyd Mayweather Jr. suffered a rib injury that postponed his returning fight against Juan Manuel Marquez.  Pacquiao was targeting Mayweather as his next opponent if the latter wins over Marquez.  Or a third winner takes all bout between the Filipino champ and Marquez can brew if the win were the other way around.

The target date for the Pacquiao-Cotto face-off is November 14, 2009.

The highly anticipated bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez on July 18 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas is postponed.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s comeback fight is pushed back because he suffered a rib injury during training last week.  This was supposed to be his return after a year-long interim retirement.  Mayweather officially ended his retirement on May 2 this year when he announced he would fight Marquez.  They were scheduled to fight at a catch-weight of 144 pounds, more than Marquez has ever fought and the lightest weight for Mayweather since 2005.

Mayweather expressed his disappointment over the injury that forced him to postpone the welterweight fight.  He said he was looking forward to getting back in the ring.  The former 5-division champ hasn’t boxed since knocking out Ricky Hatton in December 2007.

Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KOs) said in a statement from his training camp in Mexico that he was also disappointed.  Marquez was reported to receive a minimum $4 million payday for the fight.

Mayweather tried to work through the injury but the extent of the injury proves to be really painful for the welterweight boxer.  If Mayweather recovers from the rib or cartilage injury, a likely date is Sept. 19, which is the weekend of Mexican Independence Day and a weekend where there is traditionally a major fight involving a Mexican boxer. Marquez is regarded as Mexico’s No. 1 active fighter.

Mayweather knows how dangerous of an opponent Marquez is and he wants to make sure he is in the best shape possible come fight day.  It is a big fight awaiting these two.  More so because this fight is supposed to determine who is worthy to meet the current pound for pound champ Manny Pacman Pacquiao in the ring.

Shane Mosley Wants To Meet Pacman in the Ring

Shane Mosley Wants to Face Pacquiao

Shane Mosley has been declaring that he wants to face Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao in the ring since early this year.

The oldest boxing champ at almost 38 years old recently nabbed a stunning knockout of Antonio Margarito and was quoted to say that he was ready to find the “one with the most money.”  The main issue of the weight was the subject of deliberation.  Freddie Roach challenges Mosley to trim down to 142 pounds.  But Mosley refuses saying that his comfortable weight is within 145.

However, WBA Welterweight Champion said to fightnews.com on Sunday, that he is now ready to take on Pacquiao.

Mosley quoted, “There are conflicting reports from the Pacquiao camp an upcoming fight between me and Manny Pacquiao. I want it to be known that I want to fight Pacquiao and I want to fight him now.”

Mosley’s urges the Pacquiao camp to fight in a catch weight match, which could mean 143 lbs, give and take.  The question is whether or not Mosley’s 147 lb title would be at stake for this match.

Mosley is seven years older than Pacman and a full three inches taller than the reigning pound-for-pound champion.

Floyd Mayweather Jr., the returning ex-pound-for-pound king, takes on Juan Manuel Marquez on July 18, and should only be considered a Pacquiao opponent for next year.

Mayweather Jr. has not stepped in the same ring as Pacquiao.  On the other hand, Marquez is the formidable opponent that Pacquaio has not achieved a convincing victory yet.  They have met twice but the first match was declared a draw when it should have been Pacquiao’s while the 2nd match was clearly Marquez but was given to Pacquiao.

Whether the bout is against Mayweather or Marquez, Arum has penciled Oct. 17 as the date of Pacquiao’s next fight.

Pacquiao still has two fights remaining in him before he declares retirement.  He could face Mayweather and/or Marquez and/or Mosley.  All three are have shown interest in challenging the best Filipino boxer there is.  Mosley recently has shown a lot of eagerness.  Mosley claims that he is the best fighter in boxing and he is ready to reclaim the title of number one pound-for-pound fighter.

Nike’s Manny Pacquiao Limited Apparel

Saturdays are meant for sleeping in until noon.  Not last Saturday though.  The day started early and we were at the Fort by 9AM. W-H-Y?

Last May 2, 2009, starting 12 noon, Manny Pacquiao fans and supporters get the chance to purchase Pacman’s limited apparel during this one day only event.  The most popular item in the Manny Pacquiao pop up store was the Nike Trainer 1, which retailed at PHP 5,209.

The Manny Pacquiao pop-up store one-off event was held at Magnet Café Bonifacio High Street.  Magnet Café is 2 doors away from the Nike branch store at the Fort.  Limited pairs were also made available at Nike Park BHS the next day.

What we were interested in was the Manny Pacquiao windbreaker that has the Philippine flag design.  When we got there though, there were about 80 people in line already, who supposedly camped out just to get their hands on the items.  3 hours of waiting… and there was no guarantee that when the store opens at 12nn, there would be stocks left.  As much as we wanted to purchase the windrunners, I just didn’t have the patience to wait that long.

Cheers to those who were able to buy what they went there for!!!  I’m green with envy.

The Real Deal: Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao Signs with ABS-CBN

Manny Pacquiao announces live on TV Patrol, Channel 2, Wednesday night that he has signed up with ABS-CBN Corporation for the exclusive coverage of his fight with Ricky Hatton on May 2, 2009 (Manila time).  In a bold move, Pacman surprises viewers with the announcement, having been exclusive under the Solar Entertainment banner for several years.  He is now back in being a “Kapamilya.”

Minutes after the announcement, Solar releases a statement through its lawyer on 24 Oras, which is the evening news show of network counterpart, GMA.  The lawyer, Enrique Dela Cruz Jr., intimated that Pacquiao does not have control to remove its contractual obligations from Solar and transfer telecast rights to ABS-CBN.  Solar holds a live contract that run until 2012 for exclusive broadcast rights over the Pacquiao fights across all platforms.  Solar Entertainment reiterated that the contract is still valid and binding and they continue to carry the legal right to air Pacman’s fights saying that Pacquiao or ABS-CBN cannot violate that legal agreement.

