June 19, 2013 is a Philippine Holiday?

UPDATE as of June 18: Malacanang has issued Proclamation 600 declaring June 19, 2013 as a Special (Non-Working) Holiday in the Province of Laguna to commemorate 152nd Birth Anniversary of Jose Rizal.  In this regard, employees who are assigned to work on this day will be given premium pay in accordance with their company’s existing policies.

It’s a holiday in Laguna tomorrow!!!!! WOOOT.

——-

The Palace declared last year that June 19, 2012 is a Philippine special non-working holiday in the city of Calamba and regional province of Laguna to commemorate the birthday of our national hero, Jose P. Rizal.

I wonder if Malacanang will declare the same this year for Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s 152nd birthday on Wednesday, June 19, 2013.

But instead of just a 3-day long weekend this coming month of August, we might be seeing a 4-day long weekend.  Eidl-al-Fitr or Eidl al Fitr (Eid al-Fitr, Eid ul-Fitr, Id-Ul-Fitr, Eid) falls on August 20, 2012 which is a Monday before August 21.  This date is marked as the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal and also signifies the end of Ramadan.

July 13, 2012 as National Day of Remembrance for King of Comedy Dolphy

President Benigno Aquino declared under Proclamation No. 433 that Friday, July 13, 2012 is the National Day of Remembrance for the late Philippine king of comedy Rodolfo Vera Quizon, to his millions of fans, Dolphy.  The sad news broke out on social media re Dolphy’s death last Tuesday after he succumbed to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

In a press statement, “The President issued the proclamation in recognition of how the nation deeply feels the passing of Dolphy. In the proclamation, the President cited Dolphy as a man who will live on in Philippine cultural history—and in the hearts of many of his countrymen.  President Aquino in his proclamation said that every milestone that Dolphy marked in a career that spanned decades, raised the standards of the entertainment industry, and strengthened our cultural identity, giving innumerable aspirants an example to look up to.”

Malacanang is citing Dolphy’s contributions to Philippine culture, arts and entertainment as well as his philanthropic and generosity towards Filipinos in general.

However, July 13, 2012 is NOT a non-working holiday.  People have clamored for Malacanang to declare a Day of Mourning but as Dolphy’s family has expressed, Dolphy would want to be remembered for his life and not passing.  We all want to celebrate his life and the late comedian’s art and artistry, his kindness and generosity, and deep patriotism.

Some people remarked that Palace, receiving proposals to commemorate Dolphy’s life, should have declared his birthday instead as the National Day of Remembrance to make it more significant.

The last day of the public viewing, where fans can pay their respect, will be on Saturday, from 8 am to 3 pm.

The films of deeply loved Dolphy will be shown on Cinema One, SKY Cable Channel 56, from July 14 to July 20, 6am onwards.

January 23, 2012 (Monday) has been declared by Malacañang as a special non-working day in observance of Chinese New Year.  If I’m not mistaken, this is the first that Chinese New Year is honored as a Philippine holiday.

“The Chinese nationals all over the world will celebrate Spring Festival, popularly known as the Chinese New Year, which is one of the most revered and festive events celebrated not only in China but also in the Philippines by both Chinese Filipinos and ordinary Filipinos as well; and the joint celebration is a manifestation of our solidarity with our Chinese Filipino brethren who have been part of our lives in many respects as a country and as a people; 23 January 2012 may be declared as a special (non-working) day without detriment to public interest,” the proclamation stated