Unconfirmed reports say that other than the business deal that amounts anywhere between PHP 120 Million to PHP 180 Million per fight, another underlying factor that made Pacman switch is the media support he was going to get from ABS-CBN for his electoral campaign.  ABS-CBN is dominant and very visible in the Saranggani area.  Pacman is candidly considering running again for the same congressional seat in his province General Santos city, which he lost to incumbent Congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio.

Under the ABS-CBN deal, the next fights of Pacman will be aired over the giant network and not on GMA-7, which telecast the recent fights of the world’s pound for pound king.  Solar Entertainment partnered with GMA-7 for these past fights, giving them the free TV rights to air Pacman’s bouts.  Ironically, Pacman has 2 shows under GMA’s belt, Pinoy Records which he co-hosts with Chris Tiu and Totoy Bato, where he plays the trainer of Robin Padilla in the action series.

Rumors have been spreading since early this year that Solar’s ties with Pacquiao have been severed caused by non-payment of fees that Pacman’s camp should be collecting from Solar Sports.  Solar vice president for business operations Ralph Roy also have said to denounce two Inquirer exclusives, saying that the paper put the financial state of the company in a bad light.  The owners of Solar Sports and ABS-CBN met recently where the idea of buying out Pacquiao’s contract from Solar was initially considered.

If the case were true that Solar has been delinquent in its payment to Pacquiao then that can tantamount to breach of the agreement, which paves the route to pre-termination of the contract, provided this is one of the explicit termination effects of the agreement.

Hatton would probably set out to be Pacquiao’s biggest and most arduous fight in his career.  Ricky Hatton is one of the premiere boxers of today and he is at the peak of his game.  When Pacquiao fought with Mexican boxing giants, Barrera, Morales, Marquez, Dela Hoya, they were at the end of their prime.  Pacquiao is said to have met his match in Hatton.  However, Pacman predicts a win as he promises to bring honor to the country once again.  Speculation boils that the winner of Pacquiao versus Hatton bout is appointed to meet Mayweather in the next fight.

Pacquiao is set to retire after one or two more fights after Hatton.  One might be scheduled at the end of the year and another one for 2010.

Poohkwang on TV

Sunday’s Best this coming Sunday on ABS-CBN is featuring Poohkwang.  Poohkwang is the hilarious tandem of Pokwang and Pooh in a comedy show (Spooftacular) that went on an extended run at the Music Museum.

I was able to catch it live during the series but it would be an exercise of the midsection to remember just how funny these two are.

I just hope the show I watched wasn’t the show they taped and that my oversized wipe-open mouth wasn’t caught on camera.

Mickey’s Deli

Before we hopped our way to the ABS-CBN Trade Event at A-venue last night, we first grabbed a dinner at Mickey’s Delicatessen along Jupiter Street.  It was either that or Alexi’s Deli, but since Mickey’s was nearer, we decided to test the German deli.

mick1

The setting of this restaurant is pleasant with an atmosphere that combines European essence with a casual yet sophisticated look.  As I sit down on my wooden chair, I can see that it is the most vibrant deli I’ve been to.  Wait staff robed in blue and white-checkered Holland milkmaid outfits greet you as a welcome, though without a cheerful mood I note.  Nevertheless, the deli looked so inviting.

mick2

The tables and chair aren’t dramatic.  It simply had a ceramic mug that holds the utensils.  A glass window allows the clients to peer inside the kitchen and actually see the black suited chefs grill your wieners.

mick3

It took us quite some time to order because the menu was very limited.  Selection of wines and cheese are more extensive than the actual dishes.  More restrictive we found out –most are mainly sausage orders.  Nurnberger pork sausages are their specialty, as my feeble mind would naturally assume since orders come in different plates ergo quantities.  The smallest order is 6 of the popular sausages that amount to about PHP 260++.  Unable to make up my mind, I decided to try the sausage sampler, which was quite pricey at PHP640++.

mick4

The sausage sampler is a slaver of 1 long piece of Vienna, 1 2-inch thick veal (is the meat of a young calf) -grilled or boiled, 2 Nurnberger pork sausage, 2 bratwurst, and pure beef sausage served with warm potato salad and sauerkraut.  My eating partner is not a fan of mustard but he finished the first saucer and asked for a 2nd round.

mick5

The restaurant had 4 tables occupied at the time we visited.  Interestingly, it was all male diners.  This is certainly what you call a sausage fest.  It’s true because they also offer Nurnberger sandwiches.

mick6

Lartizan is the Boulangerie Francaise found inside the deli.  We bought a tuna turnover PHP 58, and a blueberry muffin PHP35, served warm.  I was very happy with both purchases.  The tuna turnover, which was perfect blend of tuna meat, cheese and cream almost, melts in your mouth.

mick7

Their soups of the day available were Minestrone and French Onion, while salads were Insalata di Parma or Insalata Al Tonno, which in more barbaric terms simply mean mixed greens with tuna or ham.

mick8

mick9

I find the prices quite a bit steep but not at all bad.  Spending PHP 640 for hotdogs?  Not my type of investment, but I’d definitely go back to the Lartizan to bring home some sourdough bread.  The breads smelled fresh and tasted delish!

Sangkalan Re-Launch

Around the ABS-CBN vicinity, there are a lot of Filipino grill restaurants.  One of which is Sangkalan.  I was invited by the restaurant to be their guest of honor on the restaurant’s re-launch.
